DETROIT AUTO SHOW: IS THE R8 THE WORLD'S SEXIEST DIESEL?
At a press event enlivened by a solo acoustic performance by rock star Bryan Adams, Audi has unveiled a thought-provoking concept car powered by mold-breaking, race-proven diesel technology.

“We are challenging the final piece of conventional wisdom [about diesel engine cars],” said Audi AG Chairman Rupert Stadler. Certainly, he has the right car for the job. The R8 TDI concept’s 6.0-liter V12 twin-turbo engine develops 500 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque. It nails the 0-62 mph sprint in 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of more than 186 mph. And that mountainous torque is available at just 1750 rpm.

Derived from the V10 unit that has twice run the prestigious and demanding Le Mans 24-hour race, the engine is just 6.5 inches longer than the V8 in the regular R8. Its narrow 60-degree angle, and advanced materials combining iron and graphite make it compact and light enough to fit the R8 shell.

How clean is it? Clean enough to meet the ultra-tough California emissions standards that still defeat many lesser diesels. The secret to this is advanced combustion control, involving as many as five fuel injection events per engine cycle, combined with a three-stage exhaust treatment. A standard catalyst and particulate filter are fitted to remove pollutants and soot. An additional catalyst uses small quantities of an additive called AdBlue to break up nitric oxides. This system will last the lifetime of the vehicle.

Fuel economy may not be top of the criteria list for supercar buyers, but the R8 V12 TDI concept scores even here, testing at 24 mpg.

The transmission is a short-throw six-speed manual with a small diameter clutch for quick, precise changes. Naturally for Audi, and necessarily with so much power, there is a Quattro four-wheel-drive system.

The concept’s exterior is a lightly restyled version of the familiar R8. Up front, additional layered air vents sit below the distinctive LED rimmed headlights. The aluminum bodywork is finished in matte silver, contrasting with the “side-blade” that vertically transects the body behind the cabin. The glazed cabin roof and engine cover are two transparent sections separated by a race-derived air duct that accelerates air into the engine. The rear of the car has a variable spoiler that extends upwards.

With the standard R8 already on sale and very well-regarded, it’s entirely possible that this concept could be produced, albeit at low volume. But it’s equally important to Audi as a way of making a point about the potential of diesel engines to deliver economy, cleanliness, and performance.

With a diesel in the R8, "the sky is the limit," said an Audi board member.

Actually compared to any other diesel you could compare it with it is damn sexy. And Wow a V12 with over 500 hp that getts better fuel economy than one un-named V8 Hybrid that only claims about 21mpg...Hmmmm I think Audi has more than made the point for diesel in the US.. That front end is increadible... Like Whoa!!! I need to hit the lotto so I can stand in line...lol

Sexiest Diesel, (IMO) easily.
Though the standard Corvette currently out performs this vehicle in acceleration, as well as MPG, this car is innovative and different. This vehicle is truely exotic.

"Though the standard Corvette currently out performs this vehicle in acceleration"

Nope. Not only is the 4.2 sec quote for 0-100km/h (as opposed to 0-60), but Audi is usually more than half a second off of real-life times. Expect 3.5 sec times being the best for this car... because Audi says 4.6 for the V8 model, but it has gotten 3.9.

Good point, I honestly missed reading the 0-62 vs 60. Also, with that kind of torque, it should be close to scary at higher speeds

the Hennessey viper smokes every thing on the road. 0-200mph in 20.3 sec, but ugly bugatti veyron 24.4 the viper is 5 sec faster than the but ugly from 100-200 in 1/4 mile less distance. I have a 08 viper and a 07 yamaha R1 (9.68 in the 1/4) and the viper (after a 06 z06 is so much faster and doesn't look like someone took a major saw to the rear end. I laugh at lamsters like you when I smoke Mclarens and everything else so far. the only problem with the viper is getting off the line, but after 60mph there is no contest. screw the overhead cams give me a cobra or any car with the old torque of the old and the feel of power. I only have the dodge header , exhaust and converter addition but it still smokes anything here. datsun and tolitota need to not be talked about. if you want the tech crap get a caddy! gerkies

the lambo and lingenfelter vette can't reach 200.

go read the sept 07 R&T, if you can read

Who cares about tuner cars like the Hennessey Viper or souped up Supras, why don't the Viper owners swap in a cummins diesel out of the Dodge Ram pickup truck so they can truely grasp and appreciate what Audi has been able to accomplish with their diesel engines that are also being raced and win quite often. Dodge has a long way to go to be compared to a company like Audi especially since Benz took off.

first- 24.4-20.3 = 4.1, not 5 Seconds.
Second- its Butt ugly, not but, learn how to spell.
third- please dont compare that cheap ass viper to a masterpiece that is the veyron. A corolla has a nicer interior then that POS Viper.

Sailnfl, the Hen, Len and all are all Tuner cars, yes you can screw something together to beat factory cars, but the tuners don't have warranties, and won't last five years, if that. A Factory car is built to last, not to have the last laugh

Sorry the henn/viper has the same warranty (3/36000mile) and optional 7 year FROM DODGE at any dodge dealer and can be purchased at hpe/dodge dealers and taken to any dodge dealer, only problem are techs are at the specialized dealers.www.hennessey performance.com
As for the road race I guessed you don't read much. The stock 2008 viper turned the fastest lap, I'll get the article from the car and driver and the month it was in. What’s with you freaks. You are just like the little kiddies that come up to stop lights with their honda,bmw's- whatever with the trash can exhaust and want to drag me every day, like I'm going to waste my time and gas.
I love the stiff ride its like the old 427 Shelby cobra’s only faster, handles better and much more. Screw the techie interior's that all are the same on all the cars you are talking about. My wife has a 08 A6 and my daughter has a 07 3 series, totally no fun compared to the viper. I won’t tell them though!

