Chrysler’s powertrain lineup is beginning to look a little worse for wear against the modern engines powering vehicles from rivals like Toyota and GM. Where Chrysler lags behind the most is in fuel-economy, its fleet average mileage figure for 2007 was 18.3mpg (12.8L/100km), and this is what engineers have focused the most on improving.

To overcome this Chrysler is developing a new range of engines that feature fuel-saving technology such as direct-injection, cylinder deactivation, low friction internals and light weight components.
