Chrysler still plan on moving ahead with Phoenix V6 engine

Can someone please tell me why it's going to cost $3Billion (that's with a Bee) to develop this engine? Someone's making some dough - and it ain't the shareholders.

How about developing a more fuel efficient 4-cylinder?
instead. If you need power, you'd get just as much power from an SRT4 than you'd ever get in a massaged V6.

Why did they have to "develop" these engines? They could easily buy and existing design from other manufacturers like what other carmakers do. Its not as if Chrysler is developing an engine to compete in F1 or Lemans or a GTR type vehicle that they have to keep the performance figures a secret. Or maybe they plan to develop the engines to be sold to other carmakers in the future?

IMO, a big chunk of the 3 Billion includes executive salaries, bonuses, etc.

Chrysler hasn't used Mitsubishi V6's for a while. 3.5 SOHC is from Chrysler 3.2 was the same engine with smaller displacement and is now discontinued. 2.7 DOHC is Chrysler. Previous sludge problem has been corrected. 3.3, 3.8, 4.0 V6 engines are all Chrysler pushrod motors you find in the minivans. 4.0 might be a bored out 3.5 actually. I think one of those are in the Wrangler now too. They are reliable and good for 200,000 miles plus. Not big on horsepower but plenty of torque. Mitsubishi sourced V6's were the 2.5 and the 3.0 which are no longer used by Chrysler.

Also, I forgot the 3.9 Magnum V6. It was based on the old 5.2 (318 ci) and 5.9 (360 ci) v8's. They were found exclusivly in Ram Trucks and vans as well as the Dakota and Durango. I'm not sure if they are still using the 3.9 anymore, but again, these were bulletproof engines. Hopefully the Phoenix engine can replace these V6's and all the variations above, which will eliminate so many different designs and save them money in the long run.

That's great. But they're no longer coming out with the one thing that might have given them some clout - the Getrag/Chrysler dual-clutch transmission. [Which was supposed to go along with those new V6 engines]
I love Chrysler. Been a 'fan' all my life. I just hope it survives somehow.
