Consumer Reports: Best & Worst Used Cars
Reliable models to look for—and troublesome ones to avoid.
Is it time to replace your car? Owners of 27 percent of the vehicles in our latest Annual Car Reliability Survey acquired them used last year, and they're definitely on to something. Data from our exclusive survey, conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, show that hundreds of used-car models provide good reliability. And they can be safe, fuel efficient, and affordable.
Used vehicles are often some of the best values you'll find because you sidestep the biggest expense associated with buying a new car: depreciation.
For example, a seven-year-old Lexus RX SUV, a safe and reliable vehicle that typically costs $40,000 when new, can be found for $12,000 to $14,000. And young drivers don't have to settle for a new small car like the Toyota Yaris when they can find a fairly new, roomier, and better equipped used vehicle in the same price range, such as a Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, or Toyota Camry.
To minimize the risks, look for vehicles that have proved to be reliable. The following lists of models from 1998 through 2007 will steer you to the gems (and away from the duds) among the thousands of used vehicles on the market.
The Best of the best and Worst of the worst are based on our larger lists of Reliable used cars and Used cars to avoid (both available to subscribers).
These comprehensive lists give you a rundown of all the models that were found, from our data, to be above or below average in reliability. Owners reported on any serious problems they had had with their cars, minivans, SUVs, and pickup trucks in the previous year.

cadillac IS NOT on the best list, altho' buick makes it.
as does the PONTIAC vibe, a re-badged TOYOTA.
caddy can slather leather and gizmos on gussied up chevys and resuscitated oldmobiles, but underneath it is STILL just another mediocre car.
at least BUICKS ARE put together better. enuff so that it is NOT insulting to either to call the Avalon "Toyota's Buick." ;)
one of the richest guys i know, always chooses buicks over cadillacs.

car guy when was the last time you owned a american car? I have owned many since i drive so much for my business never never did i ever have one problem and i do not take care of my car infact when i traded my esclade in i had 65000 miles and i only changed the oil 3 times what a great car when my ex-wife got rid of her 325I bmw that was in the shop every other month for problems after problems the 325 when traded only had about 35,000 then she wanted the 525 bmw the 1st 2500 mile she had it the computer running the suspension failed it had to be towed and the part took 3 weeks to come in so she did not have her new car for 3 weeks waiting for the part which the service advisor told me that the reason they could not get part it was on back order reason is it is because they do not recall cars like the americans do they do not want a recall so what they do is make you the consumer waite instead of knowing the problem is there and could fix it by recalling it. what a great car and they really stand behind there product they will fix it however they do not think of the client they will make you waite. so i know americans make the # 1 car and the rest are 6-7

Hey, buddy, it's called "punctuation". Look. It. Up. And. Use. It.
And you only changed the oil three times in 65k miles with your Cadillac? While you're looking up "punctuation" look up "maintenance" and "mistreatment" as well. If you never had problems with that car you got lucky, when you treated the next cars piss poorly you didn't. You can't treat your cars like shit every time and expect to never have problems, you should be thankful you got lucky on the one.

actually, he may well HAVE HAD problems since he traded his escalade AFTER A MERE 65,000 miles.
most japanese cars are barely even broken in at that point! "crappy japanese cars" are only those that DO NOT make it to 200,000 without major problems.
(and these are invariably the ones NOT MAINTAINED. overall reliability is such that, some people actually DO NOT maintain them at all.
(caller on the Car Talk radio program: "What's this oil change business all about anyway?" he had a honda accord, with 135k miles. fortunately for him, the 1st owner DID do oil changes. allowing for the engine to live with his 90,000-miles-old oil.)

EVERY SINGLE suscriber to CR, print or on-line, can participate in the survey.
it is recognized by the business press as the Gold Standard in ratings of automobiles and most other consumer products.
unlike some of its competitors, it does not accept advertising, and is not influenced by possible loss of ad revenues when it does not hold its punches.

Dumb comment. Ford was noticeably absent on the "worst" list (except for the Aviator). Yet Mazda, Lincoln, and Volvo (all Ford products) are on the "best" list. Maybe that's why Xero posted it? The truth is some people can accept news and criticism of their favorite brands, and some can not.

Japanese cars dominated the best list as usual. American cars ruin its own reputation again. Though CR is not a completely reliable source, it can't be denied that European cars have either average or below average reliability.

the shibbs : read my statement before you answer, otherwise you look ridiculous. I said Certified Pre-owned cars. There is a difference. Certified by either a Lexus or BMW dealer. The program is set by the manufacturer. There are certain requirements that the Certified program by the manufacturer has set up. Once a car qualifies, then Lexus or BMW will extend the warranty for an additional 2 or 3 years & up to 50k to 75k additional in miles. They will also offer a type of financing incentive. THIS IS ONLY GOOD ON CAR TRADED IN AT A LEXUS, BMW dealership........
Why, if lexus makes such a better pre-owned car, do the sell on average 3,000 less Certitified Pre-Owned vehicles?
On a side note. If you sell more New cars than another make, means that you will also or at least should have as many or more pre-owned cars on the market. They go hand in hand....

