EPA Set To Unveil Stringent Tailpipe Emission And Fuel Efficiency Standards Today

The Obama administration today will unveil its several hundred-page proposal setting fuel efficiency standards at 35.

5 mpg by 2016 and proposing the first-ever federal limits on tailpipe emissions.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will unveil the proposal at the White House briefing room at noon. EPA and NHTSA will post the new proposals on government Web sites at noon.

The government said the policy will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 950 million metric tons, save the average car buyer more than $3,000 in fuel costs and conserve 1.8 billion barrels of oil.

It's the end of the road for the Euros. However, the nut case GOPs may pressure Obama to have to make special concessions for diesels. After all, europe is as much america as detroit, we can't be prejudice when it comes to bailing out slackers who won't innovate.

And just how are the Euro Hybrid Diesels not innovating. The Japanese can't seem to get a civilized diesel much less mate it to the hybrid to obtain the best of both worlds.

The other day when that whack job GOP senator Joe Wilson rudely yelled out "YOU LIED", he was directing that at agent009, not president Obama. 009s linked clearly said $1300, not $5000.

Maybe 009 was referring to those non-existant euro hybrid diesels? Even then, $5000 may still be way off as HOndas big man already said that diesel hybrids would be way to expensive to built. Seeing that european vehicles are on average more expensive than other makers while delivering less of everything, there's just no reasons to believe that they can make a hybrid diesel cheaper or on par with non-diesel hybrids. But we don't have to worry about this imaginary diesel hybrids since the europeans still has no clue on how to build a hybrid.

Anyway, great job as usual 009.

The end of the road for the standard vehicle, electric hybrids is the future like it or not, what is not to like when you have 640hp and four hours of battery time and 80mpg when the generator kicks in, check out pML Flightlink, there car that they converted is incredible. Way to go Obamma, Gas will also sky rocket in price or they will tax it way more.

I agree with 009 (for once)! I hate that you have to spend a premium to even get the fuel efficient hybrid and in the long run, end up saving nothing. What a waste hybrids are. Hybrids are a waste of my time. I prefer a straight diesel.

only for now 5 - 10 years hybrids will be more practical and affordable was the tech is improved. Remember the very early cars had less than 30 HP.

If there is money to be made from the parameter of the regulation, there will always be innovation that will accept the challenge. Give it time. Someone will invent a new nut busting fuel and redesign the combustion that will run on urine that would give an output of 500+ hp. And we're all be happy again.

I remember the 70s when they said emission and fuel requirements will kill performance cars and leave us with just compacts. Today cars are faster and more efficient than ever. Good Lord a V6 Honda Accord is faster than a 1970’s Corvette and gets near twice the fuel economy.

Challenge to answer consumer demand = progress and innovation.

I love federal math. 009". Are you that STUPID 009? Think of the saving of importing less gas from abroad not to mention the cost of having military/political presence in that region to make sure we get a steady supply of their oil.

You Repubicans need to stop these scare tactics. Look at the comment by tehoptimisticpessimist. Companies will overcome the new standards because it will be profitable for them to achieve that standard as quickly as they can. They have not been push hard enough over the last 20 years and look at how the so-called heavy-handed European and Japanese gov't help gotten their car companies more competitive.

I laugh at your tactics certain times but some time your stupidity just amazes me.

Lowering the fuel mileage of our cars 5%, 20% or even 50% is not going to change the world dynamic in which we have to have military presence around the world. People that think that don't understand global politics.
