DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Biggest story of the year? Toyota out Aston's Aston with $35K Aston R8 Hybrid?
Toyota will present its FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept at the Detroit Auto Show.
It will be a super car powered by a 3.5-L V6 engine with more than 400 horsepowers working together with a hybrid powertrain with a 0-60 time of around 4 seconds.
Although a mere concept, what you see here will certainly be what you get at the Detroit auto show. The FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept that will unveil at the NAIAS will be the size of a Lexus SC430, except wider. There will also be room for 4 passengers. The engine will be visible through a hole in the hood, similar to that of the Audi R8, where the engine is visible through a piece of glass.
Inside, the aggressive design from the outside is carried onto the interior, which has sharp edges throughout the cabin. Yes, it may look cool in the pictures, but the question really is: will this ever be made into production? Kevin Hunter, VP of the Calty Design Research reports that the price tag will be unheard of for something like this and it will fall in the mid $30,000 range if they build it.
AUTO SPIES PERSPECTIVE: Are you kidding me? BUILD IT NOW!!!

Definitely like nothing else. Eventhough it's a concept, I'm sure design bits will make it to near future IS models.

Dropping in the current 340hp GS450h hybrid system plus cutting some weight will do the job: 0-60 under 5s, 30mpg.
400hp hybrid and $35,000? too good to be true.

Wow!.....this is nutt, crazy I says, it definitely a "Stunning" concept. I sure hope this baby come into production soon. And for the price fall in the mid $30K, I have two please. One with the same color as the above concept and a ruby red one. I want delivery by next Christmas to my house "ASAP" LOL:) With over 400 hp and with 0-60 time of around 4 seconds is absolute crazy; especially with a price tag like that.
If this baby come into production I think it will either replace the current Lexus SC430 or it might be the new Supra? any guess? I don't what badge it come in, I want one for sure. I said it again, it definite and very beautiful and stunning concept car. If this baby come into production, it will fly off the dealer lot like crazy. Toyota/Lexus rock baby:)

Yes you did miss something...you see on autospies, for people to actually read and comment on articles, the mods create titles that get people really annoyed...how do they do this you ask? They find an article (generally from Toyota as a press release), manipulate the title by adding/editing in some key fightin words and voila! You have flamewars.. So for this article why not use Aston to compare a Toyota too when in reality there not even in the same league..but it creates buzz..Again, you can't get better advertising for free..is it me or have there been an unusual number of Toyota news articles of late?

Just change the wheels so they have BMW on them, that'll give it soul.
I doubt the $35K price, but this car would definitely scare the crap out of the competition. If it stayed true to the above, it would have the numbers and definitely the styling. Attract attention for all the right reasons, unlike Bangle.
If they do replace the SC, I can see it looking a little like this.

the supra needs a comeback.
if you get 400hp for $35k, there's something missing from the car, like a transmission or suspension. it's a nearly impossible price figure. even americans can't pull that off with dealer incentives.

why should toyota not be able to do this?
after all, toyota IS the company that developed "QUALITY AT NO COST" with their innovative production system. whereby, even COROLLAS are BETTER BUILT and MORE RELIABLE than any $50,000+ euro car! (quality of BUILD not being = to quality of materials)
if toyota can do THAT, why shouldn't they soon offer HORSEPOWER at no cost? (well, maybe just a LITTLE extra cost.)

Has anyone noticed that the profile of this Toyota concept car looks like the profile of the Lexus sports car wrapped in all that disguise!!!!! The rear tailight and the similar front end too... I wouldn't be suprised if Toyota was using this as a concept to see what sort of reaction they would get with the public and use some of its styling cues. It also looks to be on the same platform as the Lexus.
Before anyone misunderstands my post, I do not think this is the next Lexus supercar just a very similar rendition.

Ok, I will calmly explain myself. First, to my eyes it doesn't look very good. Seconds, the Camry Hybrid with 1/2 the claimed power is about 30,000 (with some decent options) So I really don't think that if this ever came out it would be so cheap. That was the problem with this article.