How about this article about LEXUS
I am quite surprised to see Lexus suffering so badly, after all if you look at the monthly percentages it doesn’t seem to add up. However the way Lexus reports figures with the DSR method, can lead to deceiving percentages that only are uncovered by raw data comparison. The most disturbing trend is the methodical loss of more and more sales each month. Could it be Lexus buyers are hanging on by their bootstraps weathering the storm? Or are there underlying issues with the brand?

your stats on relative DEALER sales of used lexi and bmws mean nothing.
lexus and toyota have such a reputation for reliability, EVEN AMONG USED CARS, that many buyers can be confident buying from private owners.
the same CANNOT BE SAID for bmw. that alone can explain the relative DEALER transactions on used cars.
further, i once scanned the classifieds for used lexi on sale. there were ONLY a FEW listings. bmw had half a column, mb about a column and a half. this, despite lexus selling far more new cars here in the u.s.
it may well be that lexus owners just KEEP THEIR CARS LONGER, being happy with long trouble free service. when they do sell, either 1) it has too many miles to be a certified used car, and/or 2) a friend or relative snaps it up and it never sees a dealer's lot.

AND, this is an ANNUAL survey.
CR has been testing cars for more than 1/2 century, longer than just about ALL other magazines. (maybe Popular Mechanix has a FEW years on 'em.)
while i don't know exactly how long they've been doing their surveys, over the years i'd guess TENS OF MILLIONS of owners have responded.
for as long as i've seen these CR summaries, toyota has ALWAYS ranked near, if not AT the TOP, in reliability.

then again, subaru doesnt have that big of a line up. however, that makes it even easier for them to be on that list, since they are able to focus more attention to each car, and not have to manage a huge line up, like toyota, honda, bmw, etc.

subaru doesn't need a line-up like toyota and honda. they got boxer engines and amazing AWD and no other brand is like this, and its another reason why I follow them. they're unique cars in many markets. their designs are subjective, but their cars suit me the most. and their boxer diesel has won many (and lost some I'll admit) reviews.

one of the most graphic displays of reliability, is the CR chart that tracks problems per 100 vehicles by age.
most mfgrs' get to the 100 problems/100 cars at 5 to 7 years. hondas take more than 10 years to get there. toyotas, ~17 years!
it is no wonder acura, honda, lexus and toyota are so dominant on the best of the best list.

new car sales only tell PART of the story; and everyone is down anyway, what with the recession.
used car sales tell another story. see my 4/5 posts under GoObama's 4/3 post.
classified listings are a good reflection on which cars people seem to want to UNLOAD, and which are KEEPERS. (i haven't looked at cadillac yet.)

tundras other than the v8 4wd may have had a FEW problems. but still FAR LESS PROBLEMS than ALL competing trucks, which tend to have more problems than cars. (along with vans; across the board with ALL brands, with toyota and honda vans being MOST trouble free.)
4wd and AWD vehicles ALSO tend to have more drivetrain issues than fwd and rwd vehicles. again, across ALL brands; with toyotas having the LEAST 4wd drivetrain issues.
this has been true since the 1st tundra trucks, 1st tacoma trucks, the 1st Hilux toyota trucks, and the great granddaddy of 'em all, the TOYOTA LANDCRUISER.
i'd venture a guess that the only reason the tundra v8 4wd has fallen off the pedestal, is because it is THE MOST POWERFUL v8 engine ever for light trucks, and even toyota's ultra reliable 4wd system can't handle all the power. YET. (it goes without saying toyota WILL correct this.)
look at CR Frequency of Repair charts. the v8 tundra aside, ALL toyota 4wd vehicles are FAR ABOVE average or at least ABOVE AVERAGE. models upwards of 8 years old remain more reliable than most competitors' as new as just 3 or 4 years old.
NO ONE makes more models of MORE RELIABLE 4wd/awd vehicles than toyota.
(LEAST of all jeep and Land Rover.)

I'll still get a f150 or silverado regardless of what CR says.

if you're not hard on your vehicles, maybe it won't make a BIG difference.
in the HARSH ENVIRONMENT of alaska, i see more and more tundras all the time, and ever fewer new domestic trucks.
in the compact class, just about NO ONE that's knowledgable buys anything other than tacomas. (even nissans are a distant 2nd. most older s10/15s are lawn ornaments, if not already junked. a FEW older rangers still crawl around.)
alaskans are TOUGH on their vehicles; the climate even more so. so toyota trucks RULE out here.

look at the lists above again. aside from SUVs and vans, which are considered "trucks" by some, there are NO TRUCKS in the first list, other than TOYOTA trucks.
and the second list of "the worst of the worst," IS FULL OF domestic and euro TRUCKS (including suvs, and vans) as well as cars.
'nuff said.

Surprising but great to see the M3 on there.
