Chrysler dropping the PT Cruiser?
Chrysler has confirmed that it’ll build the long-running PT Cruiser through until the end of 2009 but has made no promise that a next-gen model will be built or whether the current model will be produced beyond that date. Since its introduction back in 2000, the PT Cruiser has been a sales success for Chrysler but a recent slump in performance means that it may be time to put it out to pasture.

This vehicle has been a real low key star for Chrysler and to not invest into this name plate if a very poor decision. How many 20K cars come out with a wait list, sell for over sticker and continue to sell over 100k per year 8 years later?

I agree, the model is so lucrative that GM had to make an exact copy 5 years later! And though they're not perfect by any means, I've rented several and they were all very well suited to be people/stuff movers.

I always thought the PT Cruiser was a non-starter from the get go and I can't believe it sold as well as it did. I would have considered buying one for practical reasons if it would have been a more practical vehicle in terms of slightly larger size. The basic styling theme was OK but it did not contain any outstanding technology. Chrysler gave me absolutely no reason to buy one. Bottom line is that I am not willing to trade off practicality for "cute factor".

small cars = small prophit margins thats why they wont change it or invest the capital to restyle it.

Why wouldn't they? It only makes sense for them to. The car's time has passed, and it's only giving them more reason to dump unsold vehicles in airport parking lots.

I remember when it first came out and my next-door neighbor got one for their daughter going off to college. For almost 3 weeks people would walk right into their driveway to peek inside and stare at it.

Will_ , your neighbor would have been better off to buy their daughter a Jeep Wrangler which is a much more solid vehicle and has the added advantage of 4WD. I can believe that people were curious about it when it first arrived -- I was too -- but I quickly came to the conclusion that this was an overpriced piece of junk whose price could only be justified by its "cute factor". The only time I personally experienced public admiration for a car was when I parked my new 1972 Chrysler Imperial (the last of the true big Imperials) on the main street in a small town and people passing by on the sidewalk would actually touch it gently as if it would bring them luck. BTW, we did buy our daughter a Wrangler and the large original tires lasted 160,000 km at which time it was traded for a Saturn. My daughter still drives the Saturn.

EnnNorak....... a wrangler is not for evreyone being truck based and heavy, lets not forget the cruser is car based quiter, and handles better with more cargo and passenger space then the wrangler.

I don't think the cruiser is a bad vehicle and it has some nice retro touches. What Chrysler should do is follow VW's lead and restyle it.Perhaps make it a little more agressive,up the turbo power,do a woody version,or perhaps make it more of a Rod like the Prowler was.To simply abandon it like Ford did with the T-Bird is a cop out.

How is a Wrangler comparable to a PT Cruiser? The neighbor's daughter likes fun-looking cars. She now has a Mini. I don't see a Wrangler fitting into the PT Cruiser/Mini/Beetle/HHR category.

Bad move!!!! This only highlights Detroit's lack of creativity to keep long- running and well- established nameplates fresh. Detroit's answer to popular nameplates is to replace them with new ones that no one has ever heard of. The most logical move is to redesign the vehicle making it larger and moving it slighly upmarket.

I guess I agree, but I think they should also do a smaller, three-door version to compete with the Mini. It should have a simpler design that still looks good with age, unlike the current Cruiser. Obviously, the Mini is the best example of this, but the refreshed New Beetle still looks good.

Good. I always seem to pronounce it pity cruiser. Its ugly and slow. Totally useless.
