Corvette SS spotted by Popular Mechanics
Here's our latest look at what the Corvette folks have been working up for the ultra-fast coupe class, the 2009 Corvette SS. At least SS is the name most used in referring to this 600-plus-hp, supercharged beauty. You might think it looks like today's Corvette, except for the tape over the fenders and the black covering on the hood. But you'd be wrong.

I love the fact that it is supercharged instead of turbocharged. I don't trust turbos as they operate constantly at extreme temperatures and the early turbos crapped out with severe financial consequences. GM should put this engine in a RWD car with LSD, say something like a RWD Impala without the dreaded cylinder deactivation. Actually, as much as I like the Cadillac Northstar V-8 that is curently available in the Lucerne, I'd like to see a Corvette supercharged engine option in the future RWD Lucerne (with LSD of course).

I think your too old to appreciate how far turbo-chargers have come in the last 30 years.
They were solid enough as they were on the original SAAB 900 Turbo, those engines running easily past 200,000km.
Now, millions of Turbo-chargers are produced annually and mated to sophisticated diesel engines to improve responsiveness and over-taking grunt.
Super-chargers don't off the tunability and power advantages of a turbo-charger, and they also whine, masking the true sound of the engine.
If anything, the fact that super chargers are not substantially utilised on new cars means that turbo-charger systems have had considerably more development and R&D moneys thrown at them.
Lose the rhetoric.

If turbochargers were not reliable, I don't think they would be used on big-rig trucks. Those trucks usually pass over 500k miles before they die (not sure how long the turbo last though.. I would assume it would be changed at least once..) If I remember correctly, a lot of them go over 1 million.
