Decision on Hyundai Lexus-rival coming in 3-4 years
Hyundai, together with Kia, is the sixth biggest carmaker in the world in terms of sales but the company sees its future as being in the top five band of carmakers.

To boost sales and market share, Hyundai is developing more premium models such as the new Genesis sedan and coupe but what executives really hope to accomplish is the launch of a full-line dedicated luxury brand like what Toyota did with Lexus.

Executives are in no major rush, and are in fact taking a wait and see approach with the launch of the new Genesis range.

I wonder how likely it is that they could gain more ground than Lincoln and Chrysler are so desparately trying to recover?

i dont know about this.

hyundai is entering the market kinda late...and into an economy that is far from prosperous at the moment. it could all just be bad timing.

if anybody has ready the "lexus story", the book about the entire brand, you would know that lexus rose in a time when german reliability was at its worse in the 90s. thats why so many people bought japanese.

but flash forward to 2008, the Germans are "no" longer unreliable, lexus is as strong as ever, and not infiniti is catching up.

the question is, is there room for hyundai

"During a recent interview, Hyundai vice chairman Dong-Jin Kim said a Lexus-style brand is still too costly. "

of course that there isn`t any room for korean equivalent of lexus . who would wan`t the same only with different nameplate and details . only chance for them is to do something new , not the same becouse:
german car are see as performance cars
japanese as quality and reliability cars
and korean cars as budget cars
thay can`t (generally) do cars to compete with lexus on quality or with germans on performance . they should first do their own image .

Everyone wants to got premium by slapping on leather and bigger rims. That doesn't make you premium. Not all cars can be premium. Too many volume brands trying to become premium. Won't work.
