Deport it - Import it: Can we have the 43 mpg Volkswagen Polo?
Japanese auto makers seem to have taken over the sub-compact market in the US. Toyota has the Yaris; Honda has the Fit; and Nissan has the Versa. So why aren’t German auto makers answering the call? We’re going to ask the largest German auto maker, Volkswagen, to step up to the challenge.

While we don’t have any Volkswagen models (we’d never give up the Golf) in the US that we would trade with the European market, we would definitely love the idea of seeing the Volkswagen Polo in US dealerships. We think the Volkswagen Polo would kick some serious Japanese butt in the US. Why?...

Why not a 47 US MPG Golf instead? Or the 60.2 US MPG Polo BlueMotion?! Or a 41,7 US MPG Passat for that matter...

Funny, www.toyota.co.uk seems to think their diesel Yaris' get 62mpg combined and the gas one 52mpg (47mpg for the bigger gas one). From what I can tell, VW's diesels are the same, their gas ones vary.

This guy trying to pull a fast one?

Why do you have to bring up Toyota in EVERY ARTICLE? Can't you just vote for the Polo and shut up?

BTW: That is 51.6 and 43.3 US MPG if anyone is wondering... What a pathetic attempt to glorify an inferior car! The germans are the kings of diesels and the Yaris diesel engine is a Peugeot engine anyway... Another french Toyota?! EMBARRASING!

62 is worse than the Mini Cooper D, which gets 64 and does 0-62 in 9.8 seconds.

As long as it can pass the more restricted Diesel requirements in the US then it should be a 'GO'! I truly hope Diesels become more popular as well as diesel hybrids.

I know... I don't have anything against french diesel engines, but I know that huuey hates the French with a vengance and he loves Toyota... So I'm just teasing him...

Actually, the diesel engine in the Mini is the EXACT same diesel as the one in the Yaris and the Aygo if I'm not mistaken!

It's not the same, in the Yaris it's a 1.4 and in the Mini it's a 1.6.
It is the same as the one in the Peugeot 207 however.

Ohh sorry... I thought it was the same engine as the one in the 2003 Mini One D... My bad... Because that is the same engine as the one in the Yaris and Aygo!

Sailor,
Would you like to show me what I'm not seeing? www.toyota.co.uk, www.vw.co.uk
The gas versions and diesel versions of each car stack up comparably to one another, no 10mpg gap.

This guy is trying to fudge the numbers somewhere. I think he's compaing UK vs US mpg, or a diesel vs gas.

The only dumb one would be you Sailor. I get around the mpg thing by using L/km. Polo E1.2 is 5.8L/100km, Yaris 1.3L is 6L/100km.

You probably just can't stand that a German purposely tried to deceive everyone.

Rupert,
Blame the French. Smart ppl would just buy the Prius which uses 4.9L/100km. Compared to a Polo, the Prius is an SUV.

Sailor,
Toyota probably felt sorry for the French so they let them in on a joint venture. The diesel engine is the only thing from Peugeot.
http://www.channel4.com/4car/feature/feature.jsp?id=506

So basically the French are so inept that they need Toyota to build a car for them.

Well... I think we are forgetting that the car was designed entirely by Peugeot, but then they sold the three door version to Toyota in order to avoid having to use the money to set up a new completely new production facility. And you also seem to forget that without PSA, Toyota would have to set up a partnership with a parts manufacturer which can prove pretty expensive... Instead, Peugeot buy all the parts through their established network making the parts cheaper...

Well... That is easy, the UK site doesn't have the BlueMotion model... But had you googled it, you'd find this (Bear in mind that those numbers are IMP, but it ads up to 62 US MPG):

http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/02/09/pictures-of-the-polo-bluemotion-going-to-rock-the-uk-with-72-4-m/

And what was that?! 102 g/km... Now what does that mean?

Yes Sailor, we already knew a few months ago that the Bluemotion was a little cleaner than the Prius.
Problem is the Prius 3 is on the way, and has roughly the same release date as Bluemotion (we'll probably only get the Jetta/Rabbit).

Bluetec/Bluemotion has nothing to do with mileage, it's about hiding emissions and nothing more. You ever wonder why the E320 Bluetec has basically the same mileage as the old CDI one?

Are you kidding me? Did you even read my link?

Toyota could've just as easily teamed up with Renault. The Campus is a pretty rotten looking little car, assuming that's Renault's market offering.

You should do some proper research... BlueMotion and BlueTec isn't the same thing at all... The Polo BlueMotion is only equipped with PM-filters...

And how can converting dangerous substances into harmless ones be called hiding emmisions?!

And I really can't wait to see that fantastic Prius you keep talking about but only you seem to know anything about!

Maybe you guys are different, but everyone else usually replaces their cars with a better one.

Bluetec uses filters does it not? And it's already been reported (when Bluemotion was announced) that it is not the same as Bluetec so don't go thinking you're telling me something I don't already. I lump them together because they're the "next generation" of diesels. Just like there are 2 levels of hybrid, there are 2 levels of clean diesel (maybe 3 if you include CDI).

Don't pretend you haven't seen the links that myself and other users have posted. Ignorance may be bliss, but it doesn't change the facts.

Volkswagon uses their own exhaust-treatement systems; it not the same as BlueTec, but the two companies are sharing the "Blue" name.

The VW Polo BlueMotion will get better real world mpg than any current U.S. car on the market. Additonally, the Polo BlueMotion will, like all other diesels, accept any blend of biodiesel without loss in fuel economy or performance.

Whether or not there will be some kind of Prius 3 to challenge diesel technologies is irrelevant, since diesels are still more alternative-fuel capable and more fuel effient than gas engine vehicles. That fact makes them a viable technology and a viable choice for consumers. That is all that really matters. Every diesel doesn't have to stand up against every hybrid every time, for someone to feel good about buying one. We have two technologies that improve fuel economy; reduce carbon emissions; and reduce petroleum consumption. In fact, with a diesel, one needs only some petroleum-fuel blend in the winter, and can go petroleum-free in the Summer. Plug-in hybrids will have the disadvantage in that they will require more electrical energy from our utilities, but--then again--none of these solutions are perfect.
