Chrysler's April Sales Sink 18%
Chrysler LLC today reported total April 2008 sales of 147,751 units, which is 23 percent below the same period last year. Overall sales were most affected by slowing truck and SUV demand and a dramatic cut in daily rental-fleet sales. All sales figures are reported as unadjusted.

"The overall decrease in April sales, particularly of pickup trucks, demonstrates that the auto industry continues to be under pressure from the national economy," Vice Chairman and President Jim Press said. "Despite the economic challenges, and concern about rising fuel prices, we continue to hear from consumers that there is growing interest in vehicles that meet
specific needs, such as the Dodge Journey seven-passenger crossover for families and the Dodge and Jeep fuel-efficient compact vehicles for young professionals. Our plan is to continue to focus on meeting customers' needs, and managing our overall inventory to best weather this slowdown."

Chrysler's lineup of compact vehicles continued to connect well with consumers this month. Total compact vehicle sales of the fuel-efficient Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot, which each achieve 28 miles per gallon or better in highway driving, reached an April record 17,977 units last month, up 16 percent from April 2007.

As the spring "top-down" driving season begins, the Chrysler Sebring Convertible finished the month with 2,827 units compared with April 2007 sales of 1,447 units, a 95 percent sales increase. Also enjoying a positive month was the Dodge Charger with sales of 13,021 units in April, a 29 percent increase over 2007 April sales.

In April, the company launched its largest digital-advertising campaign in Chrysler history for the all-new Dodge Journey, 'If you can dream it, do it.' The Journey, with best-in-class fuel economy (25-mpg hwy, 4-cylinder), delivers a unique combination of versatility and flexibility at less than $20,000. The Journey increased sales to 6,667 units in only its third month
on the market.

As a result of the success of its "New Day" packages, Chrysler will continue to offer the popular packages in May. The packages have struck a chord with buyers by combining the company's most sought-after features on a wide range of vehicles at reduced prices.

The Company finished the month with 422,353 units of inventory, or a
74-day supply. As part of a planned reduction in manufacturing and
capacity, inventory is down 13 percent compared with April 2007 when it
totaled 482,786 units.

Everywhere.....Down here in Houston every car dealer seems to be doing great, always bragging about that sales are great great great. I wish they can break it down by region, because here in Texas people are buying Acura's, Honda's, Toyota's, Too-Many Bmw's, Too Many Mercedes, They will forever buy Lexus down here, Lexus=Texas.

I even went to the Jaguar-Land Rover-Ashton Martin Dealership, and I was suprise of the amount of people that was in their buying cars, like gas wasn't an issue, their buying Land Rover left and right.

Anyways, i'm just curious to know what markets are not doing good, because it sure ain't Houston...

No matter what you may see, don't be surprised if Houston, as an overall market, is down in car sales (not to mention home sales).

It's basically EVERYWHERE. There's no single region that's particularly hurt. That's how this stuff works.

Went to the Acura dealership last week to look at the TSX in person and told the salesman, "hey man I know right now u guys are hurting in sales," and he said no were not, we doing great...

I have a family member that sells houses here in houston and read the newspaper here and home sales here in houston are up, not by much but it's up....

The Houston real estate market is on pace for its second-best year on record.

Let me not forget also in Houston.....remember how Toyota's talking about their scion's and Tundra sales are low.....well the Fred Hass Toyota Dealership here in Houston is ranked as the #1 Toyota Truck Sales in the Nation, and #1 Tundra sales in the World...

I ask serveal salesman how is sales and they all stated Great Great Great! They can't even keep Scion's on the lot, as I was at the car dealership I saw a nice loaded Scion sittin on 19' wheels on the showroom floor, 15 minutes later I walk outide a saw a Scion drive up to the door, and I was like wow, thats nice, went back inside to didn't see the Scion on the showroom floor since that was the only one their came back outside and look at and the customers that was looking at it ask me "Is it Yours" and I stated know, and they replied they just came to buy the car today, but someone came into the dealership and bought the only Scion the Toyota place had in 15 Minutes! FROM THE SHOWROOM FLOOR!

