Environmentalist John Picard gets keys to a BMW Hydrogen 7
Sustainability Expert, Builder and Entrepreneur John Picard was handed the keys to one-of-25 BMW Hydrogen 7s on the U.S. roads as BMW today announced that he is the latest person to evaluate the technology of the world’s first hydrogen-powered luxury sedan.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 melds the polished luxury of BMW’s largest sedan with the virtually emission-free power of a hydrogen combustion engine.

The BMW Pioneer Program gives industry leaders and prominent figures in entertainment, politics and business a BMW Hydrogen 7 for their daily use as proof that hydrogen powered vehicles could someday be viable for everyday driving. Picard joins Will Ferrell, Jay Leno, Ed Norton, Cameron Diaz, and Jason Bateman, among others, who have opted for a BMW Hydrogen 7 as their energy-efficient ride of choice.

“I love cars and I love the BMW Hydrogen 7. I have owned many cars, raced them, built them, and converted performance cars to natural fuels so I have a HUGE respect for what it took for the BMW Group to design and engineer this vehicle. BMW has kept the integrity, performance, and luxury of the 7 Series in tact while giving the driver an awesome sense of being responsible in the world. Hydrogen is the ultimate molecule and I commend BMW for creating a vehicle that breaks through the institutional barriers in the transportation space. The Hydrogen 7 can create and inspire the kind of sustainability we need on the planet.”

Picard’s commitment to sustainability has helped him to become one of the most sought-after experts in his field. He was one of the first members of President Bill Clinton’s Greening of the White House team that developed environmental energy audits and innovative upgrade recommendations for the White House. In 1995, John received international attention when he built his own home completely “off the grid” to operate independent of all traditional paid utility services. Picard is currently serving as Sustainability Expert for Planet Green’s major programming initiative that tells the real story of a town in Kansas that is re-building green after a tornado. GREENSBURG, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Craig Piligian is a 13 - episode series that will air on Planet Green - the newest member of the Discovery Network Family - in May.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 is not a concept car, but a production model vehicle that has successfully completed the entire Product Development Process. While the BMW Hydrogen 7 is not for sale, it is considered to be a milestone in bringing forward hydrogen as the sustainable fuel for individual transportation. Running in hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but water vapor, representing a major step in reducing harmful CO2 emissions.

BMW coined the term “EfficientDynamics” to define a combination of short-term, mid-term and long-term measures for the continued reduction of fuel consumption and emissions while at the same time enhancing the performance and driving characteristics that are at the core of BMW. While BMW believes that hydrogen will replace petroleum as the long-term alternative to fossil fuel, it has worked consistently to optimize the efficiency of its gasoline engines. Further, BMW looks to its Advanced Diesel technology as another nearer-term solution and will introduce its first hybrid vehicle by 2009.

Previously announced members of the BMW Hydrogen 7 Pioneer Program include Will Ferrell, Jay Leno, opera star Placido Domingo, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Richard Gere, Sharon Stone, Oscar® Award-winning producer Davis Guggenheim (”An Inconvenient Truth”), and famed director Steve Gaghan, among others. The vehicle has also made an impact oversees, with luminaries such as Michael Glos, German Federal Minister for Economy and Technology, and Günter Verheugen, Vice President of the European Commission, and many others.

It's too bad everyone can't afford a $100,000+ car. I guess the Hollywood group now have both a Prius and a Hydrogen 7.

Everyone just ignore the more practicial Honda FCX, nothing to report since its not German.

This article is so misleading and full of mistakes.

The Lexus LS600h is actually greener and more environmentally friendly than the BMW 7 Hydrogen. It also outperforms the Hydrogen 7 easily boasting a higher top speed and quicker acceleration.

performance really doesnt matter when it comes to purchasing a "green" car

Explain to me how the LS600h is "greener". The Hydrogen 7's emissions are water vapor. Last I checked the LS600h still runs on gasoline. Come back when you have learned to think for yourself rather than blindly assuming that everything Lexus does is superior.

Because it takes as much energy to make hydrogen fuel - right now.

I drove the Hydrogen 7 and while I liked the overall interior styling and the technology of the car, I wouldn't ever buy one. Its by nature a performance based car and it doesn't perform. The hydrogen powerplant changes the characater of the car completely. Who buys a bimmer with no performance???

While the current Hydrogen 7 may not be a performance car, that doesn't mean the performance of hydrogen cars won't improve as technology progresses.

"I drove the Hydrogen 7 and while I liked the overall interior styling and the technology of the car, I wouldn't ever buy one."

Well, good, because you can't.

"The hydrogen powerplant changes the characater of the car completely."

LMAO.

i see this as a technology set back.
now we get hydrogen technology, and BMW chooses to burn it?
that's like giving you are notebook to unlock the knowledge, but you use it as a cutting board.

What do you propose to be a better solution???

There is NO OTHER SOLUTION.

there are alternative, S4. the most efficient way (currently) is to use hydrogen fuel cell. sorry to bust your bubble-- BMW does this solely for bragging rights. a combustion hydrogen car is easy to make since all the components are there. However, it is a totally different story when it comes to hybrid/fuel cell because you need to build everything from scratch.

A "set back"? That is ridiculous. BMW has been developing hydrogen powered cars for decades and has developed a fully functioning hydrogen and gasoline power plant. It can run on either petrol or hydrogen. This is a brilliant and elegant solution because the infrastructure is obviously here for petrol and just emerging for hydrogen. An exotic fuel-cell system would not be practical in a real car.

if you watch jay leno's video on his website when he drives this car, you will understand why liquid hydrogen is not the way to go.

the trunk is 3 times smaller than that on the LS600H, and the engine is soooo noisy because its been changed to combust hydrogen. its just not practical

The Lexus runs on gasoline. The BMW runs on hydrogen. They don't compete. When the gas is all gone what are you going to do, stay in your stationary Lexus? BMW is developing incredible solutions for the future and all you can do whine about the trunk?

Until a "clean" and cost-effective way to produce hydrogen is available, anything hydrogen-powered is simply transferring the pollution from the car to the energy manufacturer.

true.

as a FUEL, hydrogen simply cannot compete with hydro-CARBON fuels.

the infrastructure, storage, AND energy costs in stripping H away from hydrocarbons or water is also greater than the energy recovered burning H.

not unlike ethanol when the costs of GROWING corn and processing are included, these fuels are NET energy LOSERS.

their ONLY reason for being, is hyping a green IMAGE. a highly flawed one at that, when the WHOLE picture is examined.

Hydrogen is simply an energy storage medium.

One of the great things about it is that you can use it in internal combustion engines which is not only good for enthusiasts but makes for a easy transition when gas becomes more scarce (and expensive).

The next generation of nuclear power plants will be clean and safe. Once people figure this out we can say good bye to middle east craziness and have clean power that is home grown. Electricity can then be used for combustion engines for people who like to drive and for battery cars for everyone else.

Brave man. Driving all that Hydrogen in the back takes guts. One little leak...one little anything...and KABOOM!
