Does BMW Have A Hit Or A Miss With The 1-Series Convertible?
The new 1-Series convertible will enter the market in spring 2008 as a step up to those who may shy away from Volkswagen or Mazda, but also want an alternative to the Audi or Mercedes Benz offerings.

Initially offered with a 230hp 3.0liter 6 cylinder there should be plenty of power for such a small car, but it will be supplemented by a twin turbo 306hp a bit later for those so inclined.

Take a look at these pictures and see if you agree, that this is one of the most beautiful small convertibles to come along in a long time.

Does BMW have a hit or a miss with the 1-Series convertible?

nicad, you live in the US. You may be European, but you're not hearing Europeans talk.

And wow, I can read magazines, too! Every one of the British magazines I read love the 1 Series! They praise its great handling and performance- but its downfall is the lack of practicality in the hatch. BMW has cleverly opted out of bringing the hatch to our shores, instead giving us two-door versions that don't need to be practical.

nicad.."you hear people talk"? what, during recess?

You are so full of it...pretending you live in europe and test drive autos there that aren't even available.

Seriously, you have to be 13 yrs old if that with the least cogent posts (OK you and houston are tied) on this site.

Anyway..the 1er is going to be a big hit. Looking forward to driving the 135...

I'm european and living in Europe and I like the 1-series, its not the most practical hatch but its the only one with rear-wheel drive and thats why its not practical. Your totally biased opinions won't change the fact that this car will sell very well, you'll have to get used to that styling bacause you'll soon be seeing them everywhere.

clarkson hates all BMWs...and while the 1 is an odd car, and not too practical, it's been a hit with single professionals and with families as the second sporty car.
All the BMW traits in a smaller package.

Nicad do you live in Europe?

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable driving it or being seen in it but no doubt it will be a hit.

The Z4 is a manlier car than this though in my opinion. But hey, its your decision at the end of the day so if you enjoy the car thats all that matters. No doubt it will be great fun to drive.

Next Spring, I'll be trading mt 2003 Z4 for the 128i Cab..
So whether it is a "fit or miss" with Joe Q. Public is not relevant to me. I bought the Z4 when it was deemed to be a miss with Joe Sixpack and it's been the most fun car I've ever owned. I'm sure the 1er Cab will be the same

Kinger;
You're right, but I'll have had my Z4 for 5 & 1/2 years by next Spring and as much as I love my Z4, it's time for something new..

S4cabriofoxone:
The 135i is definitely and option, but it doesn't come out til the Fall of 2008, so I miss the nice summer top-down weather. As well, the trade-in value of my Z4 is going to really take a hit if I switch in the Fall rather than in the Spring..

Good looking, just the right size and nice power this car will be a huge hit, and now comes the question, does BMW pull a mini on us with "we can't the car so there is a 6 month wait with a hefty overcharge" why ask the question we all know the answer?

1st - This (if not intentionally crippled by BMW) will have the best power to weight ratio/performance in the (non-M) fleet.

2nd - This is the 1st BMW in a very long time that I actually find to have a pleasing/cohesive design.

3rd - The price point makes it far more accessible to many new car buyers for which the 3-series has become too expensive.

A HIT!

Um, OK.

The convertible isn't needed when the coupe is nice enough, and the added weight/complexity of a convertible spoils the simplicty of the small performance car.

i'm sure they'll sell quite well.

The coupe is amazing, but the convertible is a bit too feminine. It reminds me of the old VW Cabrio. I feel the same way about the 3 Series convertible- feminine. Love all of BMW's coupes, though, all four.

My pick would undoubtedly be a black/black 135i coupe. Hot!

May be a very bit hit, but not for me. I respect the engine (135i) but I don't like the styling. Yet. Will see it on the street. Many complains about the built quality on this cars(in europe, where they already received it), the performance too (anything but straight line is .. not perfect). Will see ..

I think you should go lay down and start to hear the drum roll and imagine people staring, the thrill of a hair pin turn , the wind blowing in your face then wake up, you were in a BMW 1 conv how did it feel?

Unlike the old 318i, I think BMW finally got it right with the extra small model. I think this one will succeed. But I don't like front buggy head lights, they look too big for the car, bug eyes.

The 1 Series has four seats, will be less-expensive, will be more popular, more comfortable, more spacious, etc...

In short, one's a cabrio, one's a roadster. It's an obvious difference.

That is one cool cabriolet. And I love that color! Alas, I'm too tall for the 3-series cars, so I know I won't fit in this one.

However, for those under six feet tall, I bet it will be a smash hit!

First of all, i'm 6'5 and will fit into this car; believe me i have seen it in person. And for all of you Z4 owners who complain...we all know the reason you are salty is because you know you will get smoked by a 135si one of these daya and can't handle it.

Bobby, did you actually sit in the car with the top up? Did you fit comfortably? If so, that's encourgaging for me, because I am 6'4" and long-waisted. When I sit in the 3-series coupes, my head hits the sunroof. I presumed that the 1-series cars would be smaller still, but I haven't actually sat in one.

Your seating position might have something to do with it. Do you drive with your legs stretched out and the seatback upright, like I do?
