Confirmed: Chrysler Will File For Bankruptcy

what a shame hopefully the FIAT/Chrysler merger will still fall through so they can get back on their feet but this is a sad day for America.

This really has nothing to do with Bush. It's an accumulation of poor business decision as far as subsidizing finance rates and sub-par build quality affect resale value. They should have never entered leasing if they were going to be exposed to such great risk on the finance.

I wonder if this will affect Mercedes at all.

Nothing to do with Bush. Chrysler has been spiraling down in flames for decades. DaimlerChrysler AG(1998-2007) was no help if anything worsened the situation.

Chrysler has been downhill for a while now. They were cutting corners on their products any and every way they could. I mean seriously, they're still using 4-speed automatics in their latest midsize cars. And the interiors(all but the new Ram) are horrible. They seemed as though they were about to turn things around but I guess it won't matter anymore.

Daimler Benz hurt Chrysler greatly.Zeter Deautch(sorry for my spelling) pushed ahead with the Chrysler Sebring,Dodge Caliber,Jeep Compass etc.These were cheesy looking cars with poor quality interiors. Buyers stayed away in droves. In 98 Chrysler was in very good shape. You really have to blame Mercedes for this scenario. However Fiat,who has made one of the best turn arounds in the auto industry is now going to own 20% of Chrysler. There is a very good chance that Sergio Marchionne will be the new CEO of Chrysler. If that happens Chrysler will emerge a much stronger company and put on the right track. So this 60 to 90 day bankruptsy filing for Chapter 11 will clear the way for good things to come. I for one am very heartened by this situation.

Wow, Bush has not been president for 4+ months and we are still blaming him?

If you wanted to go back into the first set of bailouts that happened, those were put through during Bush because Congress pushed them through. Bush did not sign any specific executive orders to have money given to these companies. The Democratic Congress supported and passed the bills to dispense the money, and did so with a significant lack of rules or policies on how it could be spent and where. So to blame this on Bush is pretty inaccurate.

As for Chrysler, they have had issues for years now. Between UAW, sub-par products (which are not all shoddy, just not liked by critics). When Chrysler introduced the new Sebring it was not very well taken, too small to compete with Accord, Camry, Fusion, etc. and it looked like an elongated Crossfire. Dodge also tries to remove the Neon and introduce the Caliber, thinking everyone who wants a small car wants a 5 door hatch. That was a big miss, the Neon should have never left and been updated/redesigned. The SRT version of the Caliber took WAY too long to come out to compete against other rivals as well.

Dodge's interiors are also still lacking quality. They are overly plastic and cheap looking compared to similar brands who offer more materials and better aesthetics. The caravan redesign was not well accepted and did not put them out in front of the pack against Odyssey and Sienna, it was a disappointing competitor, and they still don't offer an AWD version. The Challenger (not that it's a high volume car) came out kinda late in comparison to when it was introduced, but at least it came out sooner than the Camaro. And weren't these cars (Challenger, Camaro, Mustang) all in similar price ranges when introduced back in the day. The Challenger was now put out as a somewhat exotic in Dodge's stable with low volume and higher price tags than competitors (partially due to production costs). That was a sore spot that was missed when this car was made as well.

I could go on and on about their slips and falls over the years, it seems that Jeep is the only one I still love, just hope they don't disintigrate it. But the company has been making bad decisions for awhile, and when they were owned by Daimler, they were getting nothing but the scraps and leftovers from MB. Then Cerberus came in bought them and turned around treating them like the red-headed step-child. Nothing new has come from them internally (new models, engines, etc) since they departed with Daimler because they were in a stall. All things out now were in the works years back and hence have not been keeping up with competition. Example being the most recent Dodge Journey (Chrysler Pacifica) with horrible gas mileage for a crossover. Speaking of Pacifica, isn't it time for a redesign? Especially when crossovers are BIG now.

I dunno I could be wrong on a lot of points but its my opinion and $0.02.

Mr Bush is the personal author of the "bailouts" to GM and Chrysler, when he could not get the Republican members of congress to save American jobs from their delusional "gotterdamrung" version of capitalsism.

I am not at all a Bush supporter, but I agreed with his decision. There is lots of blame to go around for how we got here, from the UAW's rules, to obstinate bondholders, to idiotic people and their leaders who don't understand we can't import oil and not send money to people who don't like us.
