Do You Agree? Clarkson Declares The Chysler Sebring As The Worst Car In The World.

Many people imagine when they rent a convertible in America that they’ll be thumping down Highway 1 under a blazing sky in a throbbing Corvette or an evocative Mustang. Yum yum, they think. Freedom. Sunshine. A V8 bass line. Engineer boots, leather jackets and tight blue jeans. The American dream.

Sadly, however, most tourists end up with a Chrysler Sebring convertible, which is almost certainly the worst car in the entire world.

My journey in this automotive horror story began in Wendover. Famous for being a base used by the Enola Gay back in 1945, it lies on the border between Utah and Nevada. So half the town is full of man mountains emptying what’s left of their savings into MGM’s shiny and very noisy slots. And the other half is full of Donny Osmond. As you can imagine, I was in a hurry to leave and so I piled, along with my Top Gear colleagues, into the rented Sebring and set off for Denver.

If it is ANYTHING remotely similar to the Jeep Compass I have in Maui a few months ago. I would have to agree. That car was pitiful in almost every way.

Well it's not like he set out to review the Sebring. He just wanted to rent a convertible for the drive. He HAD to review it b/c it was so freaking BAD. I don't fault him for not giving it the full monty review or letting the Stig thrash it around the track.

The Sebring may suck, but Jezza can suck it. It's all part of his routine -- he craps on America for almost everything. I'm not going to say it's not funny, but sometimes the crap gets a little thick.

You're forgetting when he spent half a series of Top Gear a few years ago begging Ford to let him have one of the few GT40's imported to the UK. Just accept that he is not bashing America for the sake of it, but just making humor at the expense of a truly terrible car.

He is the only credible journalist period! A buddy of mine was an editor of a major car magazine and they never dare bash anything too much for fear of loosing endorsements from the auto companies! Jeromy says it like he sees it. Maybe if you disagree with Jeromy and enjoy the sebring's stopping ability don't listen to him! Ignorance is blitz and much cheaper.lol

"Credible?" Everyone knows Clarkson's a bag of gas. And since the companies that advertise on Top Gear and in the magazine are British and European, they already know what they're getting into. Oh, wait, he doesn't bash the Euros like he does the Americans.
Look, bashing the USA is a favorite pastime of many Brits and Euros. Who cares? It's just what they do. Anyway, when Russia tries to get some of that Euro ass in about 10 years, who's going to save them (again)? The U S of A.

Doesn't bash the Euros? Have you heard his comments about BMW and Porsche? Satnav only goes to Poland was his comment about BMW...

Why would Europe need the US to save them from Russia? Russia is a weak country, Europe is far stronger. I mean Europe has a population of what, 400 million? Russia is about 100 million, with a drunk army and outdated weaponry. Russia wouldn't dare attack Europe, it's too weak, and would be humiliated, plus of course would lose its largest buyers of gas and oil. This is why Europeans think Americans are arrogant...

goochgooch - 10/7/2008 3:14:03 PM

Not into politics and world history much, Rupert? And please check your population statistics. Don't be so arrogant about the Euros -- the EU could break up at any time. The financial crisis' fallout has not reached its nadir. Russia may appear to you as weak and with an army full of drunks (I kinda agree with you there), but Putin is like a Bond villain; he's going to do something ridiculous, sooner or later. He can't help it.
And no, the European nations cannot defeat Russia without help. Trust me on that.

+5 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
The EU could break up at any time? What would make you think that? Ok, I was a bit out n my population - Russia has around 140 million, Europe 500 million. Europe has the latest jet fighters, weapons systems, a highly trained army, navy and air force. Russia has, what, 70's era Tupolevs, a destroyed navy, a drunk army of unskilled people, abject poverty, and a population in freefall - the life expectancy for a man is just 61, and the population declines by about 0.5% per year. Europe does not need the help of the USA to 'defeat' Russia - and this supposed invasion by Russia will not be happening any time soon. They simply wouldn't dare. Russia likes to think itself as a big power (hence it throws its weight around the Causcuses) but in reality, it has little strength.
I'm not saying we Europeans are ungrateful for American 'help' (I.e. NATO), but I think it is a view commonly help by Americans that 'little old Europe' just can't sort its own problems out, and I think that view is wrong.

I don't think the car is as bad he's making it out to be. But compared to its competition I will agree and say they (Chrysler) are at the bottom of the pack.

I doubt it. My uncle has a last generation Sebring convertible that has been nothing but pleasure for him. No major issues, regular maintenance and it runs great still and looks good too. They may have missed the ball on the design aspect, but the 6cyl. engines Chrysler has are not horrible.

It's funny they mention the Mustang convertible. I am in a loaner one right now. Pretty impressed by the V6 power in it, compared to last generations. It's super easy to get a nice smokeout goin.

All things considered--the size of the Chrysler Group, for instance--they truly do make the worst cars in the world. Just awful. GM and Ford are improving pretty quickly but Chrysler is stuck churning out one abortion after another.

I wouldn't really agree with his reviews, but the sebring that we rented at one point is actually crap and in sedan form, looks like crap in the back. The ride wasn't like our accord. And the interior was hard. And I'm not very trustworthy of their quality either. There are better cars than this.

When is Chrysler coming out with decent cars other then their large ones. The 300,Charger,and now Challenger are decent (not great but decent). The rest of their fleet is utter crap.Until they can build a decent mid sized car and a small car they will never dig themselves out of the hole they are in. This is irespective of the credit crises. There seems to be specualtion that Renault/Nissan want to buy them from
Cerberus. I think if this is true then this would be a good thing. All they have to due is take a restyled Renualt Megane and call it a Caliber. It would be a far superior car then the current Caliber. It would ride and handle much better. The key here would be the styling. 2nd finalize things with Fiat so they can rent Chrysler unused factories already. Perhaps the added income could help a bit. (Ya think!)The new Renualt Fluence Coupe with it's all wheel steering and Nissan V6 could be a really nice Dodge Avenger or Chrysler Sebring Coupe with some real subtance. But Christ! They need to do somthing!!!

Does anybody buy Chrysler products? Isn't 100% of their production designated for rental and corporate fleets? With the company teetering on extinction, actually buying one of their cars would be foolish at best.
