Do the next 911 taillights look TOO much like the Aston's?
When I first saw the spy photos of the next 911 I couldn't help but notice how cool and nice the new taillamps looked.
And, I felt they looked very familiar for some reason...
Where did I see this style before?
Hmmm...
Then it hit me!
They looked eerily similar to the lamps Aston Martin has been using on their DB cars.
Am I right or off my rocker?
Could there be some serious Aston envy over at Porsche?

It's simply the LED design inside of the taillamp, not the actual taillamp shape.
Unlike the V8 Vantage, it will also be the outline of the reverse lamp and possibly the turn signal.
And no, I think it's the other way around. The V8 Vantage, while fantastically beautiful, fails to catch the 911 dynamically. You could get a 480hp 911 Turbo for the price of the average 380hp V8 Vantage. Base price of the AM ($113K) is misleading...

You buy a v8 vantage for its exclusiveness, I see at least 15-20 911 a week and I've only seen about 5 AM V8 since they came out...and believe me the first time I was really excited, kinda like everytime I see a gt3.

Just because the tail lights look similar, get outta here. Only ppl that have Astons, eather cant find a 911 or a M6. Astons are a pethetic excuse for a supercar, this day if I pay 100 grand Im expecting 500 hp.

Yes it definitely look like the Aston Martin light for sure. I would pick the Aston Martin V8 Vantage over the Porsche anyday. The design of the V8 Vantage is stunning. And yes I agree that Aston Martin need to put more and I more hp to their model. I have been saying it forever and hopefully they are listening.
The V8 Vantage need to have at least 480 hp, DB9 580 hp and their cream of the crop Vanquish need to have 650 hp. Now day, even the Audi RS4, new M3, C-class AMG, Lexus IS-F, CTS-V has more hp than the V8 vantage.

Both the DB9 and the Vanqush are butt ugly. You ppl must be drunk to choose a Aston over a 911 turbo. There is a reason why you see more Turbos than v8 vantages, Its because no one wants them.

I usually don't post but this was an interesting discussion going on..
I have been the very fortunate owner of a few cool entry-level exotics, including the 360 Coupe, a Lambo Gallardo, and most recently, an Aston Vantage V8.. I now have a 911 C4S Cabriolet (997) as my sports car.. Lemme tell you what I think of all of these cars from an owners perspective:
Ferrari - 360 was a very quick racecar feeling vehicle. Sharp responses, loud, bumpy, and extremely sporty.. Felt like it belonged on a racetrack through and through. Service was expensive but reliability was pretty good for an Italian car. But NOT a daily driver by any means. No visibility, pain in the ass because of how low it is, and just a pain to park, get in & out, etc.. Now I have 2 other cars I use as daily drivers, but in the end I rarely used the 360 because believe it or not (and non-owners always NEVER believe me), it was such a NON daily driver and a PITA that I never used it, even on the weekends..
Lamborghini Gallardo - This car just didn't feel like an exotic. It wsa beautiful, and had a front lift system to go up and down steep driveways, was luxurious inside, and had fairly good sount insulaition. But the car just didn't have the razor sharp steering, or the precise brakes that the Ferrari had. Still a very fun car to drive, but it BROKE DOWN REPEATEDLY!! Talk about unreliabile..
Aston V8 - This was the daily driver of them all.. I LOVED this car, sporty, very easy to get in and out, had parktronic, great storage room, one of the best stereos i've ever heard in a car, great brakes and steering feel, very tossable, and the engine sounded awesome. What was lacking?? The POWER.. The car just didn't get up and go. It had all the noise, but not the kick in teh butt you expected. I think with 50+ HP and TQ the Aston would've been much better
911 C4S Cab - There is a reason why there are SO many 911's on the road.. They really are the perfect combo of sports car and daily driver. There really is nothing wrong about this car, except for the fact that they are not as exclusive, and the look is not as exotic as an Aston, Lambo, or Ferrari. Interior could also be a little nicer like any of the other 3, but you can't complain otherwise..
That's my .03 cents!

WHAT! If you think the two most beautiful cars ever are butt ugly, you can forget AA you need some serious rehab. The DB9 convertible is herald as the best looking convertible ever!
Aston Martin may be haunted by it's past but they're no question stepping their game up lately, & the V8 vantage is the perfect example of that.
Agreed they are underpowered for their premium price tags, but more than one review on the two car's has recommended the Vantage over the Carrera S...granted not all but some.

For looks and flash when cruising the boulevard or parking in front of a posh restaurant, then the Aston Martin is great.
But for an everyday commuter that you can take to the track every weekend? 911 all the way. Astons aren't made to be driven everyday nor are they made to be driven regularly at the track. Astons are made to be seen, but try driving this car hard like the 911 is made to be driven, and the Aston will not last the year.

