Consumer Reports Proclaims Honda As the Best Cars Sold In The Land
Overall, the best cars sold in the US are still made by Honda, according to the Automaker Report Cards published in Consumer Reports' Annual Auto Issue on sale March 4. Honda also led the pack last year, the first time the country's largest expert, independent, non-profit consumer product testing organization issued such information.
With an overall score of 78 out of 100 points, Honda was followed closely by Toyota (75) and Subaru (72). BMW, Mazda, Nissan, and Volkswagen tied at 71, after rounding. Only Honda and Subaru have earned the distinction of having all of the models tested make Consumer Reports' Recommended list. Honda is also the only automaker whose entire model lineup is currently recommended. Full details and rankings are available in the article "Who makes the best cars?" in the magazine and for online subscribers at http://www.ConsumerReports.org.
Honda earned the top score because it builds cars that are well-rounded, have excellent reliability and perform very well. But not all of Honda's models lead their class. The new CR-V SUV can't quite match the top-ranked Toyota RAV4. The Accord was edged out by the Nissan Altima, and the Honda Odyssey minivan scored slightly lower than the Toyota Sienna.
The overall score for each automaker is based on the average overall scores of its vehicles in Consumer Reports' road tests and its average predicted-reliability score from Consumer Reports' Annual Car Reliability Survey. Manufacturers received a report card only if five or more of its vehicles were tested.
Detroit automakers garnered some of the lowest scores, but there have been significant signs of improvement in Ford and GM vehicles this past year. Of all the Ford vehicles tested, the percentage Consumer Reports recommended jumped to 64 percent from 54 percent last year, due to improved reliability. Ninety-three percent of Ford models had average or better reliability in Consumer Reports' latest survey, up from 63 percent last year. As reported late last year, Toyota's reliability has slipped, but is still one of the most reliable auto manufacturers overall. Three popular Toyota models - the redesigned Camry V6 sedan, four-wheel-drive V8 Tundra pickup, and the Lexus GS with all-wheel drive - all had below-average reliability.
General Motors' average test score improved four points to 61, but the number of tested vehicles recommended dropped six percent. Some newer GM models like the Buick Enclave/Saturn Outlook/GMC Acadia SUVs, the Cadillac CTS, and the Chevrolet Silverado have done well in testing, but many older designs are subpar.
Chrysler's percentage dropped from 21 percent to 14, due to a number of unimpressive new vehicles. Noisy, underpowered engines, poor interior craftsmanship, cramped seating, and limited visibility plagued the most recent Chrysler vehicles tested. Only a quarter of Consumer Reports' recommended vehicles are from U.S. companies, a result of inconsistent reliability and performance. About half are Japanese.
"Some manufacturers are very consistent in producing good performing reliable vehicles," said David Champion, senior director of automotive testing, Consumer Reports. "But even in the lower ranks of the report cards, some manufacturers have some gems." In the end, the companies that make the best vehicles are those that excel in performance, interior craftsmanship, safety, comfort, and reliability. The best continue to set a higher and higher standard, a competition in which consumers are the ultimate winners.

you're a moron. Hondas (generally speaking) have always handled better than Toyotas. Nothing could be more boring than a Camry or a Lexus.

The MB are not on the list because they are not as the article states for Honda "well rounded, have excelent reliabilty and preform very well." This sounds the the definition for an appliance. Exactly what I don't want, but perfect for the general auto consumer.
MB leads innovation, which can sometimes hurt reliabilty. In any case in my last three MB's over 10 years of ownership I had a battery go dead. Thats enough reliability for me. I think its excellent consdiering the complex systems employed (I.e. 12cyl twin turbo, active suspension etc). As far as performance Honda hasn't built anything with 600lbs of torque yet so that leaves me with MB. Lastly beeing well rounded isn't an adjective I ever used in shoping for a car. I am an enthusaist and have been fortunate enough in my life to be able to afford what I think is the best vehicle, MB. I do like Honda products over Toyota any day. Honda has some personality. Toyota is improving a little in personality as of late but historically have built the most boring cars in general.

At the very bottom is where MB is on the list. Check out the problems with reliability and overall customer satisfaction at consumerreports.com ... I've owned a couple of them over the years and always traded back to BMW because of the problems with MB.. Customer satisfaction is not one of their strong points and reliability is really bad.

