Crash Tested, Two Coupes Earn Highest Marks

For the first time the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated a group of two-door coupes for crash safety—the Chevrolet Cobalt, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Scion tC, and Volvo C30.

(In the past IIHS has tested two-door convertibles and hatchbacks.) All five of the cars rated acceptable or better in frontal, side, and rear crash tests.

The Volvo C30 (which only comes as a two-door) and Ford Focus two-door model earned the Institute’s highest Top Safety Pick award, indicating they offered Good protection to occupants in front, side, and rear collisions, and offer electronic stability control. The Honda Civic and Chevrolet Cobalt coupes rated just behind with Good front and rear crash test ratings, and Acceptable side crash ratings.

Scion isn't stylish, they are perhaps the most boring looking vehicles on the market, their only marketing gimmick is that with the money you save buying one you can spend it voiding your warranty making it look and perform half decent. And thanks to these crash tests we now know that they aren't even as safe as their competition.

What is it that you find so avant guarde and stylish about a Ford Focus as compared to a Scion tC or xB?

The tC is what happens if you take an attractive design and remove all emotion from it. The xB is an abortion of trying to be trendy by designing a box.

And as to the focus, I think the new lines work well for it and the Grill although not entirely original works well with those lines to make a decent looking car.

Describe all the emotion designed into and added to the Focus.

Look at the A-pillar. It is bent. 5mph faster and the driver space will disappear. Weak A-Pillar if you ask me. It may get a good rating at THIS SPEED, but it is not a safe vehicle overall. Look at other crash video and focus on the A-pillar, the most important part of structure design. W/o a strong A-pillar all are in vain.

since saftey is such a high standard its most cars today, i never pay attention to it. its never even on my mind when im thinking about buying another car
