U.S. and California environmental regulators are investigating whether Volkswagen AG deliberately circumvented clean air rules on thousands of diesel cars sold by VW and Audi in the U.S.The EPA said Friday that Volkswagen allegedly used software to circumvent emissions testing of certain air pollutants in Volkswagen and Audi vehicles from model years 2009-15.
"Put simply, these cars contained software that turns off emissions controls when driving normally and turns them on when the car is undergoing an emissions test," Cynthia Giles, an enforcement officer at the EPA, told reporters in a teleconference.
