DETROIT AUTO SHOW- 001 shows you exclusive video of the new Lexus IS-F
Much of the development of the new IS-F took place at Fuji Speedway and the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan. The IS-F is based on the proven rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS, which is equipped with a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension. As well as the IS performs, Lexus engineers demanded much more of the all-new IS-F. The result is a performance tuned 5.0-liter V8 engine, topped with specially engineered heads fed by a two-stage intake system, that produces 400-plus horsepower and more than 350 ft.-lbs. of torque. The all-new IS-F is equipped with engine-oil and transmission-fluid coolers for high-speed performance and a cylinder head-scavenging oil pump for high g-force driving.

If the video above does not play, you can also view it by clicking here:
Lexus IS-F Video

The IS-F engine is mated to the world's first eight-speed direct sport-shift transmission. A new torque-converter lock-up control was developed that allows for a direct, crisp gear change through the constant lock-up of the torque converter in second through eighth gears. In Drive mode, the IS-F transmission performs with great smoothness, and the torque converter allows for great launch ability for fast standing-start acceleration that will register a zero-to-60 time in less than 4.9 seconds.

This unique transmission also features an advanced Manual mode. A pair of paddles located within a fingertip's reach behind the steering wheel enables the driver to make ultra-fast up-shift gear changes within a tenth of a second. Downshifts are accompanied by automated and incredibly precise throttle blips to match engine RPM to vehicle speed.

The impressive acceleration achieved by the IS-F requires it be equipped with heavy-duty Brembo brakes designed to the specifications of the Lexus engineering team. Huge, 14.2-inch cross-drilled front discs are gripped by rigid, powerful six-piston aluminum calipers, while 13.6-inch rear cross-drilled discs feature two-piston calipers. High-friction brake pads are equipped on all four wheels. The brakes are finished with the Lexus name displayed on the calipers, a first for a Lexus production vehicle.

The IS-F features custom-designed 19-inch forged alloy wheels as standard. The wheels were built to Lexus specifications by BBS and are surrounded by high-performance sport tires.

The attention to performance also extends to a modified suspension that lowers the entire car by more than a half-inch when compared to the base IS, and one full inch when compared to IS models equipped with 18-inch wheels. This specially modified suspension allows for an exciting and energetic drive, whether on a race track or the streets.

The IS-F features an all-new three-mode version of Lexus' Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. In addition to the Normal mode, the new VDIM features a Sport mode that allows the driver to push the car even further before its braking-, throttle- and steering-control systems kick in. The third VDIM system mode is Off, which allows the driver to push the IS-F to its ultimate level of handling performance.

The attention to performance is complemented by modified styling cues that differentiate the IS-F from the standard IS. Lexus engineers provided the IS-F with a dual-exhaust system and quad-tail pipes, wider front fenders, and a larger grille and rear spoiler. Both the hood and lower intake were enlarged to accommodate and cool the V8 engine.

Like the exterior, the interior of the IS-F receives unique styling with aluminized composite trim and special surface treatments. The instrument panel includes an oil-temperature gauge and shift indicator-lights, while the "F" logo is showcased on the steering wheel and rear-center console.

In addition to the usual Lexus standards of comfort and convenience, the interior of the IS-F features specially shaped and trimmed seats, which hold the driver comfortably and securely in place. The special sport seats are available in black or a unique high-contrast white and black trim.

"The intent of creating the IS-F was not to be a competitor to other performance-sport sedans," said Carter. "Rather, the goal was to create a true performance sedan in a uniquely Lexus way-one that is totally authentic with a unique interpretation of raw driving thrill at all speeds and provides a whole new definition of 'usable power.'"

The IS-F will arrive at Lexus dealerships in early 2008.

I love sauerkraut and whenever I go to my favorite restaurant "Gustav's Jagerhaus" I always order it.

I do go to a very good Japanese restaurant called "Taiko", but I'm sorry the only sushi I order is the Caliornia rolls with plenty of wasabi.

I'm interested in riding in one of the 8 speed cars. Our Mercedes has the 7 speed and I haven't gotten confused or anything when shifting manually. Hell its actually kind of fun. For me it lets me feel the revs more in each gear. I haven't made a top speed run ...yet... but I am looking forward to seeing how it'll run when I do.

