Dodge's Gas Price Protection Plan Is A SCAM
You can't blame Dodge for trying, but basically it all boils down to this: if you take advantage of Dodge's new "fuel price protection plan", you have to forgo the cash rebate. On a new Hemi 1500 Ram, that works out to a total rip-off for the consumer.

Blah, blah, freakin blah. Of course the program is going to be torn apart as a "scam" since it's chrysler/dodge. Oh but if it were toyota or honda that came up with it first, it'd be hailed as the greatest plan ever.

As the most fuel efficient major car maker in the US, Honda does not need to try something like this...

No tattedtwice, its just s much of a scam as the Mccain/clinton summer gas tax holiday proposal which they are in no position to do anything about until after the next president formally takes office in January 2009. There are too many ifs and buts in the Chrysler gimmick which is entirely model dependent. Chrysler should stop confusing the customer and provide straight cash incentives instead.

Dude, put down the bowl. Are you honestly comparing lawnmowers and portable generators to V-8 engines?! You may as well picket Sears too while you're at it.

tattedtwice, you must be new here. These ppl rip every effort apart if it comes from toyota (good and bad). Do research first before speaking

no your right if it were Toyota than know they wouldnt be saying that, as you can read by alot of these bias posters their responses, if you cant walk away with at least 6,000 off a Dodge Ram without a rebate than you just got sold, ive seen as high as 10,000 off one in the paper. "Any" car shopper knows that a rebate is from the factory, it doesnt affect a dealer at all, so fine pass up the rebate for the gas, negotiate the price down. It is no different than the whole 0% or very low interest vs a rebate when alot of the times what you are saving in interest by doing 0% or the low interest rate is less than the rebate if you have good credit and get a very good rate elsewhere. But hey you always have bias cynics, that wont see logic, but find away to someone is trashing Toyota, blah in this "dodge" post

Meh. Every company has their tricks to get people in. If you don't do the research and fall for it, well that's your fault. As I've always said, you must be on your game to protect your dollar. Very nice of you to hip people to the game. Good math, informative article.

Thanks. We did some quick math and it didn't seem right, so we started really diving into it and quickly discovered that the average person was going to throw away a few thousand dollars if they took advantage of Dodge's offer. Had to say something...

A dealership I worked for was offering a year's worth of free gas. Of course it was if you bought the car at sticker you'd get a voucher for whatever the window sticker said the average cost of gas was for the car. It's just a matter of getting people to notice you with what's important to them. A cash rebate from the manuafturer? Meh, seen that. 3 years of gas for $2.99? Wow! That's interesting.
Good for them for trying something different.

Please compare apples to apples - Honda engines, whether it be lawn mower engines, generators, airplane engines are among the most efficient in their respective segments.
But you are right, in a way...Honda makes pretty much more engines and types of engines then anybody...

i wonder if it was meant to be a scam or if dodge was desparate for buyers or maybe, just maybe they wanted to do something good for people? not that i'd buy a 1500 anyways...id rather get a tundra or silverado instead.

yeah come on 0-around45, an f-`150? are you kidding me? seriously, even the silverado beats that! f150 only has like 300hp. silverado gets 367, tundra has 381

Some of you guys need to step away from HP figures for a moment and realize that even low on hp the F150 has the highest towing capacity in the half ton segment, Toyota Tundra included!

You need 300 hp in an F-150? For all that racing you do in them???

Rupert...Ford NA doesn't offer a diesel option, so we're kind of stuck with either the 4.6L 250hp or 5.4L 300hp engines for producing any kind of usable torque, for towing applications.

I always forget that the smaller petrols don't have the torque. That's why diesels are so popular in heavy cars, as the torque is what you need to pull away sharply and to tow easily. Any hp deficit is usually hidden, plus the mileage is good.

i dont see how this is a scam, they are giving those things away rebate or no rebate, so now your just getting a discount on gas along with thousands off your new car.....always a cynic

I heard that if you do the 3 year $2.99 fuel thing you don't get any of the rebates or incentives, but thats only what I've heard. Anyone know if thats true?

you didnt read my post at all...im referring to a DISCOUNT not a rebate. thats why it saids rebate or no rebate, ive heard of people getting like 7-8000 off one of these things, people are going to want more than just a rebate off of these things, and many other cars, the rebate is from the factory, the discount is from the dealer

85bmw,
In many cases other incentives still apply. See your dealer for model specific information.

WE SCREWED UP. Dodge announced the full program and they included a $3,000 rebate with the truck we used in the example. So, if gas hits $5 a gallon, you actually would do pretty good. Of course, if it only hits $4, you lose a little, and if it stays where it's at, it's a bad deal.
