Daimler sees possible future collaboration with Jaguar and Land Rover
In a recent interview with Auto Motor und Sport, Daimler head Dietre Zetsche said he sees a possible future collaboration with Tata Motors on its newly purchased Jaguar and Land Rover brands. Daimler own a 7 percent stake in the Indian company.

“If Ratan Tata and Daimler would address the terms of components to be delivered, we would be open to discussions,” said Zetsche.

I would rather see Daimler working with Lexus. They could learn a lot from Lexus such as quality, reliability, engine refinement, friendly service and top safety systems.

Just a thought.

In the last few years Lexus has lost pretty much every comparison to a European car in the major car magazines. Here are just a couple of examples:

Car and Driver

Fifth Place: 2007 Lexus LS460L
Fourth Place: 2006 Jaguar Super V-8
Third Place: 2006 BMW 750Li
Second Place: 2006 Audi A8L Quattro
First Place: 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550

Motor Trend

1st place: Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT
Lights up the brain's pleasure centers like no other sedan we know.

2nd place: Mercedes-Benz S550
Pushes the lux sedan envelope in all the right directions.

3rd place: Jaguar Super V8
Disguises modern technology and dynamics in authentic 19th-century elegance.

4th place: Lexus LS 600hL
Overpromises and underdelivers on performance, fuel economy, and even luxury.

Lexus has no reason to work w/ Daimler....they aren't having financial problems.

I think the biggest gainers out of this would be Tata. They need anything they can get from MB or Jag/Land Rover to improve and soon would want to become world class. Lucky.

Wait...so Daimler owns 7% of Tata which owns Land Rover and Jag wholly - Mercedes technically now owns a bit of Jaguar and Land Rover. Eeek.

That would be interesting, but aren't they, kind of, direct competitors?

they are not direct competitors.

the combined lineup of Land rover and Jaguar is less than half of daimler's.

Daimler will return to its glory now that it dropped the excess baggage(Chrysler)

the only decent jaguar is the new XF and XK. the XJ and X-type are too old and are no where near the luxury, prestige or performance of any daimler cars. Which is a shame because the XJ is a really gorgeous car.

As far as SUV's the ML550 outperforms both the range rover supercharged and sport supercharged for a fraction of the cost.

There is no direct competitor to daimler because no one can match their lineup from $30,000 entry level to $600,000 super car.

MichaelTaylor, Japanese engineers have excellent skills in electronics while the Germans have always been the best mechanical engineers. There is potential for synergy here but I predict that GM will bounce back and rule the automotive world in 10 or 15 years.
