Early Indications Show SMART May Be A Hit In The US
Prospective buyers are forming a long line to buy a very short car.

More than 20,000 people have put down $99 deposits to buy Smart cars when the iconic two-seaters built by DaimlerChrysler AG go on sale in January.

"The response has been overwhelming," David Schembri, president of Smart USA, said at a presentation in Detroit Tuesday of the boxy, 8.8-foot car, called the Fortwo.

Michigan residents will have a chance to test drive the car next week when Smart brings five Fortwos to the Ann Arbor South University Art Fair as part of a cross-country road show.

$99 dollars the price of a dinner, this is hardly a indication that a car is going to sell?

I expected to be blown away when seeing this car's mpg rating. I wasn't. There are sedan's that do better and are probably safer to boot.

If you watch some of the crash tests of this thing (some might even be on youtube) you might be impressed. I seen one of a Smart and a S-Class head on and there was no intrusion into the cabin of the Smart. I also watched a few more, one in particular was testing a Smart crash into a highway barrier at high speeds and another car crash into the same barrier at the same speeds (car was similar in size to an Aveo or something) and the Smart did better in the test...

I see these little Smart Cars all over the road since I moved to Canada, they're definitely popular here.