If you dont care about driving an ugly car, Honda is a great choice. Apart from the controversial styling the rest is an excellent value.

Really? Because overpriced cars tend to have worse resale value, and resale on the Civic is fantastic. In fact outside of collector cars the only car I know of with resale value even remotely similar to the Civic is the Mini Cooper.

Honda's styling department has really dropped the ball the last few years. The last gen accord was fugly, and the new one has no direction from smooth lines, to stout front grille, it's like Civic meets Chrysler Sebering, meets Honda Ridgeline.
The new Civic is not bad, but the Ridgline needs a freshen up badly, and an optional V8. The Element is due for a redesign, the Fit needs to have a sportier Sport version (i.e. turbo), and the Pilot is just old and boxy looking.

Almost everyone here has accused Honda of being "ugly" or "boring", but one thing is for sure: They are EXCELLENT cars! I do not agree with the "boring" part. As far as FWD cars go, they handle very well. I guess the "ugly" part depends on the eye of the beholder. I'm not personally thrilled with the new Accord's design, and the Ridgeline and Element are just not my style, but that doesn't affect the cars' quality. They are very well built vehicles, and that's what CR is talking about.

That was a really dumb comment. some people actually like the 3 series. I for one love the one series, doesn't mean I cant afford anything else its my personal taste. I don't love BMW's for the price its the performance and driver oriented feel that I like that so-far I havent found in anything ewlse. Love audi's interior but love tha balance of the rwd BMW. although the AWD on the audi is great for inclement weather. Maybe you are the one who can't afford one.

this is exactly what im talking about people like this shouldnt even be allowed on this site. you make so much money (yeah right) and you sound like some common fool, talking like that over cars. i bet 9 out of 10 your just some teenage kid with a filthy mouth, and a computer when mom isnt around. As far as this post not sure why anyone would trash HOnda or Acura they arent bad cars, just not alot of other things. the guy didnt even say anything negative about a brand. For the record the 3 series is by far vaunted as best in class, it also consistently wins comparison test, and despite your Common expletive is the Best seller in its class hands down and thats with it being some hmmm 5-10,0000 or more than the cars it competes with. So obviously the 3 series is well worth it. Acura has the TL as a hit, and the MDX name anything else good from Acura. If Acura wanted it could be among the best hell they started the Japanese Luxury Car as a seperate brand. They just arent doing it right now in terms of what makes its competitors so good. Its not just rear wheel drive because Audi has proved performance and handling can be had with Awd, so when they want to turn around they will.

TL vs 3 series really isnt something to sneer at especially price wise with the Tl topping out at what 36, and 39 respectively. the 3 series tops at 328i what 45 and 335i 55, thats what makes the TL such a good car for some in my eyes because it has the technology, power, styling, and size but it is very reasonable price wise its the logical choice for alot of people. Its FWD but its not like the ES, and it offers the styling of its smaller counterparts but is about as big as a 5 series, or e class.

well car guy we can climb into the ring and I can take something you could never get back with any amount of money, and thats your man hood after I pund you lol. you money makes you nothing, and you wouldn't be accepted without it. Yeah I only make about $72 a year but you could never touch me. You will never be liked for who you are, only for what you have. you must be a really lonely person. But if I did beat you in a cage match you'd go crying about how much of a bully and how much of an un-civilized group of people middle class citizens are and you'd go crawl back to your mansion and have your maid clean your wounds while you hid from the real world and continue to exist in your own world where money protects you from the harsh realities of the world. I have nothing agains the wealthe, I body guard a few performers along with a good friend who is a producer, and trust me he has more money than you have probably ever seen rich boy but he isn't stuck up or thinks he is above anyone. I challenge you to a cage fight. all you have to do is e-mail me and I can set things up with my instructor and trainer. Of course you won't take the challenge. you'll just say something like " thats all you low class people can do is use violence to solve things" well this is a sporting event challenge. How about that rich boy.

And I also respect japanese cars. I am an auto enthusiast not a fan boy who thinks every make of car sucks but mine. I think the is is a very nice car and looks very nice as well. I also drive a land rover and the woman drives a 325i with the sports package. I owned a toyota back when I was in the military and I put over 176,000 miles on it and sold it to a friend and he drove the hell out of it and had no problems. so I am not biased or blind, I do have my favorite which is BMW even if they aren't the most reliable brand out there. None of mine have ever given me any trouble. every car has its niche and its place in the automotive world. different customers have different tastes and needs. not everyone wants a sporty ride and aggressive handling. some want the floaty ride of a cadillac or lincoln town car.

