Chrysler may use Fiat’s Multiair technology

Chrysler cars will soon be built with Fiat’s Multiair technology, which Fiat claims is so advanced that competitors will take at least 2 years to catch up.

This technology gets more power out of smaller, less expensive engines.

That’s what makes it so advantageous from a cost perspective. Retrofitting the Multiair valve system to an existing engine is also surprisingly easy, making Chrysler all the more adamant to using it. Stated simply, the system is an electronically controlled valvetrain that enables more efficient and dynamic control of the air coming into the engine. This improves efficiency for a given displacement and load, and reduces emissions.

Chrysler + Fiat Technology = ?
Chyrsler needs a boost. Maybe this will help bring prices of the cars down and give better MPG. It could be great for Jeep products. I have a 2008 Jeep Commander, love the car, drives awesome, great ride, tuff and feels safe, but my god the thing is thirsty.
Can FIAT fix the MYGIG navigation,radio system please. It's ok but needs to be upgraded.

This is a decidedly different technology than FSI. It's similar in principle to BMW's VAriable NOckenwellen Steurung (VANOS), but it's a much more advanced application. In my engineering experience, I haven't seen anything quite like this as of yet in the automotive sector, and I applaud Fiat for their advancement.

I've heard of systems such as this, but I thought they required tremendous amounts of energy to control intake and exhaust valves electronically. There is quite a bit of force/velocity behind the movements and at 4000rpm each valve is gonna open and close 2000 times. But hey, if they got it to work for them, good for them.

Originally, electromagnetic valve-trains didn't recover any energy upon valve closure which meant that the valve-train ate up twice as much energy as a traditional mechanically actuated one. Fiat overcame this with the multi-air system. It is a substantial advance over any of the existing variable valve timing systems. It allows for extreme gains in low end torque, moderate gains in fuel economy, and modest gains in top end power over best of breed VVT technologies.

Glad to see Chrysler finally has a chip at the table.