Funny! Now that u said that because now that I think about it the Airpot here is call George Bush Intercontinental Aitport which is the fastest growing airport in the nation, one of the highest ranked on-time performance, and Continental Airline largest hub.

We're not going to even get on the George Bush (only 10 library in the U.S thats name after the president) Library at Texas A&M University that Senior George Bush vsits on a regular basis, which also former University President Robert Gates who is now Secretary of Defense. Even though that Texas A&M is funded by NASA here and the U.S. Armed Forces.

U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration, Texas A&M's nuclear research reactor became the first to convert uranium reactor fuel from a highly enriched form to a low-enriched safer form.

Texas A&M is a leading university in animal cloning. Spearheaded by the College of Veterinary Medicine, Texas A&M was the first university in the world to clone a domestic animal, a cat named 'cc', on December 22, 2001

Research funding for Texas A&M during the 2004 year alone totaled more than $520.9 million, we see where all the money is going...ANYTHING DEALING WITH THE BUSHES!

Oh not let me forget River Oaks here in houston which is known as the most prestigious neighborhood in Houston which Senior George Bush resides, city buses are not even allowed to go into the nighborhood. Even Robert Mosbacher (The mosbacher family is one of houston wealthiest) lives their who is formely Secretary of Commerce and his son Robert Mosbacher jr. is also a political appointee in the George W. Bush Administration.

oh not let me forget Rod Paige who is formely H.I.S.D Superintendent who was formely United States Secretary of Education thanks to Bush, but was fired cause he call the Bush National Education Association for obstructing the "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" organzation a Terrorist Organazation cause he knew things that we didn't.....

Now since Bush has endorse Mcain I wonder whats next?

Point is, Get on Bush side and be rich and happy all your life or Be DOOM!!

i had already thot the same thing before getting to the later posts here; TEXAS'S economy IS BOOMING 'cuz of the Big Oilys, and all the defense industries and contractors there!

look at how the Big Oilys are making RECORD PROFITS while people across the country are whining about gas prices! same thing here in alaska. the state recently GAVE $200,000,000 to my company to use and disburse helping people get their homes more energy efficient. (meanwhile, we are all also being hit by high gas and fuel oil prices!)

the cost of Cheney's and Dubya's INVENTED WAR is pushing $1 TRILLION, on its way to THREE trillion. while this is a COST that our GRANDKIDS will still be paying for with their taxes, there also happens to be people AT THE OTHER SIDE of this money funnel: all the companies catering to the Dept. of "Defense."

war is GOOD for business! IF you are in the RIGHT business. (if not, too bad. just tighten your belts more.)

and never forget, this is A WAR FOR OIL. all this "democracy for iraqis" BS is just the "front story." you can choose to BELIEVE it if you are yet another politically naive american. NOBODY on the REST OF THE PLANET believes this fairy tale.

KEEP THIS IN MIND FOLKS, come election day in november! (as if you couldn't, whenever you pay for gas and groceries.)

I also cannot forget to mention that Texas ranks #1 to have more Fortune 500 companies than anyone in the U.S. and Houston ranks #2 in fortune 500 companies in the U.S. right after New York CIty....

I see why the Texans down here love the Bushes....

Houston is known as a world capital of the oil and gas industry with over 5000 energy firms doing business in the region.

Houston dominates U.S. oil and gas exploration and production.

Makes me wonder why gas is still high here....

One car I would avoid is the Chrysler 300.
This car is not very roomy, and is underpowered. I once had to floor the accelerator to get away from a jack-knifing rig on my rear bumper, and the car just would not go. I came within seconds of the end.
The transmission bucks wildly and it just doesn’t shift properly. The 3.7Litre engine backfires. So much for the idea of building cars with smaller engines. This car feels like it is dragging anchor.

Less horsepower becomes a dangerous idea on high-speed highways.