So what happened CR?
-- American Honda Motor Co. Inc. is recalling hundreds of thousands of Acuras to make two safety-related repairs.
The number of recall notices exceeds 400,000, but there is overlap in the affected vehicles. Some owners are eligible for both fixes, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Dealers are to install heat-resistant power steering hoses in about 273,000 Acura TLs built for the 2004-08 model years. The company determined that original hoses deteriorate prematurely and may leak, creating a fire hazard. A similar recall of 43,000 Acura RLs built for the 2005-08 model years was announced in November.
Kinda of blows there findings.

Yeah, Honda/Acura is the only car manufacturer to EVER have a recall. The bias on this site is unbelievable. You guys can’t face the fact that HONDA/ACURA make great cars. They may not appeal to you race/drift boys, but the majority of the of the American public love them. Guess what…THEY SELL. Acura sedan sells have been down due to older models (excluding the RL), but they still rank among the best.

3) Civic Mugen Si - very fast and stylish! infact Civic Type R is on the list of world car award list for 2008. uh huh.
4) Honda's Acura division - awesome technology and styling called MDX.
5) Honda's ATVs
6) Honda's Engines

First things first I said "CAR". So you can scratch 8 items off of your list. I know that Honda makes great motorcycles among other things. It’s their cars that we are talking about here. Can we keep it in context?
And before that I said "exciting”.
With that said let’s look at the rest of your list.
The Honda FCX - 0-60 in 12-5 seconds. Enough said
The Honda Accord - Is that what you call exciting? LOL!
The Mugen Civic SI - I guess you call it exciting. But a $30,000 Civic? At that Price there are plenty of cars that can outperform it.

Yawn. You guys are going all over the damn place. There’s a difference between fun and high-performance. If a person is looking for a fun car, then the Civic Si can fill the bill. If a person is looking for a high-performance car, then the Civic isn’t going to cut it. Why the hell is that so hard for you morons to understand? It’s isn’t about just 0-60. It’s about also about Torque (among other things) which is something the Civic Si (and most Hondas for that matter) doesn’t have enough of.
Nicehomer,
All you are is a Honda Fanboy. You love everything that's Honda you will go to your death-bed defending them. All we were talking about were just cars and you bring up Watercraft, ATV's and Motorcycles. Talk about off topic? LOL!
Not let’s get back to the Civic. Maybe this is impossible for you to comprehend, but it is possible for person to consider the Civic to not offer enough performance for purchase. 139lb ft of torque ain’t gonna cut it for a person looking for decent low-rpm performance. But since it’s a Honda the car can never be at fault right? Hondas are perfect vehicles right? Get a clue you Honda-Loving Blind-Fanboy. It must be hard for you these days, considering the boring automotive appliances that Honda is releasing these days. LOL!

Ultimately you are trying to keep on focusing on the civic but, think out of the box for once you moran. Think about high performance Honda Formula 1 cars to Honda Jets to other craps I mentioned by the Honda. Tell me a single other car company that builds so many exciting products! Why do you keep bringing up things that don't have anything to do with cars? Why is it so hard for you to just stick to the subject of cars?
Now sticking with the subject of cars:
The NSX ? The greatest car that nobody purchased. NSX Sales were a disaster. As nice as the NSX was, it was more like the McGyver of the automotive world, meaning that the NSX could do everything but didn’t have any chest hair. Porches, Ferraris, and Vettes have chest hair, The NSX didn’t.
The S2000? No torque.
The RS-X? Harmless, FWD, underpowered teenager/MILF car. Hardly the recipe for excitement IMO.
Honda's F1 Effort? They’ve won one race in the last 8 years (and that was 3 years ago). I guess you don’t follow F1? Cause if you did you would not have brought it up. Last year Honda finished 8th in the F1 Constructors Championship(out of 11), behind Ferrari, BMW, Renault, Toyota, Williams Toyota, Red-Bull Renault, and STR-Ferrari.
Honda is a great Company. I’ve never argued that. It’s just that 99% of their PRODUCTION CARS are boring, FWD, lifeless Appliances. Live with it.
