Corvette ZR1 could beat GT-R’s 7:29 Nurburgring run
While Nissan is out flaunting its new 7:29 run at the Nurburgring Nordschleife with the GT-R, Chevrolet is working hard to beat that time. Last week GM announced the official specs on the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 with 638-hp and 604 lb-ft of torque. It later released a video of the car hitting a top speed of 205-mph.

According to InsideLine, GT-R’s happy moment will pretty short lived. In an interview with Corvette’s Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter, the man behind the ZR1 stated that the full production model will be capable of lapping the Nurburgring in...

if it does than it's going to be an awesome machine...but lets not forget that the GTR-SpecV is coming out in a year, and in the latest tests it's been clocked at the low 7:20s.

Cant wait to hear someone break the 7:10s!

The ZR-1 is the high end performance version of the Vette right? If so then it should be matched against the V-spec version. That is a better apples to apples comparison. Also, I agree with Shredmo, I gotta believe the GT-R is a better bang for the buck. I would still go for the GT-R. Its relatively mild supercar appearance makes it somewhat of a stealth in my opinion. Vette/Porsche owners who have not been paying attention to the GT-R wont know what hit them.

I belief it when they do a official test with an official lap number. And even if they manage to do so, how much will it cost? well over $100k for sure.

And don't forget the Nissan GT-R V-Spec which is rumor to have close to 700hp and 300lbs lighter than the standard model.

Rumors mean nothing. The ZR1 may outrun it, it may not. Lets not discredit either car, both are terrific performers. And I don't think either car will have trouble selling out at whatever price they are offered at, $100k or not.

And I don't think there are any "Official" numbers published on the GT-R that I have seen. Much less the ZR1 (given that it isn't even in production yet).

If the Corvette beat the GT-R, it will also beat the Porsche GT-2, Lambo, and all the other supercars in the market.

But I seriously doubted if it will beat the Nissan GT-R, especially the Nissan GT-R V-Spec. Which is Rumor to have close to 700 hp which way is more than this corvette at 638 hp.

I think ZR1 with over 600BHP and light weight meterials therfore more expenisve car, seems more like a GT-R V Spec competitor. But i still think it will be very hard for the ZR1 to beat the 480BHP regular GT-R's lap time.

I dont think it will. The GTR has too good of balance. Even though I dont care for the looks of the car, the GTR is too well balanced and the Awd with the DCT transmission are almost too perfect to be bested by a more powerful sled like RWD vehicle.

THINK ABOUT IT MAN. TURBOCHARGING A ALREADY RACE READY CAR DOESN'T NECESSARYLY MEAN IT'S GONNA BE FASTER OR MORE POWERFUL. IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK AND EFFORT TO DO THIS. THAT MEANS A TOTALLY NEW ENGINE. THIS MAY TAKE YEARS TO FINALIZE. AS FOR THE TRANS. GOOD LUCK.

So we hear that Porsche is going to a Haldex clutch system for it's AWD cars. That along with the 7 speed DCT should help Porsche make up some ground on the GTR. Of course it would be the turbo that would have to get it. The new NA S has 385HP so not enough to make up lost time on the GTR.

No offense to GM for trying to break the Nissan record(gotta love the competition), but do they realize they're comparing their top of the line, tuned and then tuned up some more - sports car to a "base" model? When Nissan breaks out the SpecV, what will they do then?

GM isn't comparing anything. We are comparing things.

To GM and to most of the people who will actually be buying these things this really doesn't matter. I seriously doubt anyone thinking of buying a ZR1 is teetering between it and the GT-R. And a slightly better lap time on 1 track isn't going to sway to many people.

A sports car costing over 100,000 dollars, the ZR1, boasting about the fact that their car can beat the time lap of a car costing only 70 thousand dollars: the Nissan GTR. Wow, atleast someone is indirectly implying that the 70 thousand dollar GTR is even more worthy of competition than other car's in the 100 thousand dollar bracket (remember Chevy said ZR1 will do better than GTR, they did not even mention GT3, or 997 turbo).

Anyway, the V spec will destroy any time that the ZR1 may set up, because the ZR1 is targeting 7:29, And the V spec being 300 lb lighter and more powerful than the standard GTR which clocks at 7:29, will easily outdo this time. Sorry Corvette, better luck next time, the crown of the ultimate sports car is rest on the laurel of Nissan GTR for a while.
