DETROIT AUTO SHOW: 2007 Tundra CrewMax
Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the all-new 2007 Tundra CrewMax full-size pickup at a press conference here today at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. CrewMax, arriving at dealers in March, will join the Tundra Regular Cab and Tundra Double Cab models, which arrive in February.

Designed, engineered and built in America, the formidable Tundra line-up will set a new standard in the full-size pickup truck segment for performance, capability, standard safety features and styling.

Larger in every dimension than the model it replaces, the 2007 Tundra is available in 31 model configurations, with a choice between 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains. The 2007 Tundra offers three cab styles, three wheelbases, three bed lengths, three engines, and three trim levels. Tundra has been engineered for "true truckers" and can be configured to serve as a work truck, recreational truck or luxury family truck.

Tundra offers three cab styles: Regular Cab, four-door Double Cab, and the super-sized four-door CrewMax with the segment's leading rear-seat legroom. Tundra Regular Cab comes in DX trim level and can be upgraded to SR5 with an option package; the Double Cab and CrewMax models come in SR5 and Limited trim levels. Tundra offers high levels of user technology, including available Bluetooth cell phone compatibility, high-end audio and an optional navigation system that integrates a wide-screen rear backup camera.

Power for Big Jobs
The 2007 Tundra offers three levels of power. In Regular and Double Cab models, a standard 4.0-liter V6 produces 236 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and a healthy 266 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. The mid-grade option for these models – and standard for the CrewMax models – is an enhanced version of the proven Tundra's 4.7-liter i-Force V8 producing 271 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 313 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 3,400 rpm.

Tundra models equipped with the 4.0-liter engine will have city/highway fuel economy ratings of 17/20 mpg. Tundra 4x2 and 4x4 models equipped with the 4.7-liter engine will both have city/highway fuel economy ratings of 15/18 mpg.

Updated flex lock-up torque converter control enhances transmission response and efficiency. For added driver control, the Tundra five-speed automatic features uphill / downhill shift logic. All Tundra models feature sequential shift as standard equipment.

i-Force 5.7 – A Force to be Reckoned With
The Tundra's trump card under the hood is an all-new 5.7-liter i-Force V8 that is available in every model configuration. Specifically designed for full-size pickup applications, the i-Force 5.7 uses a long-stroke configuration (stroke dimension of 4.02 in. is more than the bore width of 3.70 in.). As a result, in addition to its impressive 381 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, the i-Force 5.7 unleashes 401 lb.-ft of peak torque at 3,600 rpm.
Chassis Built for Capability, Control and Ride Quality
The 2007 Tundra is built on a new frame that is optimized for vigorous work duty, impact safety, and ride quality. There are three Tundra wheelbases: 126.8 inches for Regular Cab/standard bed models; 145.7 inches for Regular Cab/long bed, Double Cab/standard bed and CrewMax models, and a massive 164.6 inches for Double Cab/long bed models.

The Tundra's advanced TripleTech frame uses wide, full-boxed frame rails for the front portion, reinforced C-channel under the cab and an open C-channel underneath the bed to maximize strength, ride quality and durability.

The double A-arm front suspension uses coil-over spring shock units, and a front-mounted steering rack helps enhance steering feel and response. The Tundra is equipped with the largest standard wheels in the segment – 18 x 8 inches with 255/70 R18 tires. Limited grade models step up to standard 18 x 8-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with wider 275/65 R18 tires. As an option, Limited models can be outfitted with factory-optional 20-inch alloy wheels with 275/55 R20 tires.

An optional TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Off-Road Package is available and combines off-road tuned suspension featuring Bilstein gas-charged mono-tube shock absorbers; 275/65 R18 B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A off-road tires on unique 18-inch alloy wheels; fog lamps, and special graphics.

The Segment's Most Advanced Brakes
Toyota equipped all new-model Tundras with the segment's most advanced standard braking systems. The four-wheel disc brake system uses large ventilated rotors front and rear: the front rotors measure 13.9 inches in diameter and 1.26-inches thick, with four-piston calipers. The rear discs measure 13.6 x 0.71-inch and use two-piston calipers. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) are standard on all models.

