EXCLUSIVE: BMW's Tom Purves spills the beans about what's coming next? Well, kind of...
With the time change being three hours between D.C. and L.A., we always find when we're east, it's hard to get to sleep at a reasonable hour.

So becuase of that, you end up watching a LOT of late night TV!

Lot's of Conan, exercise machine infomercials, you know the drill....

Well, I hit the jackpot last night when i was going around the dial when I came across the show 'Night Talk' on Bloomberg where they had BMW's Tom Purves (President, BMWUSA) on as a guest.

I started to watch and I figured it would be the usual executive sound bites but good old Tom started talking future products!

And boy did my ears lift up!

So here's what he said or should I say eluded to....

Indirectly, he spoke about and confirmed the X6...he called it an X5 Coupe.

He then said they are building something totally new and it WOULD NOT be an R-Class competitor.

His description of the vehicle went like this:

It would have all the wants customer's have been asking them for with features like a higher driving position, would give customers the choice of 2 or 4wd, and a lot more luggage space but not the same scale as the R-class.

That said, put two and two together.

He then mentioned they would come out in the 09' model year with TWO diesels out of the gate but did not say which models.

We think 5-Series and X5 but we hope we're wrong and it is 3-Series and X5 at launch.

And finally regarding hybrids, don't hold your breath for a 3-Series Hybrid or something at the low end.

He remarked that the hybrid offerings would be at the high end...V8's, V12's.

So let's hear your opinions and speculation, now that we have a treasure map.

Let's find the treasure!

This thing is ugly with its humpback of Notre dame.
All it is to me is luxurious Aztek.
And it's not even orginal, because AMC Eagle was the first to come up with that idea, and then subaru tried it though not in that Godzilla scale.

I think the vehicle to which Tom Purves is referring is BMW's first "SAM"..sport activity minivan.

I think it will probably be labelled the X7 and it will be a cross between MB's GL450/550 and a Toyota Sienna. Hopefully it will be better looking than the X6.

For some reason I'm thinking it'll be called the X8. He says its not an R Class Competitor, but I think it's going to look a lot like the R Class but higher off the ground. They'll probably save the X7 nomenclature for something really large and ruggid.

I didn't say this here, but it will be the X5 with the fully-tuned version of the variable-turbo diesel, shortly (and I mean SHORTLY) followed by the 3 series, but it will not get the fully-tuned version of the variable-turbo diesel (I'm pretty sure it gets the 225-ish HP version with mid-300s ft-lb torque, but I'm not 100% on those #s).

Sorry to rain on the 5-er fans' parade, but the variable-turbo diesel will NOT see the E60 cars in the US ever. That being said, the next gen 5-er will have one at the start.

I sound like I know what I'm talking about, but I could be making this up. Only I really know-- well, that's not true, there are quite a few people who "know".....

I WISH WE HAD THE GL420 CDI IN THE US.

Good, I got that off my chest. An X5 with a turbodiesel would be nice, too... or a Range Rover.

Here is an update that we found out at a training seminar for BMW Sales Consultants a few weeks ago. Diesels will arrive next year in the US as a 2009 models. They will only be available in the X5 3.0 and 3-series. The 5-series will not arrive in the US with a Diesel until the new model arrives in 2010. Reason for the delay is due to BMW wanting to be 50 state appliance. Currently their are 8 states that do not allow the sale of new diesels. BMW is waiting until they can get all 50 states on board and such ...

hmmm.... sounds eerily like what I said....

4me4ever, what did you think of the 1-er in Black Sapphire with Lemon/Black? I simply MUST have one (that combo). All I can say is they better NOT make that a launch supply car, I want to keep that combo RARE!

"...higher driving position..."

Is it me or does the new vehicle sound like a large SUV, one of the few items BMW doesn't have in their lineup. Maybe finally a vehicle that'll actually fit 7 or 8 comfortably. And I can totally see BMW customers wanting something larger especially all those rich soccor mom's. The only thing that goes against my guess is that it'll come in 2 Wheel or 4 Wheel drive. That makes me think it'll be more like a large crossover than SUV, however, the suburban does come in 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive.

SHOCKER.. maybe BMW are going to compete with Mercedes by building busses and HGV's!
