Edmunds reviews BMW X6 (Is it good or bad?)
It looks awkward in pictures and some find it hideous, but the 2008 BMW X6 50i isn't nearly as warped when you see it in person. It's kind of a supermodel from behind, with a slim, narrow roof at the top and curvaceous hips at the bottom. Designers call this sort of thing tumblehome, and an SUV without it looks like a refrigerator.

The front is all BMW with a big twin kidney grille and fighter-jet-size intakes at each corner. The roof line goes on forever in profile, giving the X6 a hatchback-style look that's unique at best, a little too forced at worst. The designers at BMW say it's "coupelike," so they — and they alone — call the X6 a Sports Activity Coupe.

All of the reviews I've read have been lukewarm and have completely turned me off of this thing. Glad we got the X5.

Well I'm sure you don't need reviews to tell you if you like the styling or not.

Most of the reviews have indicated it is at least as good, if not better on the road than an X5.

The biggest complaint that has been levelled against it is it's lack of practicality -- but then it is labelled a coupe, so who buys a coupe for practicality...

It's still good looking (IMO), it still drives very well, it'll still fit 4 people and luggage for the average journey?

So I ask you, what has changed?

The Edmunds review hits many good points. It's a nice looking car, but certainly overpriced. 4 seater SUV with notorious run-flat tire and under 20 MPG doesn't seem attractive. There will be still buyers who are either BMW fanbois or who think style worths more than anything just as Benz CLS was quite a hit. Only time will tell, but don't forget the economy situation.

I am still trying to figure out how armchair reviewers can label a vehicle overpriced without spending any time driving it first. Seems pre-mature at best to me. And then to go on and call others biased ("fanbois") is pure hypocrisy. Spare us your stilted b*llsh*t please.

nybimmer, that's correct. We're thinking of trading the 18" run-flats for 19" all-seasons because it would provide a smoother ride. The run-flats are really more trouble than they're worth.

You have to drive it ... I completely disagree with Edmunds on the review. I just got back from testing with BMW at Spartanburg, SC and the X6 is simply amazing. It handles alot better than the X5. We drove the twin-turbo 6 cyl and that is more than enough power for the X6. I drives like a 6-series. I am 6'2" & had plenty of headroom in the rear seats. I am not going to be sitting in the back that often.

nice change in the look of SUV's. i bet we'll see more of these "sport activity coupes." it doesnt look that bad, really. i find it kind of nice, even if it IS a bmw.

This review is in sharp contrast to reviews I have read on this site. I guess its all about what you are looking for when you drive one. I am waiting to drive the new FX50. I really like the old FX.

LOL!

Edmunds gets more ad dollars from them than we do!

Here is the issue...the people who review at Edmunds are clerks.

Not ONE of them has ever OWNED a car that costs over $30K in their lives.

How could someone like that appreciate the finer things.

It would be like giving Opus One to Homer Simpson.

In order to TRULY provide an acceptable opinion, I believe one HAS to have skin in the game.

NO other competitor of AutoSpies.com, has even ONE reviewer that is a consumer of these automobiles.

And if you asked them what car they owned, most reviewers don't even OWN a car themselves.

How crazy is that?

Now that's just a stupid thing to say, 001.

Edmunds gives very informative, useful, interesting reviews. You don't have to be rich to like a nice car. Obviously, they have endorsed quite a few luxury cars in the past.

They loved the X5. They just don't like the X6. Is that a problem?

WOW, how in the hell can you write for an auto site and not even own a car? Thats like working for Viagra and not using the pills.LOL, You almost feel obligated.
Thats really sad.I lived in Germany for several years and made alot of good friends there due to my being in the Army and got to drive alot of different cars. So even though German cars are not my complete cup of tea I nearly pissed on myself when I drove a M5 in 99 for the first time. I have to admit there is something about them even if I dont and probably wont own one.

I've never really thought of BMW's as ugly...until now. I don't much care for the 6 Series, but they aren't UGLY. Sorry, but to me, this is ugly and it really seems like they tried way too hard.

This pretty much sums it up...

"When the drive is done, we're still scratching our heads...But the compromises in utility leave us wondering if BMW has just created a very heavy small car at a very big price."

I think this quote sums it up better:

"We get some time on a dry course as well and here again the X6 is solid and precise where most other SUVs would be flailing with understeer. There's so much grip from the massive tires we wonder if we could go much faster with a proper sports car. Yes, it's that good."

When you compare any vehicle to the class leader (X5) it is very challenging to improve on it, however BMW has improved the dynamics.

A significant mark-up in price for less functionality in the name of style. The extremely practical will not buy it of course. The extremely trend-conscious, will.

Anthony is right on the button! Impractical cars like Ferrari and Porsche will never succeed either. The CLS was a huge bomb, too.

Some will hate the styling, some will hate the practicality, but you guys have to remember it's not meant to be as practical as an X5. Its supposed to be a sporty version of the X5, and just like a 3 series coupe and a sedan, the sedan should be more practical, but the coupe is still more expensive.

But if you want a coupe, you buy a coupe, not a big heavy SUV.

If you want a high seating position, all-wheel drive, incredible dynamics, and distinctive style then get an X6. If you don't then don't! There is a model for just about everyone these days. Why be so critical?

Vendetta why don't you trade up from your Yugo to an AMC Eagle.

Seems from your previous posts that you have a thing for "AMC Eagles."

Vendetta, you must drive an AMC Eagle and it is causing you to put out so much hate directed towards BMW. You must aspire to own one but can't get a decent trade on your AMC Eagle..

The backside may look by it's own, but when the transition from back to side profile occurs, the design just does not match up. the car looks good from the front, but the reason why the sharp incline to the rear of the car looks awkward is because the front roofline is equal to that of an SUV(the X5) and to almost 3/4 of the side profile, the X6 has the upper roofline of the X5 and then suddenly goes through a sharp declining incline to meet the rear which has been raised above the normal waistline of the X5 to give a sort of a rising waistline look of modern cars, but this transition and match up of the roofline to the rear waistline looks non smooth and un natural.

I found the word, Un natural, the X6 looks bad because the design looks non pure and completely un natural, almost disproportionate and mangled.

I saw one parked in front of my office yesterday. Had a slight scratch / dent on the front right already.

Anyway, the interior looked a bit cramped with not much headroom.

Looks good though