A New Level of Pickup Truck Traction Management
The 2007 Tundra scores another first for the full -size pickup truck segment by equipping every model with the company's most advanced traction-enhancing dynamic control. First, the standard Automatic Limited-slip Differential (A LSD) provides computer-controlled cross-axle torque management that allows some wheel-spin (necessary for some surfaces).

The combination of A-LSD and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) as standard equipment on every model is a significant first in the segment.

4x4 Capability
The combination of A-LSD and VSC gives the two-wheel drive Tundra models far better traction in more situations than could once be expected from a pickup truck. For more demanding conditions, Tundra's 4x4 configurations offer a part-time, shift-on-the fly four-wheel drive system featuring a six-pinion planetary reduction gearset to provide HIGH and LOW ranges. The driver selects the drive mode using a dial on the dash.

The V6 and i-Force 4.7 V8 Tundra models' rear differential uses a 9.5-inch ring gear, and the i-Force 5.7 models step up to a 10.5-inch ring gear – one of the largest in the segment. All Tundra differentials are made using new machining technology: "face hob" gear cutting for ring and pinion gears yields stronger tooth form and a greater engagement area for increased torque capacity and reduced gear noise.

Safety
On the safety front, all Tundra models feature the STAR safety system as standard equipment. As a result, Tundra will offer one of the most comprehensive suite of standard safety equipment in the full-size pickup market. The STAR safety system found on all of Toyota's SUVs includes ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC). Tundra is the first full-size pickup to feature standard front and rear seat side and roll-sensing side curtain airbags in all models. Three-point seatbelts and adjustable headrests for all seating positions are likewise firsts in the segment. The front seatbelts integrate pretensioners and force limiters.

Three Bed Sizes
Tundra Regular Cab and Double Cab models are offered in standard bed (78.7-inch) or long bed (97.6-inch) configurations; the CrewMax comes with a short bed (66.7-inch). In all models, the bed measures 22.2 inches deep. The Tundra's new lockable all-steel tailgate, with tailgate assist, can be effortlessly opened and closed with just two fingers – and it can easily be removed. A standard cargo lamp provides generous illumination at night.

Interior Storage
Toyota maximized space and added convenience within all Tundra cabs. A concealed compartment to the right of the shift lever can hold a Thomas® guidebook. The built-in toolbox behind the rear seat of all models provides clean, accessible storage for the jack, handle and lug wrench. In Double Cab and CrewMax models, the rear seat backs fold in an easy one-hand operation to provide a flat floor storage area.

it's going to be hard for Toyota to lure away fleet customers from Ford, Chevy, and Dodge, because those three have been the only ones around, making service and sales easier, because you aren't suddenly at a new dealer and need to find a new source for parts.

BTW, Edmunds just tested it and it gets to 60 in only 6.3 seconds. Nice engine like I said, exterior styling isn't the best and inside the domestic pickups are nicer. But the engine is nice.

WHY, the power and performance is more than any other pickup, 0-60 in only 6.3 seconds. Of course the interior and exterior aren't the best, but I have yet to see the interior in real life and only had glimpses of the exterior.

No Chewy, but what you are failing to understand as well as many others that think full size trucks not necessary, is that 6.3 0 to 60 does nothing for me, more horsepower (Nissan), does nothing, how pretty it looks inside...does nothing.

It matters about the hard-ass working part of the truck and guys (and girls) that know which trucks are the best for that won't ever by a Toyota, or Nissan, or Honda.

So you are saying that Toyota trucks aren't tough enough for handling the construction site??? That is believable, really is. You probably also believe that Chevy trucks are the most reliable full size trucks too huh? Well Chevy will soon stop claiming that when Full size Toyota's get old enough. And about the tough part - Toyota's survive the harshest climates in Africa, Asia, and Australia year after year off road - so I would suppose it would be fine on a construction site. But then again you are the "truck guy" so go ahead and buy the toughest truck.

