Does BMW Have A GL-Class Killer Waiting In The Wings?
BMW may yet build its super luxury SUV, according to company insiders.

Three years ago we were supposed to see a BMW X7 on our roads, a behemoth of high proportions aimed at rivalling the Land Rover Range Rover set. Mercedes-Benz knew about it too, as they prepared their own vehicle for this segment, the GL-Class.

Something happened along the way, probably at the same time as when BMW sold Land Rover to Ford.

Even a larger version of the blowfish that is the X6? Hahaha, this is going to be so hideous on our roads it'll look like the aliens have landed.

They'll sell every one of these too won't they :)

Enter X7. It might not be better than the Range Rover, but it will compete with it. Just like the Hyundai Genesis supposedly competes with the LS, 750i, S500, and A8.

Wow, this may be better than the X6 I'm thinking of buying.

I need a good real estate car :-\

I think BMW opted for a smaller, pointless vehicle with the same crap mileage as a big SUV. It`s the called the X6.

Why do you hate every German car so much?
The Lexus LX gets horrid gas mileage, much worse than the X6 (which gets 22 combined), yet you don't say anything about it. In fact, you rave about it.
The Infiniti EX can be considered pointless, but you love that vehicle as well.

You bring up good points in some articles, but try to get rid of your strong, troll-like bias against anything European. Give credit where credit is due.

that must be why it's sold-out, right huu?

and why people see it on the road and think it's stunning, right?

and why people who drive it are amazed at its handling, right?

get in your ES and go away.

I think they could still make it, but in small numbers. An X7 may still be profitable financially and marketably...for BMW. It'll piss off the sport car purists, but generate a bunch of interest within the SUV market.

It would be an instant hit, if it were initially made with the dual-mode transmission and slick diesel engine.

I still remember...a long time ago, when BMW just bought Land Rover, they were going to make the Range Rover their top of the line SUV. They chnaged it to a body-frame structure rather than body-on-frame, and the solid axles were replaced with independent suspensions.
Too bad that wasn't the case. The Range Rover (not the Sport) has a wonderful timeless look...it can go offroad, and all BMW would have had to do was make it sporty. Couldn't have been too hard with the new frame and suspensions.

Considering how wonderful the Range Rover and X6 are, I have no doubt that the supposed X7 would be an absolute head-turner.

Btw, if the X7 could go off-road, then it might as well compete with the G-class as well. Remember, the G-class was once thought to be replaced by the GL but kept for its heritage.

I agree--It's pretty hard to top the Range Rover. I owned a 2003 and it was terrific. Every year, LR improved it, honed it, made it better. The interior now is first class with leather dash, better finishes, etc.

The biggest negative is its powertrain, and even that is getting improved in 2009 with the 5.0 380+ HP.

If all goes well, I will be driving a 2009. However, if BMW had a proper X7, I would have to give it a serious look. The X5 is good, too, but missing cache.

As long as an X7 don't look like an awkward X6 it should do well.

I think they should stick to smaller vehicles. The SUV market isnt that great. Lets focus on smaller fuel efficient vehicles

don't kid yourself, no BMW truck has the cache' of a Landrover/Landcruiser. You rarely if ever see women drive them, yet an X5 splits more than 60% of it's market with females.

If you can find me a comparo between the 2 where the X5 consistently wins, then you'd have an argument. As it is, they only sell more X5s, then again they also sell more 7-series' than Aston Martins, but who cares?

Why would they want to build a vehicle for a dying demographic?

In the US (the only place anybody would buy this thing and where BMW gets a large portion of it's sales volume) people are trending away from this type of vehicle. They should continue to focus on their fuel efficient diesels and sedans into the market

I don't think the demographic is dying. I think priorities are being realigned to where they should've been 3-5 years ago. The largest and/or luxury SUVs (and trucks) should have only been purchased by consumers who had a "real" necessity or by those who could afford (fuel, maintain) to drive them in today's conditions. These vehicles were marketed so widely as fashion/wealth statements that now some people are just starting to understand that they shouldn't have gotten that largest SUV just to be "cute".

But there are wealth (or well-off) and professional consumers that can easiy afford such vehicles, especially if they really need it. I remember back in 04-05, business owners were encouraged to buy up the large trucks and SUVs b/c of the govt write-off on their taxes...somewhere in the neighborhood of $100k for purchasing a vehicle for (only) business uses.

I don't see it that way.

Just like they have the 1-series, MINI, and RR; BMW wants to be the best in every category they can compete in. What's wrong with that?

They haven't yet done the uber-SUV b/c they know they probably need to either modify their product more or need to begin to modify their marketing to let consumers know that they can have a slick 335i and an X7 in their garage and not feel guilty about it.

i think bmw should wait and see how the x5 and x6 continue to sell with gas prices before they invest time and money on a large suv
