With the gas crisis in full swing, it's hard to think of a car that is more anticipated than the next generation Prius, the car that created the hybrid craze.

Toyota will be launching it in Detroit right after the the Big 3 press conferences announcing they are closing their doors (just kidding!).

Do you think they will make another major breakthrough in gas mileage or will this be an evolutionary step for them?

Hate to say it because it's a game changing car.
Design looks cheap. Hope it's better in person.

i think so, with the new dedicated plant for the batteries. the reason why the current prius was out of supply was because they couldnt produce the batteries fast enough. well that should change with this new model.

The title to this thread is "The most antisipated launch inToyota's History" believe it most are not holding their breath waiting for the Prius. A good car for what it does but it's not the second coming.
Toyota is on spot due to the Volt so this is going to be a battle royal IF GM survive.

The Volt program is the only GM program STILL getting funding. GM is moving full steam ahead with the Volt, despite everything else at full stop.

The Volt will happen it is just a matter of time.

GM is has 15 all new units in it's pipline and the volt being one of them. There will be no need to buy a Prius, when first of all when its not a plug, uses old battery tech, and is not warranteed as long as a Volt.

If you think gas is not going to go back up you are as short sighted as your post. Hoping the middle east will always be willing to feed us oil is the worst thing we can do. Close your eyes and put out your hand that is what Americans are good at. The American auto industry needed this wake up call. They have gotten lazy and complacent.

Why is Toyota insistent on this front end look. The no front grille is reminiscent of Saturns and old VW Passats. Totally kills the car. I'm glad I got a 2005 Matrix instead of the 2008.

And if Toyota wants to help, open up a plant in Detroit.

whats very interesting about the grill is that there almost is none. while on the other hybrids (ala RX400h and highlander), they have to open up an extra air intake to cool the batteries. lol

Toyota has enough plants in the US already. Maybe Ford and GM should actually build there cars here in the US instead of Cananda and Mexico....

The big 3 only have a few plants in Mexico and Canada and just GM and Ford alone employ more Americans than all the imports in the country alone, with full time jobs when the imports are known for using Temps for years without hirirng them. At a time like this we should make our purchase not on just what we want but there is a growing need to look at what be and how it effects America and our economy.

I thought everyone knew they were building a plant in Mississippi to build these things. They will be able to keep up with demand after this plant starts production. And as for building one in Detroit. . . Are you kidding?! The locals would be cause a riot!!!

The riot would be all the unemployed RUSHING to fill out applications. Detroit (and Michigan in general) needs jobs. Despite reservations about the plant being from Toyota people WILL line up for any jobs coming to the area.

They are also using a Tundra plant in San Antonio to produce the Prius now that the truck market sucks wind.

so wait... "i can't afford to pay for gas" and then... "i need to buy a new car so i don't use as much gas". how much sense does that make???? if you can't afford the gas for the car you own now, you probably can't afford to buy a new car either. stupid purchases like that are what got the economy into the mess it's in.

Its a good car and its a good step for Toyota but its not doing much new and it will have some stiff competition next time around. GM is not playing around with the Volt, it will be a MAJOR factor. Once its release nears and the marketing hype starts up the Prius will have serious dogfight on its hands. I'm actually curious as to which one comes out on top.

Although it borrows the same silhouette, the 2010 Honda Insight Concept is far more aesthetically appealing. The Honda will also undercut the Prius by a few grand. We'll have to wait to see how they'll compare performance-wise.

Ugh, I am still not sold on the shiteous armadillo look. Why does Toyota have to make all their cars (with the exception of the camry) look ill proportioned unless they have fat tires?