I think the mid $35K is just the base price on the lower end one. But I think if you want the top end version it probably going to cost more than that. So here is the question to all the car enthuasist, "spelling" do you think Toyota would sell it that cheap? In my opinion Toyota could it, but they probably sale it for a littler higher probably around $38K for the lower end version. And the high end probably cost way more than that, especially with all the option. But hey I might be wrong, you figure they want to make money when they sale this baby. But no matter how they are going to sales this baby, I loved it. It a very refreshing and beautiful concept.

You know what? everyone here know that I'm a diehard Lexus fan, let just wait entil next month. That when this "stunning concept" roll into the showroom and hopefully we can get more information on it. Hopefully they will announce if and when are they going to make this baby a reality, and how much it will cost. Then at that time we can debate some more on this high performance concept from Toyota.
And don't forget Toyota are known to make thing that everyone thought is impossible into a Reality. Just like when they launched their Luxuary brand "Lexus" about what 17 or so years ago. Everyone thought it not going to work, but look at Lexus now, it giving the big boy the run for their money.
In my opinion I really truly think Toyota/Lexus is going to make this baby into production really soon. Here my qoute of the day "The Invasion of the Japanese Supercars has Arrived" and they are going kicked some serious Butt. Ah...ha....ha....ah.....ha....

Good point. With the Skyline and NSX on the horizon, Toyota will need a super-car beyond the IS500.
Pricing will depend on what Toyota's plans are. If they want purely bragging rights, then they can accept making no money, or even losing money to put out the best car (think hybrids when they first came out).
I don't think this will be a low priced card though, that kind of performance is aimed directly at the aforementioned competitors. They can leave lower priced performance to the IS.

This concept really look like the up and coming Lexus LF-A in a much more mean, aggressive styling. But it has a Toyota badge, it could just be a "Disguise". I mean look at the Lexus LF-A and look at this concept. If this goes to production it will sales for more than $35k for sure, if Toyota to make money. No want to lose money, everyone wants to make money, money keep your business alived. This baby look like the Lexus LF-A close to it production model.
I definitely belief their two version of this supercar, one with over 400+ hp and one over 500+ hp. We all know how Toyota like to keep thing very secret. It look like to me Toyota/Lexus has another winner in it stable. Like I says before when this baby come out with the price around $40K, I want two for sure.
I really think the invasion of the Japanese "Supercars" start in 2007. With the up and coming NSX with 500+ hp, GTR/Skyline, Lexus IS-F/IS500, rumor GS-F, rumor of the Toyota Supra with a V8 with over 450+ hp, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Honda S2000's replacement the, rumor "XGA" with a V8, and the Lexus LF-A with 500+ hp.

"Wilco" I'm not even going to argue with you, it's pointless (especially in this Lexus blog).
Just think about it though, how bad it would be for the economy (not to mention what it would do to Toyota & Lexus's model line) if Toyota offered everything we shovel out big bucks for, in a 35k package!
Certain guidelines would make it impossible for a car of this magnitude to be released in the modern day market for such a cheap price.

after studying the pics to decide whether i like it or not, here's how i see it:
the rear is an evolution of the "boattail" designs of classic cars, updated. recall designers of the lexus sc visited the french rivera, and looked at yacht designs for styling cues. the C-pillar "baskethandle" is also reminiscent of speedboats, especially with the top down.
the basic body suggests a "tub" as in open wheel race cars. as this is to be a road car with enclosed wheels, a squared off shape envelops the tub and encloses the wheels. it could also be likened to a styled cell phone, with a matching holster.
with these thots in mind, the rear and 3/4 rear views are "acceptable" if not (yet) pretty. it is most certainly DIFFERENT and innovative.
the front on the other hand, could use some additional work. nose is TOO high and boat like. should be lowered and lengthened to again suggest a race car.
of course, if it PERFORMS as described, all styling sins will be forgiven.