Torque makes a huge difference in real driving, especially stop & go. The Germans always use very conservative performance numbers, so they easily blow past the competition with little effort. It’s not the 0-60 that will sell this car, it is the way it drives on short and long drives, driver comfort, usable power, braking, steering, you get the idea. I don’t think buyers of this car really care about 0-60, it is about the big picture, and the lifestyle a car like this captures

They tell me that the Viper is not a comfortable car, that it is very crude, and does one thing best, perform as a true roadster. I like that, it makes me want to own a Viper even more. I like that idea that it is industrial strength and the driver has to toil and work the Wheel & Stick very hard. That is what I find impressive about the Viper, because the car whispers these words to the passenger “you really do need to be a capable & sophisticated driver in order to drive me, that’s just the way it is, remember this and respect me always, and just perhaps you will someday get your chance to drive me” the Viper speaks volumes out its tuned pipes. The R8 is of similar breed. Everyone wants a piece of what these cars deliver, practicable or not.

Only a few changes I would make to the R8:
Replace those Octagonal mesh grills with perforated aluminum like the GMC Yukon Denali, keep the outer finned grills though,
I would put a tiny bit of real rich wood on the instrument panel, in a very understated way. Maybe use cypress or a rare wood.
Aston Martin Leather Seats with a hint of Green color and white piping, or Dark Orange Leather Seating. The black is just too much, Charcoal grey would even be a better choice if a dark color is a must, like Mercury did when they softened their black leather seats with charcoal grey instead, it makes it look like natural slate instead of that shiny black for a more upscale appearance. No, I’m in no way comparing to Mercury, it is just that some color choices make more sense. Why pay 6 figures and look at a black plastic dash all day, when 99.9% of the cheap cars out there have that same shiny black plastic. Oh yea, I had that color dash in my 82 Trans Am as well, how could I forget. A black dash looks great the day you buy the car, one long trip, and you grow tired of it quickly. Performance car or not.

R8 Dash is Leather Covered.
Denali Grill is the most tacky thing i have ever seen.
Wood has no place in a Supercar
Nothing wrong with Black Interior

On the plus side, a black or charcoal interior makes night driving easier, as it absorbs light as opposed to reflecting it, hence less glare.

Sailnfl, you need reading comprehension lessons. I give respect to the factory cars, yes I have a IS300, but in no way am I tuner junkie/addict that thinks a hopped up honda civic is the end all be all. Yes, I read the article, but the Hens/and Lens, have a long way to go before they are truly race capable, like as in AM Lemans. They aren't as refined as some of HKS efforts, they actually make race cars--that work... They ( the Henn/Len) have too many teething problems. What I really want to see Henn do is take that block and engineer it so that it has dual over head cams and 4-5 vlalves per cly. That car would be easily making 830 HP ( being that the new engine is 8.3 liters)

I think if you’re in the market for a 6 figure car, the Aston Martin is the car to have. V10 engine, huge horsepower, tasteful interior with exotic woods and leather, gorgeous body, fit and finish, the list goes on. Passengers getting in ask you “what kind of car is this?” You won’t get that with Audi; still, I have great respect for Audi engineering.

"Passengers getting in ask you “what kind of car is this?” You won’t get that with Audi"

You will with the R8.

In fact, you won't in an Aston, but you will in an R8. Everyone knows what an Aston Martin is by now... but the Audi R8 is the hot new sports car. They WON'T know what kind of car it is, because it's not like Audis they're used to, but they will want to know.

Anyway, some people may have different opinions. I love Astons, but beauty isn't all I want in a sports car. The Maserati GT is the perfect... GT. The Porsche Turbo and Audi R8 are the best performance/comfort combos available. The Ferrari F430 Scu and Porsche 997 GT2/GT3 give you extreme performance... Aston is more of extreme luxury. I would own any of them, of course. I just want to make it clear that an Aston isn't necessarily the "car to have."

I’m not quite sure what is meant by Ford’s transmission woes. I know Ford transmissions to be very reliable in their Rear wheel drive configurations. Every one I have owned has given no trouble, excellent performance, and longevity beyond 100K miles. What many people don’t realize is that you need to change your transmission fluid every 30K miles, auto transmissions like clean fluid and new filters. Therefore, I think manual is perhaps the more durable choice, with less maintenance excluding clutch replacements.

People say they Fords broken down on the side of the road, could this be because there are many more Fords on the road in comparison to Hondas? Therefore the odds and statistics would be staked against Ford. You would need to have an equal amount of both Fords and Hondas on the road, beyond that Ford has many older cars on the road as well. How many older Hondas or Lexuses do you see. If you see a 10 year old Ford broken down, you can judge a brand new Ford on that criterion alone. I always get a kick out of the standard we use for quality these days. If a TV commercial tell us it is true, this is what we come to believe and accept. Fact is, the F150 is the best selling vehicle on the planet for 3 decades and still going, there is reason for this, people love the product.
