Detroit Auto Show: Acura to go diesel in 2009
Honda announced yesterday that Acura will be offering a i-DTEC clean diesel engine in the North American market in 2009. The i-DTEC engine reduces harmful noxious exhaust emissions while boosting power and fuel efficiency. Now all Acura needs is a hot car to the i-DTEC in.

The Honda i-DTEC engine meets the ultra-strict U.S. EPA Tier II Bin 5 emission standards without on-board storage of urea.

Honda has also been planning to go diesel for almost 6 months (?) and will release an accord and pilot diesel in 09, and if possible, a odyessy diesel.

Diesel Hybrid, now there's a word, I couldn't agree more. This makes much more sense. This is the same propulsion that Diesel locomotives use.

Now if we can just leave the motor running without the crazy start/stop feature, perhaps we won’t have to spend a ton of money on replacing starters. How about that crazy Chrysler engine that turns some of the spark plugs off to save fuel, Cadillac tried that in the eighties and people were stuck with junk engines, what happens when the car gets old, and the electrical system degrades, will everything still keep working, or do you call a tow truck?

A diesel Pilot/MDX I can see, but for the passenger cars, it's pointless. Won't sell in North America (VW can't even do it) and everyone knows the FCX is on the way in about 5 years, why get stuck with some dinosaur diesel.

TierIIBin5? Can't anyone make a diesel that's SULEV?Atleast it doesnt' require pee.

The only saving grace is that Honda already makes diesels, so it won't cost them much to bring them here.

I guess Audi is really what Acura wants to be, huh?

Good move. BMW, Merc and Audi will be touting their diesels all over the place, so Acura will be able to have in on the fun before Lexus or Infiniti get a chance.

Audi is not a big thing for Acura to surpass, here in America they basically have the same status as tryiing to find an identity. As far as the brands diesels you mentioned there's one problem they are struggling to stay 50 state legal which Honda has already accomplished.

why get stuck with some dinosaur diesel?

1.) Because Diesels offer extreme reliability, this is why ships use Diesel.
2.) Efficiency, 30-50 MPG Range
3.) Towing capacity, anyone try towing with a hybrid lately?
4.) Less Maintenance- No Spark Plugs, just change the fuel filters and go.
5.) Low end torque for snappy city driving.

Here in the North East US, electric cars don’t work well, because the salty roads corrodes electrical systems. Electric repairs tend to be very expensive and elusive to troubleshoot. Of course no one wants to admit it, but realistically speaking, the repair costs far outweigh the cost of gas on electric hybrid vehicles. However, this is usually not part of the average person’s purchasing criteria since most cars are purchased on impulse decisions.

Anyone notice that the ideas from BMW and Mercedes seem to stand the test of time?

Mercedes has been offering Diesel sedans for years. Now the big 3 and the Japanese come in with crazy technology to squeeze out a few more mile per gallon with the use of electronics and batteries. Chrysler with its V8 that shuts cylinders down, a dreadful idea Cadillac tried years ago which failed miserably. Cadillac had to quickly sweep that idea under the rug to preserve the Cadillac nameplate.

Nothing radical from the Germans, just good sturdy engineering that simply works well.

Now if only the Big 3 would see the light and start building long overdue Diesels and build cars people want instead of what the marketing companies think the people want.

Or how about, Acura has nothing to lose because they're struggling? The only way to be a player is (for them) to start fresh. We need new designers, new engineers, new accountants... NOW.

mercuryguy,
The new diesels can only match regular gasoline engines in emissions.
Prius 46mpg and uses 1/2 the oil per year compared to a TDI, and it's SULEV-II (just a tad cleaner than Tier2Bin5).

I guess Jetta TDI's were built for towing?
Interesting E320 Bluetec fact.

Tow Capacity (Standard): Towing Not Recommended
Tow Capacity (Maximum): Towing Not Recommended

What's that 400ft.lbs of diesel torque for then? They should atleast list 1000lbs (I've even seen a Civic tow a 17ft boat before). The chassis is made out of spaghetti?

You probably haven't heard about the X6 hybrid and the S-hybrid and the Touerag hybrid?

Honda will stick with hybrids in their small cars (the V6 Accord hybrid didn't make sense, should've been a I4). The TXS/TL diesel will be used mainly to take customers away from an overpriced Bluetec, or in VW's case, an overpriced Bluemotion Jetta. You think Honda will abandon hybrids considering they have 3 more coming out?