==============================
Well, to answer you....no Chevy isn't the best truck around. And yes you are correct...Nissan and Toyota do live in the Outback, and deserts full of sand and nothingness. What I failed to say [completely my ignorance] is on the American front, American trucks are preferred for the work that is done here. On the other hand I would have no problem driving a Land Cruiser, or Rodeo, or what ever the model is in the mountains of Asia or the Outback of Australia. Then again going back to my previous statement with someone else about different engines and configurations that each country gets from the manufacturer has a part to play in this as well.

Wilco:
The typical truck guy is has a high school diploma and nothing more so I would not be surprised at them not looking at things with a level-head.

That was a very level-headed statement yourself. Very keen you are Mr. Genius.

The short bed regular cab model with the 381HP 5.7L engine and 6-speed auto tranny will be the model in short supply. With the addition of upcoming engine mods, this this will easily pump out 400HP. WOW!!! This model appeals to baby boomers like me who alway's wanted to own a muscle car, but need the practility of a pickup truck.

Actually, better fuel economy (Edmunds observed) than the Chevy Silverado with the 6-liter V8. Sure not by much, but Chevy's Active Fuel Managment (diplacement on demand does nothing in the real world, only good to fool the EPA test) I am sure for the 08 ratings the Toyota will get higher or the same ratings.

great point, Chewy. I have been commenting for months that the EPA rules will look unfavorably on highway mileage for big pushrod V-6s and V-8s. And part of that is likely due to the displacement on demand myth. Yeah, it works fine when you're coasting down a hill, but just step on the gas, on all 8 inefficient cylinders fire up again.

YOU DON'T BUY A TRUCK FOR FUEL ECONOMY!

Sorry for the all caps, but will you people stop with this fuel economy crap. Yes it would be nice but that's why you have a sensible two door coupe or sporty sedan for your "other" driving needs. And if a truck is your only vehicle then you don't care about fuel economy at all, and probably don't have to since you have the life to afford it.

And the whole displacement on demand thing only works for the interstate/highways. Around town your still going to get 12-15 mpg.

MarkMark - 1/8/2007 4:13:49 PM

Wilco - Here is what I am going to tell you. You have never owned a truck and most likely never will. So talking to you about it is pointless since you don't understand how people think when it comes to trucks, and in that regard you don't understand the different lives people can lead. Maybe they lead a simple life and can afford a few extra dollars for gas. Maybe they are a stupid redneck and have nothing to do but have wild love with their dog and drink themselves to sleep but they love their big trucks and that's what they want to spend their money on?

Why should someone spend $115,000 on a SL55 or SL65 and get worse gas mileage than a truck, wait...maybe it's because that want to go fast and look cool! I don't know, you tell me because I'm just a dumb redneck who likes trucks!! Is that it, did I grasp your logic yet?

mclarensmps - I see your point and whereas you look at the commercial aspect from that point I would look at the one that meets my needs "commercially" and choose that one even if it means getting the one that is not as good in the MPG department. I know, I'm a dumb&@* for saying that, but I agree from a fleet standpoint you have to look at all the costs.

The U.S. trucks only have 2 advantages over this Toyota:

1. Styling. The Tundra's lines should be cleaner and tougher looking. But like others here have said, this doesn't really matter to people who just want the best work truck they can buy.

2. Buy-American clientele. There's more U.S. loyalty to pickups then there are to cars. A lot of these meatheads don't care if the Toyota is built here, they just won't buy it. Luckily for Toyota these guys are a dying breed.

When it comes to functionality, reliability and overall cost of ownership, Toyota wins for sure.

And don't forget that those union-built U.S. trucks have close to $2000 per truck in additional labor costs compared to Toyota...the Big 3 have no choice but to cheapen components to offset this cost.

Well alot of people who buy truck are union and guess what they are not going to support a truck thats not a Union built truck.. Oh and I really think GM blew away Toyota in the interior design. I am union and I drive a Full Sized truck. I need one, not for my job but my remodeling business. The Toyota tail lites look like they would get broken the first time you loaded the bed because they stick out the side. Plus the extended cab looks to have a huge blind spot and in a truck you want to see whats around you . This thing looks like it would be a pain to drive. Just my thoughts.. its an ugly truck.. Oh on the union thing.. Last time I checked the Small truck is build by UAW but is this one?