Agent001 is right this Lexus is aggressive and sinister looking, but I don't want that in my car.

I have been playing guitar for decades, ever since I was 5 years old and I like the traditional looking guitars like the Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster as well as the Gibson Les Paul and ES335, but there are guitar companies like Ibanez and BC Rich that make guitars that look like satan himself designed them and the only guitar players that play them are the hideous detuned death metal loops.

I prefer Stevie Ray Vaughan.

You got to admit it. The more you look at it, the more you like it. It will grow on you (maybe slowly) if you still don't like it at this moment.

If you want the coming M3 looks as aggressive, you better run over the M3 threads to complain. Don't give the wrong signal to BMW, otherwise, you will see what you don't want to see for the coming M3. ^0^

For those who still question BMW's sport sedan dominance, edmunds' Inside Line summed it up perfectly in an IS350 vs. 330i comparison test:

"And when we reminded ourselves that the true mission of a sport sedan is to provide enjoyment derived from driving, not quoting performance numbers to your buddies or convincing whomever which is the better deal, it always came back to the BMW."

I couldn't have said it better.

Lexus1, the BMW is not enjoyable?

You sound like the Lexus saleperson I talked to the other day when I told him I was interested in the LS460 and the S-Class. A8 and 750iL and he said the LS460 blows the Merc, Audi and BMW out of the water in every way.

Lexus1, you are so... ahh, there's no word to describe it. Will, you have to say- this guy (probably one of the Lexus lovers who were kicked off) is the logical for your team.

"THE LEXUS PROVIDES ENJOYMENT AND RELIABILITY. THE BMW IS NOT EVEN ENJOYABLE."

HaLOL! #1: The IS-F hasn't been driven yet, and I doubt you've driven it, so how do you know it's enjoyable? I can't disprove it, but you can't prove it yet, either.

#2: I bet only about 5% of people buying a care in this class care about reliability at all. That's a really dumb argument- with a sport sedan, there's sacrifices to be made, and enthusiasts are more than ready for that.

#3: I don't think there's ever been a BMW, in the last decade, that wasn't enjoyable to drive.

Yes, as with anything 'to each his own' and we definitely don't see anyone crossgin party lines on this site...all BMW or all Lexus...Audi etc.

In the most commented thread in the history of this great site I did say that this car does look a little tacked on HOWEVER, I admit that it comes across slightly better in the video.

Not flip-flopping but after 'studying' the video and IF the car can deliver the "less than 4.9" stats then I WILL take one in charcoal. One caveat is that this might be the first time a factory tuned car will be taken to the shop to "de-tune" those exhaust pipes and that grill.

There are a few diehard BMW enthusiasts on this site, and a few Audi lovers, but it's basically Germany vs. Lexus, and a few scattered Infiniti fanboys. The car looks like a typical boy racer car with those scoops. The IS feels cheap with light doors and plastic door handles (unlike Mercedes AMGs). IS-F is nothing else but cheap speed. German cars (i.e. Mercedes, BMW, and Audi) were built for the Autobahn. They are stable, solid, and smooth at high speeds. With M power, AMG, and Audi RS and S, you get that and the acceleration and handling. The IS-F will never feel like a German car. It is for a different kind of driver, as I stated in my first sentence.

fkhuang2000 , calling lexus cheap, doesnt tell that you what a lexus is. Lexus Has better quality than any of the M3 or the RS4. and yeah rite , plastic, dude you need to wake up and look at the bmw 335i , now this thing is made out of REAL plastic. Look at the over head console, push it up and it just bounces, and that does it. Also performance is what matters, and I cant give an answer whether the M3 or IS-f or the RS4 will prevail over the others. Its just not educated to say something now because we dont even know what are the exact specifications of the IS-f or the next M3. I would just say its going to be a good competition between all of them.

Mercedes and Chrysler have a lot of things to do with each other. Mercedes, I believe uses Chryler technologies on their engines, and Chrysler uses Mercedes' suspensions. They're the same company. It's common sense to use both companies to create vehicles.

