Crossover Shootout! Which is Sexier The BMW X6 SAV Or The New Land Rover LRX?

Sexy, sensible and sleek best describes the latest offerings in the ever popular crossover segment.

Two of the best in breed arguably are the all new BMW X6 and the Land Rover LRX.

While both compete for a slightly different market they both compass style and utility like nothing before them.  Gone forever is the box on four wheels the typified the market only a scant few years ago, replaced by dynamic design and unparalleled utility.

Tell us why one does the better job of combining styling and function and best represents the best in breed.

The LRX is a work of art, and much nicer aesthetially speaking IMO. It doesnt try to be something its not, and is much more of a coupe than the BMW(which has 4 doors) will ever be.

The difference in price will be enormous though, I dont see how it is fair to compare the two.

any figures thrown around yet for the LRX?

Less than the LR2/Freelander.

Do you know what the word coupé means when referring to a car ? Try to find out and look again at the pictures of these cars. Which one is the coupé now ?

Yes I do. But just in case you didnt here it is:

A coupé (from the French verb couper, to cut) or coupe is a car body style, the precise definition of which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and over time. Coupés are often sporty variants of sedan (or saloon—see American and British English spelling differences) body styles, reduced from 4 doors to 2, with a close-coupled interior offering either two seats or 2+2 seating (space for two passengers up front and for two occasional passengers in the rear).

So there you have it, in simple terms a coupe is a vehicle with 2 doors (the LRX) not one with 4 (X6).

@w209w114

Yeah... you took that from wikipedia. Here is a more technical description:

The SAE distinguishes a coupé from a sedan (saloon) primarily by interior volume; SAE standard J1100 defines a coupé as a fixed-roof automobile with less than 33 ft³ (0.93 m³, 934 L) of rear interior volume. A car with a greater interior volume is technically a two-door sedan, not a coupé, even if it has only two doors. Some car manufacturers may nonetheless choose to use the word coupe or coupé to describe such a model, e.g., the Cadillac Coupe de Ville.

I actually like the new Infiniti FX50 more than either of these two...when the first FX came out, I thought wtf - very ugly and pointless - but it grew on me, dunno...makes a statement, and it's got the muscle to back it up...and it arguable created the segment...

Come on, is this a joke or something? The X6 is an ugly 4-door reincarnation of the AMC Eagle. Anyone who drives this thing will be the laughing stock of the neighborhood. The X5 looks way better and will be more functional. The LRX has class and style, something that BMW knows nothing about.

Bingo. Wow, I was trying to figure out what this hideous X6 reminded me of and you hit it on the head...AMC Eagle. In general Bimmer's are pretty nice looking, but the X6 is just awful. The wheel gap is atrocious, so that might be some of it. Definitely the Land Rover for my pick here, although I'm kinda liking the new FX.

X6 sexy?!?!?! LOL!!! Of the two, I'd take the LRX (easily). I'm sure the Bimmer will sell, but it looks like a turtle from the side view....not very athletic looking. I even see a little Prius in that shape!!!

I agree IhavearedS2000, FX50 ALL THE WAY!!!

"unparalleled utility"

Agent009, please tell us all how the X6 has "unparalleled utility" compared to the X5 and almost every other SUV out there.

I know you are biased, but I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. The X6 is the the most hideous creation ever roam the streets.

LRX by leaps and bounds. The X6 will be an initial hit, then will die off slowly. The LR has a timless 21st century appeal to it.

Thank you! You are absolutely right!! The X6 is BMW's version of the R-Class and at least you can do something with the MBZ while the X6 is just wrong and has no place.

I really don't think the X6 is BMW's version of the R-class. The X6 is designed to be a sporty-but-tall-"coupe-ish" vehicle, while the R-class was designed to be a luxury people mover (effectively, a luxury minivan). Definitely not the same design objectives.

One voice of reason… thank you, yes one is concept, one is in production.

And for all those who like the LRX… too bad, I wait for a “Defender”, cheap, ugly, old “Defender 90” that is in production now. I wonder how long will you wait for the LRX. It is pretty no doubt, they all are, concepts that is.

Personally, I like the X6 better. To me, Land Rover and BMW have different looks to them. BMWs tend to be more sleek and stylish while Land Rover gives off a more masculine presence, which is not bad. But in this case, I like the X6 better. The LRX isn't even a production car yet so we'll see when it is.

First of all, the X6 isn't a crossover, SUV or SAV, it's a SAC.

Both are ugly and both don't look as though they have much room to carry around any activity gear.

Regardless of how pointless the X6 may be people don't seem to factor in style & image as the major selling point here. Same reason a CLS sells even though it's impractical when compared to an E-Class.

I personally think the X6 looks better than the X5 & they're tons of other people who feel the same way I do. These are the same people who will buy a 3-series coupe over a more practical 3er sedan or even wagon for that matter.

Style, badging, performance, & substance, that's what drives people to pay the premium for an X6 over an X5.

X6 Is the winner, First of the LRX is a Concept, You never know how its going to turn out by the time it hits the showrooms. We have seem many Rover Concepts that have changed alot and turned uglier then they were as a concept (the usual thing to do).

It also comes down to a persons style/opinion because one is a curvy smoth looking son of a b1tch (X6) and the rover is a rough edged classy kind of looking mean lean machene.

These two cars cannot be compared. And if i was to copare both of them, i would defenatly choose the X6. If i was offered a free X6 or LRX, I would go for X6. If i was offered same price for both cars, i would go for X6.

Also, one of the majour factors when makign this kind of decision has to be; American VS German.

It will be a problem, becuase if they start cheaping out more on the parts and assembly its going to be a failure of a brand.

Basing on the country of origin/ownership, you can tell alot about the car.
Example, Acura TSX/TL (High quality interiors/exteriors, great build quality, bulletproof engines/economical) VS 08/09 Malibu (Shit/OK quality interiors/exteriors, Poor mexican lawnmower build quality, Poor engines and shit on gas, alot of gadgetry to attract consumers)

you get some good point like how LRX is a concept car and may not put into production.
but your American VS German stuff is kinna odd. last time i checked, X5 are made in US.

It's funny you say that, I had the exact opposite reaction. I hated the pictures of the X6, but I loved in person at the NAIAS. Simply amazing inside and out.

X6 hands down, the LRX looks like a mutant Ford Edge. Seriously, there is no comparison.

I don't like any of them, but if I had to choose one, I'll go with the LRX.