The same idiots complaining about the big 3 trucks and how horrible the fuel economy is and global warming and how the world is coming to an end, and in the same breath can justify buying or even thinking of this truck shows how bias thinking individuals can have. And try to hide it by saying well Toyota builds a better truck. No one can build a better truck than the domestics because they have had the market for so long. Do I like this segment, no. But to be so obviously blind its sickening. The fuel economy is not even close to GM vehicles by the way.

I have owned nothing but "American" branded & built vehicles (Cars/Trucks) for the past 25 years. I purchased a new '05 Tundra SR5 Double Cab and for the past 18 mths I have been a rolling advertisement for what a truck should be!! I only wish I had opted for the 4x4, an expensive option, but when you get stuck in the middle of 1,000 acres, well worth it!! The bigger '07 has me counting my pennies in anticipation of "the next best thing since pizza and beer" I pull a 21 ft Bass boat with the '05 4.7 liter, and although it pulls really nice, the bigger engine, 5.7 liter of the '07 is really going to help me get to where I'm going in comfort and style. I will definitely opt for the 4x4 this time as well. I'm not really in love with the interior, (the dashboard) too stylized for me, but my '05 has not been back to the dealer for all the common "loose items" that I typically experienced with former GMC's, Ford's and Chevy's!!!! so if quality comes with style, then I say, style yourself to death. As far fuel economy, I spend $150 a weekend with my bassboat, so what's another couple gallons/dollars really matter. I will be first in line when they show up at the dealer!!! I hope to have all my pennies counted by then....

Both GM and Ford are in the design process of coming out with a smaller diesel for the half tons. My real question is will Toyota have a trans to put behind a diesel. The new trans they have might be good enough but lately Toyota is having trans problems.. Know a service tech for a Toyota dealer .. thats where I got the info. and he is pro Toyota all the way.

Toyota trans problems! Toyota had an early problem with 2007 Camry V6 6 speed auto trans. It was an assembly problem not a design problem (a significant difference). A washer was installed with the polished side or finished side in the wrong direction. This caused the trans to skip shift. The production problem was identified and corrected swiftly. There are no "problems" that are true quality issues with Toyota trans. There have also been some re-mappings of shift criterion because the system being designed for fuel economy hung in the highest available gear. This was a very isolated complaint and will rectify itself through "learn" software in the cpu or if necessary can be re-programmed. To para-phrase Clinton, "define"theword problem". Problems are Chrysler Trans's in the 90's when it wasn't a question if it would fail but when it would fail.
I'm not trying to start a big deal here I just thought I could put the topic in the right perspective.

Impressive power 0n the 5.7!It is my opinion the Nisan is the most capable off road 1/2 ton 4x4 and I am not impressed with Nisan either. This toy is too long and too low for anything serious off road.Any all wheel drive minivan could out drive this toy off road, how pathetic! I think Toyota went in the wrong direction with going so big and long, Toy should have created a 3/4 or a one ton if they wanted a work truck.People buy one ton trucks for work not 1/2 ton trucks.I liked the 3/4 size Tundra from a few years ago, this is too big.The gas prices will dictate sales numbers and this will soon return to 3/4 size! I hope with a better off road sticker package! How about with a serious suspension package capable of blasting down the Baja 1000 hitting large bumps at 120mph.Unfortunatly I am dreaming.A nice princess if you like 12mpg and car like off road prowness!

Why are they talking about the C frame like it is something new? American trucks used to do that for years! American trucks followed imports to become a fully boxed frames & Toyota is moving backwards to a C chanel! And this article is talking like it is a breakthrough? A limited slip traction control!, is this a car! A real truck would have selectable lockers! A nice car with great power and towing ability. Not a worthy truck if you want something capable off road! Most vehicles get better, not this one.I also hear the green people are picketing Toyota because of this POS.