Is this typical Lexus fanboy propaganda to discredit Mercedes? Mercedes doesn't use Chrysler parts. Chrysler uses some Mercedes parts and that's it. Just because Chrysler uses some Mercedes parts, transmissions or engines doesn't make Mercedes a Chrysler.

What I'm saying is that Mercedes, BMW, and Audi all have a relationship with a less-prestigious brand. Lexus may not have an ultra-luxury brand, but in all honesty, why have one. They don't sell. You invest millions of dollars on a vehicle you'd be lucky to sell 2,000 of every year. Anyway, Toyota and Lexus have a relationship, Audi and Volkswagen do, BMW and MINI do, and Mercedes and Chrysler do. You guys who are denying this are those who don't want a, quote: "Lexus Fanboy", to prove you wrong. Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but I think I just did. You can't even try to tell me that Mercedes/BMW/Audi are all powerful because they have nothing to do with lower luxury brands, because guess what, they do.

LexusIS350,

I don't understand what you're trying to say. Mercedes doesn't run Chrysler and neither does Chrysler run Mercedes. Both these BRANDS are run by the mother firm, DaimlerChrysler. DaimlerChrysler is the major brand that runs sub-brands such as Chrysler, Dodge, Mercedes, Smart etc.

You're coming across as very idiotic. And you still owe me pictures of your "supposed Lexus LS460" which you "purchased".

Mdalle - the you forgot to mention that the M3 WILL NOT have over or even close to 350lbs of torque. Not from a 4.2L V8. I would say BMW designed the M3 to compete with the RS4 and to be quite honest probably didnt give a rats a$$ about anything from Lexus. It would be safe to say that BMW is at least a bit concerned and should be if Lexus gets the handling right. The design? - I like it but I respect other peoples views and concerns. Although I usually respect your views, I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about.

If Lexus gave two shits about manual transmissions, #1, they'd have put one in the IS350.

#2, don't you think they would've ANNOUNCED it and PRIDED THEMSELVES in the fact that the IS-F has a manual? It doesn't. Like Mercedes's AMG division, their F cars will probably all have automatics.

Lexus,

Don't go fooling yourself. The audience Lexus has aimed for with the new IS-F don't care for three pedals, so I would not expect a manual version of the IS-F, ever.

It also shows how dissapointing the IS-F design is when all the Lexus fans comment that it will look better in a differnt colour.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel there guys.

A manual and an LSD would be nice in a car with 400+ hp. My first car had 90hp (RX-7), it was great fun doing one tire burnouts. Not sure I would care for a 1 tire burnout with a 400+ hp car.

Matthew, how can you be so sure that Lexus won't offer a stick version for the IS-F? In fact, not to long ago everyone was saying that the Lexus IS500 now call IS-F were just a concept and that Lexus will "Never" make a true sport car. But look at it now, it will come out of production really soon.

Lexus will probably announce how hp this Lexus IS-F truelly has;when they know how much the new M3 and C-class AMG has first.

And yes I understand your doubt that Lexus might not offer the stick version for the IS-F. But all we can do now is wait; only time will tell. In my opinion Lexus will offer a stick version for all of it high performance Lexus.

"Matthew, how can you be so sure that Lexus won't offer a stick version for the IS-F? In fact, not to long ago everyone was saying that the Lexus IS500 now call IS-F were just a concept and that Lexus will "Never" make a true sport car. But look at it now, it will come out of production really soon."

That's completely irrelevant!

What does developing a manual transmission have to do with developing a CAR?

Everyone knew that the IS-F would come out- if all the German brands did it, which they have, then Lexus found it too irresistable to not follow them!

Mark my words: this car won't be offered with a manual, ever. Read my previous post, regarding your previous post.

Really great point.

We should really wait until the both the ISF and new M3 are out before making performance judgements.

Let's stick to talking about design and whose mom is the fattest for the time being.

Accept it, Manual transmission is dying... No race sport caring about performance is still using Manual.

BTW, It seems that BMW's SMG auto sucks and their Manual performs even worst. M5 with manual was just beaten by two autos.
