Did BMW steal Dodge's 2003 Avenger Concept design?
The design thesis of the 2003 Dodge Avenger concept was to merge European rally car performance and style with some of the convenience and capability of a sport-utility vehicle. The Dodge Avenger Concept delivers all-wheel-drive capability wrapped in a contemporary, versatile package that real people can use everyday. Does this sound like the new BMW X6?

lol this article is funny, when the avenger was released it was criticized as nothing new, just another dodge concept. In "concept" form you coul make a long list dating back to the early 2000's with cars that have the same "concept" as the BMW X6. ranging from mitsubishi, to lincoln. I think the dodge is a far cry from being inspiration. THe point is many if not almost every manufacturer as done an X6 car in concept, but BMW is the first to production. As far as the amc eagle it was a raised station wagon....it much more is like the Audi all road, and subaru outback in concept "raised station wagons literally, than the X6 an X5 with a sloping roof

There is no doubt that the Dodge Avenger concept could have been the inspiration for the X6, although Chrysler had their chance and didn't produce it. Neither did any other car maker. Give BMW the credit for having the guts to come out with this new category of vehicle. Will it be a success? At first I didn't give it a chance, but now I'm not so sure. If you ever wanted an SUV/sedan - folks, this is your chance!

Doesn't Subaru pretty much already do an SUV/sedan?

They did until 2007, then discontinued it. It didn't sell well. No one takes these things off-road, so the Legacy sedan with the same AWD and better MPG and handling is the more practical choice (though the Outback sedan looks cooler). IMO, this is why so many cool concepts get watered down before mainstream introduction.

Personally...

I think that the Dodge Concept has a much better proportioned profile than the BMW X6.

I'm really not liking that the 'apex' of the roof on the X6 is pushed so far forward, an issue that I also have with the Nissan 350Z when viewed from the side...

It Lacks Grace and Looks Terribly Awkward.

The design is called "FASTBACK".

Notice the rear Headrests in the X6 is Lower than the front pair ?
I think that is because the rear seats are also lower in the vehicle.

I stated this 'lower rear seat cushion' probability quite some time ago... In other threads.

Though that does not change 'My Opinion' that the side profile looks very askew.

If Your Opinion differs... So Be It.

It is funny how these two cars look alike, and yet its so sad also to see that the same idea the differences the designers came up with. Beautiful design from BMW (Even if I'm not crazy about the design idea) and unbelievably ugly and tastless design by Dodge. My question is, what's wrong with the American designers that they're horrible this bad?

BMW is headed up by an American designer. I have no idea if Dodge actually has designers on board. The two cars look strikingly similar though.

When I first saw the Avenger concept, I thought it was hideous. That was until I saw what they eventually came out with, which was far worse. Credit Daimler control with many disappointments and the downfall of Chrysler. They were on a roll until the Germans took over...

Agreed...

But only from a 'design' perspective.

Chrysler exterior designs from the 1990's were (arguably) some of the most appealing of the decade, but those that followed (with the exception of the PT Cruiser and LX-Series)) have been tragic.

What an idiotic post. I am sure a first tier auto manufacturer like BMW is going to waste their in house design talent and copy designs from a third rate producer. Get a grip guys, or is this just about being haters?

There are buyers who like a higher drivers position but don't necessarily like driving a block shaped SUV. I think this auto will have its appeal to those buyers.(Not to mention great driving dynamics and a great engine)
I also think that the scale of this auto is much larger than most realize - IMO it will look great in the flesh.

not a suv i would consider, but not boring. how many designs can nissan use off of g platform. maxima/altima(coupe & sedan)/g37/m35 these proportions too similiar. cost effective but getting dull.

YEAH, THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF CONFUSION. BUT ONLY ONE IS BEING PRODUCED. THE MARKET WILL TELL WHO WAS CORRECT, BMW OR DODGE. BY THE WAY, WOULD YOU RATHER OWN A BMW OR DODGE DEALERSHIP? THERE IS YOUR ANSWER.

Assuming the dealers are in the same town, I would rather have the Dodge dealership. More volume, more profit.
