Diesel will take over the U.S.A.?
Diesels We Want but Can't Get
In Europe, more than half of all vehicles are diesel-powered and offer 30% better fuel economy. Why can't the U.S. follow its example?

Diesel reminds me of the whining cavemen on the Geico Car insurance commercial for some odd reason.

diesel stench is a known carcinogen...why the hell would anyone buy one?

sorry, unless they take the stench out of diesel, I'll never EVER buy one. I was hoping with the ultra low sulfur fuel is would help....but it didn't make one bit of difference...either that or everyone is running "OFFROAD DIESEL"

leave this crap for the Ford F250's and move on!

diesels don't smell anymore, and particulate traps stop smoke and particles coming out the exhaust. Modern ones are greatly improved over something in a Ford truck. V8 diesels now sound more like V8s than diesels, and some, like the A8 4.2 tdi, are amazing engines, and quicker than the petrol alternative.

Obviously Bagwell you haven't been to Europe, or at least recently. Diesel smell has been almost eradicated from the passenger car. You are thinking of American big diesel trucks and rigs... not in the same catergory man!

For me there is only one negative to a diesel auto:
If I step on some spilled fuel at a pump and get in my car, it smells to high heaven. I guess I could bring large sheets of construction paper to stand on while I'm filling up.

correct, I'm basing everything on US (Houston, TX)where it seems like every other vehicle is a diesel pickup truck (not counting 18 wheelers).

Maybe once a week I'll see a Jetta TDI and I notice the bumper is black from the soot/exhaust.

E320 BlueTec (with the "urine") looks promising, tho still not CA emissions legal!!!!

altho on second thought ---- hell if they can make a Hybrid diesel that gets 100mpg, I'll take two!

wait, I'm in the US, it'll never happen unless Toyota comes to our rescue - Ford/GM etc are too busy making gas guzzlers that nobdy wants or needs!

You forgot to mention that the EU subsidizes diesel by taxing gasoline at 2x the rate. An inconvenient truth.

Here's a nice article, the print version had a table that showed total energy required for production (including the oil itself) and gasoline, although refined more, takes less energy overall to make than real diesel.
http://www.motortrend.com/features/consumer/112_0705_alt_fuels_web_extra/

Diesel will only sell in Europe as long as VW keeps the bribe cheques coming. The rest of the world is more enlightened, we realize we need to use "LESS" oil, not more.

No, the EU taxes fuel on Co2 content. But not in Britain, where diesel is about 3-4 pence more.

You'll notice the Camry hybrid easily outmileages the Bluetec E320, and although not on the list, the GS450h comes close in mileage but runs circles around the E in peroformance.

The print version had a very interesting interview with James Woolsey and he states hybrid technology is currently the best answer to lifting our oil dependence.

better answer than heavily taxing gasoline?

Rupert,
As I've said numerous times, I don't consider the UK a real part of Europe, plus they're the most sensible people over there.

No disrespect to you intended.

well I'm sure the people of Britain who read the Daily Mail and Express are honoured that you don't consider them part of the EU.
And you, you internationally travelled person who knows so much about Europe, you say that British people are the most sensible? What kind of moronic statement is that?
The majority of British people have adopted American values and have become fat, stupid and complain far too much.

Anyway, here's a list I've posted before. You'll see all the petro taxes are significantly higher than diesel. (except the UK of course)

Rupert,
Really, I figurd their flacid response during the Iranian crisis was a typically European one. Complaining seems more to be a European trait.
North Americans are do-ers, not complainers. Good for the UK for adapting to what's best.

But let's get back onto the subject of why diesel only sells in Europe. Yes, because the automakers find it more profitable to charge diesel premiums, what better way than to make gasoline artifically less attractive.

Diesels are quicker because they have Turbo's.
If you put a turbo on a gasoline engine with the same cc it would drive circles around the diesel.

And don't hope for it to come
I live in europe and we'll talk again when all those "tuner-boys" think they can put a blow-off-valve on their seat leon TDI, which leaves you with a blow of dirt coming out on your frontwindow at the trafficlights!!

Basicly as long as people still have relative lower prices for fossil fuels and will continue driving those Support Usama Vehicles (SUV)for one passenger only and above all the bragging rights fo fellow associates on their new toi, I see no real headway for diesels until something changes like very high prices for fossil fuels.