Te dashboard is cheap plastic and cardboard. I wanted to mount a switch and a heavy duty PowerPoint for my laptop under the dash. There is nothing but cardboard to drill into. No place to put a screw. What am I supposed to use? Scotch tape? Come Chrysler executives, get off the golf course.

The car is hard to see out of, due to the chopped roof. It is hard to tell where the rear bumper ends when backing up. You can’t see the signal light above the windshield, unless you stop a few yards back from the light.
The battery is buried under the front fender well, down where the road salt splashes all over it. You have to pull the fender to replace the battery. Come on guys, let’s get serious.

This guy doesn't know what he is talking about. He cut and pasted the exact same comments on another column. He hates the 300 and loves his ancient land yacht Marquis. I doubt he has even driven a Chrysler 300. 300 owners, isn't the battery mounted in the trunk? Maybe just the V8 models. Even if he drove one, it must have been the 2.7 model which for the most part would still probably outrun many of the older Marquis.

New York state sales are suffering. The sales tax on a new car up here is nearly 10%. There are no huge hi-tech companies, so most people buy more affordable Ford and GMs. Most people have to Finance those huge sales tax amounts.
I think people are expecting imports to get expensive with the plummeting American Dollar.
I like the new VW Passat, but I don’t think they will sell in this economic climate up here.
I do see a lot of Ford Edges these days on the highways up here.

I Hope Hillary won’t bring the New York State Taxation burden to the rest of the country.

I drove the 300 for 2 years. I ordered it in Cool Vanilla. I agree that the Hemi is likely better, as long as it is the one without Cylinder deactivation, but I hear that if you buy it w/o cylinder deactivation, you are required to pay $850.00 gas guzzler tax.
The car is simply underpowered with the 3.7. I drive interstates, and the car has trouble going uphill in the hills of Pennsylvania.
The traction control gives the car a very artificial feel. Maybe ordering the car w/o this feature would help. Also, the 300 is yet another car that doesn’t give you a full-size spare.
I made 2 trips 800 mile to Boston. The first trip was with the Chrysler 300, I was worn out half way through the trip. The second trip was with the Grand Marquis. What a difference. The Mercury was a dream to drive. I was comfortable the whole distance, and the car performed beautifully.
One night while driving the interstate, I got tired; I pulled off and tried to sleep in the back seat. I slept for about 20 minutes and woke up with a stiff back. I decided that it wasn’t worth it and decided to drive on.
The only thing I can say is this:
Drive both cars on a 800 mile trip, at the end of the day, you tell me which is the better quality car.
Also, if someone kind find a spot under the dash that you can thread a screw into, please let me know, as I was determined to weld my own piece of angle iron under the dash, and finish the job that Chrysler neglected to finish.

Maybe the Chryslers Imperial would have been a better idea for Chrysler as opposed to the 300. As a kid, I remember my father’s 1979 Chrysler Lebaron Sedan, and his 1980 wagon. These were decent quality cars. The 300 is no Chrysler Lebaron, that is for sure.

The Dodge Mirada/Chrysler Cordoba was nice car too. these were better cars than the junk thier making today.

Mercuryguy is confused. You can't order the Hemi without cylinder deactivation! Enjoy your Marquis, it's on the endangered species list.

My mistake. It is the base 2.7L. I've owned so many cars over the years that the numbers gets blurred after a while.
Yes, I did realize that it was the larger Hemi in the 6 Liter range that comes without cylinder deactivation.

I just don’t like this idea, because Cadillac tried this idea on the early 80s Cadillac’s, and it failed miserably. They had a digital pad on the dash. I still remember the tv commercials, take your pick, choose 4, 6 or 8 cylinders at the push of a button. I heard these things constantly needed electrical repair, and it got worse as the vehicle aged. I would bet that they are better now, but less moving parts and less wires means less trouble in the long run. The extra $800 in gas guzzler tax is likely a bargain compared to what it might cost to fix this technology over the life of the car.
