Details on the Toyota-Subaru RWD sports car
Toyota and Subaru have both confirmed that they are indeed working on a rear-wheel-drive sports car that will arrive on the market by the end of 2011. Toyota will be handling the basic design of the car while Subaru will provide the technicals.

InsideLine has some new info on the sports car and has learned that it will be sold as a Toyota model exclusively in Japan while the rest of the world will get it with a Subaru badge. Mechanicals on both cars will be ‘identical’, but both models will have different exterior looks.

Engineers are working on Subaru’s 4WD powertrain and are modifying it to create a new rear-wheel-drive architecture. Power will come...

I *really* do hope this car is successful! The initial packaging sounds great: under 20K, 220 HP, and RWD. My fingers are crossed for Subaru to eventually offer a range of choices, perhaps one with AWD, and the top end being an RWD STI-powered variant?

"Power will come from Impreza WRX STI’s 2.0 liter engine that produces 220-hp" why only 220?

Non turbo IIRC

Keep in mind, in the states, the STI motor is a 2.5 liter. For 2004 and 2005, this same 2.5 STI motor was used in the Forester Turbo, detuned of course and power was rated at 210hp. A de-tuned 2.0 turbo motor could be rated at 200hp. This would be great for tuners, in fact.

So this engine is going to be a non turbo? If yes it will probably mimic a Honda S2000 in characteristics.

Do you even know what they have done together so far? It makes sense, combining the best of both companies.

no 43LE, I think hes right, combining forces together will make such a "recipe for failure".

The old Celica All-Trac was nice back in the day.

They are making a mistake not selling it as a Toyota in the states. Subaru does not need another car. What's this gonna be a new name, or the WRX Sport or maybe Legacy Coupe?

Why not just bring it back as a Toyota, sell it as the new Celica and call the 4WD All Trac again. They would sell tons of them.

You've got a point. What's wrong with the STi? Could it possibly be that although it has the guts the general consensus is still that it doesn't look the part of a sexy beast of a sports car? Besides if it's not going to be AWD, a Subaru hallmark, why not make it a Toyota who has long needed a RWD sports coupe.
Would it make much sense if VW/Audi decided to produce a new minibus and slapped a raging bull emblem on it and said "here Lamborghini, sell this!"
Let's wait and see.....

The Celica GTS has 180hp without a turbo, 220 n.a. is more efficient.

The above car looks like an RSX with LF-A headlights.

If they keep it under $30,000 Canadian, it'll be a hit with tuners and the younger crowd who want stand apart from know-nothing yuppies.

Yes...which we should all say "Thank you" for re-creating a segment that has been missing for many years.

Thank you Hyundai...you just forced the japanese to step up and get back into the "Datsun Z" game

WE ALL WIN!

Cars that need to come back into the game:

-Celica
-RSX
-Probe (maybe not the same name but something similar for people who want a nice coupe but not a Focus or Mustang)

Think of the success the companies and companies coming out with these cars have had:
-Nissan Z
-Altima Coupe
-Hyundai's Tiburon upcoming
-Hyundai's Genesis Coupe
-Kia's upcoming Civic Si fighter.

I mixed the segments a little I know, but the coupes are gaining momentum and the other guys need to catch up. No more dominance by the Z, and the Si vs. GTI fight is soon coming to a battlefield. The Sentra SE-R I left out cause it is boring, way too angular and in need of a desperate boost in power and looks.

Spectator,
Did we forget the Civic Si which hasn't gone anywhere? The RSX/Integra, Celica, j-bodies, GTI etc ran this segment before Hyundai even knew it existed.

The Tiburon is just a poorly done copy of the Supra.

Whelan,
I think you can toss in the Cobalt SS in there, it's got power, decent looks and a relatively low price.
