EPA releases 2010 Lexus RX 450h fuel-economy figures

We saw the 2010 Lexus RX 450h at the 2008 LA Auto Show in November but at the time Lexus had not released any fuel-economy figures.

Well, as we near the dealership arrival of the 2010 RX, Lexus has released more info on its new hybrid SUV.

The 2010 RX 450h features an updated version of the Lexus Hybrid Drive mated to a 3.5L V6 engine that produces a total of 295-hp - 27-hp more than the current generation RX400h. While delivering the performance similar to V8 engine the RX 450h provides better combined fuel-economy than the average 4-cylinder mid-sized sedans.

Crap. As much as I dislike Lexus I would actually consider buying one of these things. Why won't Ford put the Escape Hybrid drive train in the Edge and save me the temptation?

Good job Lexus. I know 90% of comments here will be negative, but the numbers win in the end. This blows MBZ and BMW diesel S..C..U..A..V..whatevers away. Acceleration should be incrementally improved as well with the larger V6. Proving, once again, tat hybrids are the real deal. Fuel economy, low emissions, performance. The trifecta that diesels just dont have. Nice.

except that the RX is in a larger class than the smaller X3. It is midsized, not a (un)cute ute. Then you have emissions, and none of the engines you have listed would pass today's emissions standards, while the RX's far surpasses them. Only the new X5 3.5 diesel meets curent T2B5 and Euruo 5 (6?) standards. Performance wise, even the largest 3.0 you listed is slower than the current 400h, the new 450h will be faster yet.

Ergo, the only valid comparison is the RX450h (28/27 mpg; 0-60 est not available but with larger engine should be quicker than 400h's 7.3sec) to the X5 3.5d (19/25 mpg, 0-60 est 7.2sec). And even with AdBlue, the X5 doesnt come close to the SULEV rating of the hybrid.

Sailor, as thetruth pointed out you named 4 cars that are not even in the same league (I speak from experience as I bought an X3 3.0 for the pool girl to drive, horrible car) for this reason Denny de-boosted your post. I'll consider buying one, and I drive a LS430 currently. Roughly the same performance (aside from cornering, and I'm not going to be tracking it), 4WD for bad winter conditions, extra cargo space for when you move stuff around, all the luxury features, and roughly 10mpg better in the city, all for less money than I bought the LS for. Show me the reliable 300hp 25+mpg luxury coupe for around 40k, and I'll consider it too; although it will need to be notably improved somewhere to overcome the lack of cargo space to compete.

No sense touting your EPA fuel mileage figures when the vehicle itself sucks. There's more to a vehicle than mpg. I am a little disappointed by these car companies putting fuel economy at the top of their marketing-speil list when there are many people in this country (and the world) to whom gas prices and fuel economy aren't even a thought when they buy their vehicles. Lexus should emphasize the styling, "creature comforts", and utility of this RX first and foremost. And, hybrid SUVs are pointless. For example, what kind of idiot would buy a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid? I just don't get it.

Chuck maxima3.7, Talk about marketing ploys... What the hell is a sport activity vehicle? I'll tell you what it is, it's a car with absolutely no utility what so ever, bought and driven by people who think they know how to drive. It's a car that sees more miles on the back of a flatbed than any Lexus does on the road. And if you weren't $13k buried in your maxima, you'd probably own one. And here's another marketing ploy... full maintenance... that's right, front load the maintenance and bury it in the sticker to diffuse people who will be in your shop about 10 times more often than someone driving a Lexus. I have seen the new 2010 Lexus RX at the Abu Dhabi MotorShow recentley and i really liked it. Design is an evolution of the current RX with L-Finesse pasted on it. It looks way nicer in real life than in pictures. I especially liked the way how the front end especially headlights look from the side and also interior was very nice and unique with fine quality soft meterials. Cabin also seemed bigger than current RX and more airy and transparent(it had a big sunroof).

A good looking luxury Crossover with 300BHP and goood fuel economy. Good job Lexus.

ChuckG37: stop the BS. Noones buying it anyway. All you do is make Infiniti look bad. I was looking for a couple and my choices are Audi A5 and G37, but after reading your comments I'm seriously turned off by Infiniti and I just might buy a Lexus;-)

the point of this article is to show that with each succeeding generation of hybrid technology, horsepower and mileage go up at the same time. shouldnt we be grateful that our times allows us to have this?

The RX kills the X5 35d.

BMW X5 35d:

city/highway: 19/26 mpg

0-60: 6.9 sec

Lexus RX 450h:

28/26 mpg

0-60: I'm sure slightly better than the 400h's 7.3 sec

Hybrids are clearly better. And this is only the beggining. Soon we'll have plug in hybrids.

Can't wait to see what the Lexus HS250h has to offer.

Let me guess, if you cared about the environment, you'd buy a V10 diesel instead? Or maybe a dinky diesel that wastes most of its power on torque?

I see an RX with a less pointed nose. The FX has a flat nose and rounded tail with no cargo capacity. Nice try though.

I would expect a 7.0 second 0-60 time
It shouldn't have gained 4-600 lbs in the redesign, so they screwed up there
It already had top crash test scores
But if it can be faster and 33% more efficient than the gas version, even after gaining 10% more weight, that's impressive, whether you like Lexus or not.
The number of vehicles with this combo of power, efficiency, and luxury are?

Buying this SUV is not about being the MOST ecologically conscious. However, buying this over an X5 or Cayenne, or ML with comparable performance is MORE ecologically conscious. Owning a hybrid doesn't have to be some zero-sum all-or-nothing ordeal as Lexus is proving. Hybrids can be for everyone, not just tree-huggers.

i thoroughly enjoy you blokes bashing each other about the head and shoulders with misinformation. But please don't forget that here in the States, diesel is a dollar or so more than gasoline. So now, go figure that into your cost and don't forget maintenance(cuz enthusiast keep their cars past the free oil changes).
