Daimler won't sell Maybach luxury brand
Remember Maybach? Yeah, that uber-luxury Mercedes-Benz brand that sells only 2 cars based on the S-Class. Earlier this year, Daimler was considering selling the brand after it sold only 146 cars last year. According to Automotive News, the brand that is supposed to compete with the Bentleys and the Rolls-Royces is going to stick around.
Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler, says that Daimler won’t kill Maybach because it is not losing money.
A handful of 62S Landaulet, a ‘convertible’ Maybach will go on sale in December with prices starting at...

I think I'd choose a regular S-Class over this.

This car is clearly for a niche market. If you've ever seen one in person you know it's not as flashy as a RR Phantom but the interior is where it pampers. I sat in one briefly at a local car show and all I have to say is WOW.

They need to sell this brand to someone who's passionate about the badge, Daimler could take these cars so much further.

Of course, the Maybach lack of differentiation from the S-class is why their sales are so low. If BMW put a RR grill on the 7-series and sold it as the Phantom, would they think the RR brand would be doing as well as it has? Probably not.
M-B needs to seriously review the Maybach brand and determine if the really want it continue on as a "personalized luxury package" to the S-class model line. Maybach can be great, but more design and imagination needs to be executed to really compete with RR, Bentley, etc.

The interior IMO is executed very well and may even be superior to Bentley and RR in comfort, space, and quietness (from my experience sitting inside one at a car show vs. sitting inside a Bentley GT on the road. However like you said Maybach can be great. I think they should just step away from being the ultra luxurious yet ultra exclusive company to being a more mainstream (if you will) brand like Bentley.
They need to sell more cars to get more recognition. Everyone knows Bentley or RR but the average joe may not know Maybach, only the celebrities who can afford one.

If there ever was an irrelevant -- and uninteresting -- car built, the Maybach is certainly it.

Beautiful car. Too me, It's lost a little luster since I see them all of the time in Atlanta.