No kidding. I was disgusted when Top Gear's DB9 had to be returned to the factory for TWO MONTHS so the transmission could be fixed. Imagine how long it would take to fix if you live in the US! I'd rather get a 911 turbo and drive the sh*t out of it every day and not worry about imminent destruction.

Both are nice cars. I don't think there is anything more going on with the tailight design than coincedence.
Cars have been around for over a hundred years and you can see similarities in anything if you try hard enough.
I really like the way car companies have embraced LED tail-lamps, I do wish they would be quicker in adopting LED headlights though.

Ihatemercs,
What is up with your dumb comments. I'm sorry but you're expecting to pay 100K for 500HP? I don't know what planet you come from but you obviously haven't read the specs on cars. As for Astons being a poorman's 911 that is a dumb comment as well. The two cater to different consumers. Astons are true high end, high performance GT cars not true 'super cars'. Now having that said it's all in the same league of being exclusive. You see 10-20 911's don't mean it's not exclusive. Look how many Corolla's & Civic's are around? So you compare the economical cars that are true mainstream cars to a 911? Just because there's less of one exclusive car doesn't really mean it's not wanted.
You should change your mindset and your attitude towards the auto industry. The way you're thinking is ignorant. Aston is known for being high performance but also having luxury as well. Porsche is known for more sport than luxury but still a good combination of both.
911's and V8 Vantage's both get street credit and lots of respect whether you like to agree with that or not. When you are at that high of price range for cars it does not matter what you get because anything along the lines of a high end Mercedes, BMW, Audi, or Ferrari, Lamborghini, and so forth it all shows a great deal of wealth.
So to go as low as to saying Aston Martin's are a pathetic excuse for a super car that's unnecessary. Look at your - boosts here. Who looks pathetic now?

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage beauty is breath taking, it like sex on wheels;) Ihatemercs, do you like anything else beside your M6? Aston Martin ugly? you got to be kidding right? LOL :) good job, "NOT". The beauty of the Aston Martin is comparable to the like of Ferrari and Lambo. Stop your stop disrepecting to the designer who created the V8 Vantage, DB9 and Vanquish.
I have a question for you? so if you Kia/Hyundai put 500+ hp under the Kia spectra would you buy $100K for it?
Even thought the V8 Vantage only has 380hp and cost over $100k I would choose anyday over the 911. Yeah! it would nice if has more hp, but it still good as it is.

S4,
"He thinks Ferraris and Lamborghinis are "hideous", also."
I don't know if that has much to do with it. I think that Ferraris and Lamborghinis are usually hideous. The reason being that they are usually in the most obnoxious shades of either red or yellow ever invented by the human race. I always think of a 12 year old driving them screaming at the top of his lungs "Look at me! Pay attention to me!" I grew up in a very ...erm proper [read: WASPY] family where such obvious effects are poor ettiquette and generally in very poor taste. My friend Jefferey describes Ferrari and Lamborghini them as "garish". The Aston has a reserved beautiful classicism about it that is in much better taste. The car whispers as opposed to shouts.
Having said that, I have seen some Ferraris that have been in acceptable taste before. I am not so sure I can say the same thing about the Lamborghini.

Ferrari and Lambo are Italian.
They are supercars not gt cars.
They are over the top because if over the top didn't exist life would suck.
They are not Aston.
Aston is British.
Aston is manly, not delicate. In looks alone.
I just can't agree that Ferrari and Lamborghini are hideous cars. Different from the brawny Aston yes. Why not say that you would like a car with more masculine lines like the Aston, instead of describing the other cars as hideous due to some poorly described paradigm . Just because you have a certain feeling about the owners of such cars does not detract from the styling of those cars. In your mind maybe, but why not put aside those built up paradigms and just look at the styling for what it is.
Josh
p.s. Just as many dbags drive Astons as Ferrari and Lambo.

Who exactly, my dearest little boy, is it that you think you are speaking to? Whatever it is that they teach you kids today it is obviously not the ability to read.
I didn't say anything about the styling. Im fact the message below the above one by me was posted only 6 minutes later. So there is really no excuse.
Ah! Things have become rather clearer with the statement about my "poorly described paradigm", as it were. Your message has nothing to do with what I said, it pertains instead to the way in which I said it.
How many Aston Martin's have you been around? You would be the first person I have ever heard of describing Aston Martin as masculine, by which I mean in the area of styling not those who drive them. Maybe the Vanquish could be considered pseudo-masculine due to its more extreme styling, and perhaps the V-8 Vantage could be considered the same due to the acute angled strip running down the side to the vent and its shorter length. The DB9 however is lithe. All of these cars share soft lines and curves in their bodies: I fail to see how that is masculine. A hyper-masculine car would be something like the Cadillac SLR and the like.
This whole Ferrari and Lamborghini color thing is really akin to the situation with Rolex. When someone comes into wealth for the first time they usually the exceptionally cliche: like buy a Rolex. Those who were born to money grew up in the socio-economic situation were by they are aware of the other things; not the cliche. These people have things like Patek Philippes and Ulysse Nardins, and know enough to know that when they go to buy a Ulysse Nardin they may spend $200,000.00 for a watch that has a rather plain face [most of the time] and isn't tackily studded with diamonds everywhere.

