Diesel Toyota Tundra Likely in 2009
Evidence is mounting that Toyota and Isuzu are collaborating to develop a diesel engine for the Tundra as soon as possible. Recent announcements indicate Toyota can economically produce a diesel variant of the Tundra at sales volumes as low as 40k units a year, making production a near certainty.

If Toyota sources engine components from current designs, they could have a viable production engine in as little as two (2) years.

Toyota has always believed the diesel technology, to them it was only a matter when they will come out with one. Not surprise if they start offering Hybrid-Diesel in other models around the same time in other models both Toyota/Lexus. What people don't realize in this forum, is how other fanboys mention that diesel is much better than Hybrid tech and can work more efficent in other ways than Hybrid. But yet again Toyota does now own a major share into Isuzu which they are one of the major leaders in the diesel technology segment...they are totally underated...Like I said before it's only a matter of time!!!

One can only hope that reliability issues won't continue to haunt the latest Tundra when the new engines surface...

Don't know if this will save the Tundra project. Isuzu has been building these engines forever, they had never been a serious competitor for the mainstream brands.

Well I have followed the progress of both Mr. Isuzu and Mr. Toyota for many years now, and I can say... without hesitation

Mr. Isuzu, Your Are NO Mr. Toyota!

"...save the Tundra project."

????

what about it NEEDS "saving?" the tundra has been a spectacular success so far! all the domestic competition is DOWN on ytd sales, but the tundra has a double digit percentage increase.

It's easy to have a double-digit percent increase when your truck didn't sell well in the first place.

GM and Isuzu have a joint venture currently for the Duramax diesel. Will GM eventually utilize a different diesel?

Toyota diesels are GARBAGE.

Just look at how the Lexus IS Diesel stacks against the rest and then tell me it doesnt.

The new V8 Landcruiser diesel is apparently pretty good. I agree about the IS220d though from what I've read (European reviews). Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think the IS220d engine comes from the Toyota Avensis, right?

The new LC diesel is ok, low on power compared to the Audi and Merc 4.2 diesels but it is good on the MPG front.

Yes, you're right, its the same 2.2 litre unit fitted to the Avensis.

And the Corolla, and the Corolla Verso...but it's bumped on power and down on refinement.

Wait, what about a hybrid, isn't hybrid technology better than diesel.

Duramax is no longer in a partnership between GM and Isuzu. According to Diesel Power Magazine, GM bought out Isuzu interest in D-Max Division a few years ago. Toyota and Isuzu, however, have been partnered up to look at diesels and diesel hybrids for European and U.S. markets. This partnership was announced about eight months ago.

...and, Toyota does trail nearly all other automakers with respect to clean diesel technologies. Their products in Europe are inferior to other brands, even other Asian brands like Nissan and Hyundai. Their need to partner up with a company that specializes in diesel tech. illustrates their weaknesses in this arena.

...and, it is an illogical statement to state "isn't hybrid better than diesel?" Hybrid technology is an add-on technology to the internal combustion engine and can be used with diesels or spark-ignition engine technologies. Diesel is a different type of internal combustion altogether and uses less fuel than gas-powered engines. Adding electric motor propulsion to either type of engine will improve fuel economy, but a diesel will still maintain a 30% advantage, on average.

greg,
Diesels needs more oil to make than gasoline, so there's a zero-sum gain whether you use gas or diesel.
The Tundra is meant for pulling and work, of course a diesel would make sense. Makes more sense than putting it in an E320 and bragging about how much torque it has, eventhough the chassis will never even come close to handling it all.

Well said though, hybrid-tech can be used with anything, including Honda's new FCX hydrogen car. I don't hear anyone from Germany talking about making a hybrid hydrogen-diesel.
Of course, the geniuses at BMW decided to make a hydrogen-gas hybrid. Twice the weight, 1/2 the mileage, same pollution, but it's a BMW.

I'm sure Toyota knows there's no point in chasing diesel engines further (beyond work applications) since hydrogen is within sight now.

Again huu76, you continue to make this claim, which is not only untrue but, in reality, quite the opposite. I looked up your link but it brought me to a page about hydrogen power, however, I have read your posted links before and the math is absurd and the anti-diesel activists use logic based on data from research labs; not the real world.

Using your logic, it would take 50% more oil to make a barrel of diesel as gasoline, when in reality, it takes only about 5% more crude to produce diesel fuel. But an added advantage to diesel (diesel engine not diesel fuel) is that one can fill up with three different choices of alternative, renewable fuels and still maintain the 30% better fuel economy as comparable gas cars, whereas gas-power proponents can fill up with ethanol blends above 10% only when the car is specifically designed to accept blends above 10%. Then, if one does buy a flex-fuel gasser, he or she then will lose up to 30% fuel economy running E85 (source: www.fueleconomy.gov and then go to FFVs; average fuel economy loss is 27% on the hwy by examining individual models for sale; adding and then dividing).

My Jetta TDI gets me 44 mpg, commuting (85% hwy running exclusively on 20% biodiesel). The gas version of the same car is estimated @ 28 mpg (85% hwy driving). This gives the diesel a 57% fuel economy advantage over the same car with a gas motor in hwy driving; realworld. Moreover, the gas-powered car can use a maximum of 10% ethanol, which will decrease fuel economy another 30%X10% (28 mpg - .84 mpg = 27.16 mpg) whereas, I can run 100% biodiesel and still maintain 93 to 95 percent of my fuel economy (44 X .94 = 41.36= zero petroleum usage and still achieving great fuel economy / source: www.biodiesel.org and then go to manufacturer statements. And then look for Cummins statement wherein their research has shown that 100% biodiesel will decrease fuel economy between five and seven percent on the average Cummins engine in average RPM cycles).

An extensive study done by the EPA concludes that America could save 1.4 million barrels of oil per day if 1/3 of our light-duty fleet were diesel powered. This amount of crude is equal to our current importation of crude from Saudi Arabia. Moreover, it has been estimated by the DoE that with only a 5% blend of biodiesel into our current diesel fuel stocks, this action could save us about the same amount of crude as is currently imported from Iraq. The slight amount of extra crude needed to produce a barrel of diesel fuel as compared to a barrel of gasoline hardly contains enough negative impact to even begin to offset this advantage. Moreover, the amount of energy needed to produce a barrel of gasoline exceeds that as is needed for a barrel of diesel, so the total petroleum used, as a lifecycle basis, is about equal. Thus your claim is totally invalid!

And yes, there is work being done on diesel hybrids. Peugeot already has a mid-size sedan, diesel hybrid that achieves over