See I think you took masculine as an insult. Which might have set the tone for you condescending remarks. I infact I used masculine to describe the broad shoulder of the car, the flat front, and purposeful posture. I say 'the' car because you could apply this to most of the recent Astons.
You could then deescribe the lines holding these broad masculine things together as whatever you like. I walk away saying masculine. This is not to insult you or your intelligence, it was merely to state that maybe it is what you like..... THATS FINE. You can like whatever you want... infact if someone said pick a car any car. It would be an Aston for me. For the very same reasons you said.
My discussion was aimed at your remarks about calling the Ferrari and Lambo hideous. I felt they were founded in some idea that Ferrari and Lambo drivers were attention whores. Which I am sure they are, some maybe not... thats a different debate.
That has nothing to do with the styling, and letting those 'paradigms' blind you from the actual looks of the car seems like a bad idea to me.
I used to hate Corvettes because of the used car salesmen feeling, before that I hated Audi's because the TT was FWD. I realized one day those ideas were blocking my rational logical thought about those cars. I couldn't step away from my preconceived notions and look at something for myself.
If thats not what your doing then great, but it was the impression I got. No need to take offense if its not applicable right?
Josh
p.s. I started writing my post before you posted yours. I leave windows open at work where I write responses. I see now from this second post that you actually confirmed you don't mind the styling, you just don't like the often grotesque individuals who float to those status symbols. I won't let some jackass football player ruin my image of a DB9 if you don't let some halfass actor ruin your image of a Ferrari... deal?

As much as I like Porsche its dumb to think that they are as exclusive as an Aston Martin. Hell the 997 Turbo would pummel an F430 but performance isn't the only reason you buy a Ferrari. If that was it every Ferrari owner would just buy a Twin Turbo Hennesey Viper!

"I started writing my post before you posted yours."
You had the same window open for approximatly 11 hours and 20 minutes?
I don't know what gives you the idea that I feel insulted or affronted in an way, but I most certainly do not. I thought you were young as your post seemed a bit...reactionary. Nothing that anyone on here could say would bother me. Only those who are insecure would ever feel affronted. You know, to borrow from Ayn Rand: Honest people are generally not touchy about being preceived as truthful.
I am not gong to say that the Aston isn't aggressive. It most certinaly looks so in pictures, but my experience has been than it has never really felt that way in person.
My problem isn't really with the people who drive Ferrari and the like, my problem is that lack of taste that is associated with some of that. Ostentatiousness in most social settings is poor ettiquette. It does not require finishing school to know that. Almost any car can be excused, so long as it's tastefully done.

Honestly yes. I think I opened the window the night before stated writing and just left work. I get side tracked while writing these comments.
I think we agree. I find it disapointing that so many awesome automobiles are tainted by owners. I think we have differing opinions about Astons, but maybe my early experiences looking at Astons gave me different opinions. I honestly have this image of Astons.
http://passionlegende.free.fr/www/guppy/Passionlegende/Collection/competition/Le_mans_classique_2004/Net_G_LeMansClassic--040.jpg
Ferrari's and lambo's just seemed so much prettier with there fragile looks. So I associate one thing with another and come up with Aston Martins as being masculine. That and a conversation with I had with someone involved in Aston design. He described his work as masculine.
Anyways I digress... I did not mean to give the impression that I was posting in a reactionary way. Often times I write an entire post only to delete it and start fresh because I don't want to give that impression. This comment:
"I don't know if that has much to do with it. I think that Ferraris and Lamborghinis are usually hideous. This comment gave me the impression that you were like many of the others on this forums. Bound to be stuck in there ways. Believing what they know now to always be true, and ruining there ability to appreciate all automobiles for what they are. I may have spoke to soon, you seem to be rather rational, and your opinions are not fixated on one thing, one brand, one ideal, like many others here on Autospies. Rational non fanatical thinking and discussion seems to be lacking on Autospies.

Well, I know here you can walk into the dealership with your checkbook and drive out with an Aston Martin V8 Vantage or DB9. There is obviously therefore, there is is some extra production, but I don't know if there is an allocation for that.
As far as customizing, which I would imagine most people do, I am unaware if there is a wait list for that.

With your logic we should all own a Focus because it's really a Range Rover.
Explain is there something you know about Aston and there cars that make them Ford like, because ford owns them. I remember in the past... 10 years ago where Astons had some borrowed components but these days I think things have changed.
