Face Off Friday: Half the Price, Same Fun - Mitsubishi Evo IX vs Porsche 911 GT3
Who would’ve thought that someone would compare the power of a Porsche to a Mitsubishi? Well today’s Face off Friday does just that by putting the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX and the Porche 911 GT3 in the same sentence and comparing the abilities of both. The Porsche 911 GT3 has 415 horsepower and a MSRP of $106,000, while the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX has 280 horsepower and costs less than half, with a MSRP of $31,399. So can you have the same fun for less than half the price with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX?
Let’s look at the Porsche 911 GT3 first. The car comes in a 3.6 liter 6-cylinder engine that produces 415 horsepower and 300 lb-ft. of torque. This gives the Porsche 911 GT3 the ability to do 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds with top speeds of 193 mph. There is no way, that Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX could beat that right?
Well you’d be surprised. With a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo engine, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX produces 286 horsepower and 289 lb-ft. of torque. That’s 129 horsepower less than the Porsche 911 GT3. So what is the 0-60 mph time on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX? 4.5 seconds with top speeds of 150 mph.

Didn't Top Gear do a similar comparison with a Murcielago? Anywho, I doubt the Lancer has much of an advantage once things get twisty. Maybe it would've been better up against a 911s. Not a GT3.
GT3 Anyday.

Actually the EVO was compared to the Murcielago. It basically kept up on Top Gear's test track.

Rom64, it is obvious you have not driven an Evo. I believe Road & Track pitted the Evo against a Cayman and they were "surprised" that the Evo not only kept up, but was faster on the track than the Cayman. I was surprised the Cayman kept up as well as it did. The Cayman had Pilot Sport SP2's, which undoubtedly kept it in the game...

Don't compare the cars if you have never driven them.
The Porsche GT3 did 0-60 in 3.8 seconds in the lates Car and Driver.
The best I have seen for the stock Evo was a bit over 4.5 seconds like you said.

This article made no sense...how exactcly did the EVO beat the Porsche...and if it was all about 0-60 times then yeah I would buy the EVO and save a ton of money. But what about the people that can actually afford a refined sports machine with hiqher quality materials that will last longer than cheap vinyl or plastics. While one car my have a high "fun" factor...the other has high prestige factor. The difference is that one is just fun while the other is refined, prestigious and fun. When you have the money...spend it!

Porsche is the cheapest super car maker compared to Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Aston Martin. For the price you get a lot of passion in the cars. Their all well built cars. The Carrera GT was absolutely magnificent. An EVO will never get as much head turns as much as a Porsche. You will also get a lot more respect if you drive one too in comparison to an EVO. EVO is a great car dont get me wrong but it just doesn't have the umph i'm looking for in a car.

RICEMASTER,
Are you a dumbass?
Had to ask with statements like this:
"EVO plastic on dash and door panels have Lexus like texture/grain and is padded, not hard and hollow. EVO interior feels warm and inviting while Porsche is cold and hard."
WHAT? The Lancer has Lexus-like interior quality?
Doubt it buddy! The Lancer is a cheap car, therefore (and I know first-hand) it has cheap, scratchy plastics which feel brittle and flimsy. Unlike the Porsche, buttons are not damped, and instead make an unpleasant, cheap 'clicking' noise. The Lancer interior (same as the EVO bar the seats and wheel) is bargain basement quality when compared to the Porsche.
I don't know where you get this bullshit info from (SLK 55 has a crude engine? Porsche flat-six reminds you of an old bus? 997 911 interior is worse than a Lancers?)
Did you lose your human senses in some drift race that went wrong? Or you just don't know what you're talking about?
The latter for me thanks, buddy.
I'm still laughing at that quote. Priceless and sad in equal measure.

guys this article never said the EVO is better than the Porsche. It's saying can you have the same fun in the EVO as the Porsche for LESS Price. Of course there is no doubt that the Porsche is better...
Chewy check Porsche's site for the stats on the Porsche 911 GT3... you're wrong

The GT3 is a precise sports car. The Evo is a ricey sedan, posing as a sports car.
Though I admire the EVO and STi for being the best value-for-money performance cars on the market, the GT3's extra $70,000 gives it a lot more than most would think.

this is real sad, compering a four door cheap import to a supposely fast expensive car. now why would anybody spend $70,000 on car that has the same performence. ill tell you the people who think porche is the best and fastest car and they pull up to a teen with sti or evo and get their butt handed to them.

Today horsepower is cheap, but refinement, build quality and balance are definitely not. I can build a go cart that will run away from both on a very short track, but It isn't proving much. Put these two cars on the Daytona International Speedway and race them for ten hours and see who hands who their rear end. The Porsche flat six has been proven time and again in the 911, 930, 935, 956/962, etc. Only one marque can lay claim to 16 overall victories at Le Mans and 20 at Daytona. Not to mention complete domination of Formula 1 for two years, and the CanAm, where ultimate power counted for everything. Try as you might, there is no substitute.

Well it seems that RiceMaster is true to his name, he's an expert on Rice and not cars.
I like how he says "The GT3 is a car designed for track use, refinement isn't a high priority, but compared to a crudeass domestic car like a shakey Vette. The Z06 was meant for track work too.
And don't let me start on Ricemasters interior comments. THe Evo is built from an econobox, so its interior is inherently cheap. The 911 is a luxury GT, so therefore it's interior will have better plastics, even if it is the GT3

RICEMASTER,
No i'm not a bit confused because I know what it is. A relative of my owns a GT3. I guess refinement is subjective. In your case you're into ricers so of course you will back the import tuner types. I on the other hand have interest in European sports cars that have heritage. Bang for buck the Porsche is well worth it in my opinion. I disagree with refinement in the EVO. As good as the performance is, it is no where close to Porsche's build quality and balance. Can an EVO have an engine in the rear and still be able to have a well rounded ride and handling? probably never as close to a Porsche.
I believe Top Gear had a comparison between the Porsche 911, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and the M6 on a run on the isle of man. If i remember correctly the 911 beat them both even with less horsepower. That proves it's not always about how much horsepower a car has. It's how the car distributes each and everyone of those horsepower.
EVO's good but the Porsche overall is great. It's not even comparable. Porsche is way out of EVO's league in every aspect. Luxury, weight distribution, passion, heritage, sex appeal, and the list can go on.

This is one of the worst posts for spelling errors. I encourage everyone to try Firefox. It automatically checks spelling. Comes in handy if you don't want to look like a dumbass.
It won't catch improper use of there. Can't people use their properly? I am an engineer and have horrible grammar, but I am on the ball enough to use their and there properly...

It's ok bro, not everyone on here is 100% serious all the time so they may use some slangs. But you are right I do see some improper spelling and horrible grammar sometimes (no names mentioned). There are a few who talk like they're 10 and by the way they talk it truly shows their maturity level. But it's a site for car fans and as long as we all somehow someway figure out what the heck each other is talking about then it's good enough. You have some great pointers though in regard to spelling. Firefox does do spell check which is why it's one of the better web browsers out there. But the majority are still iE users. I'm sure Microsoft will do something about that.

I've driven a Boxster S and the interior is definitely nothing to write home about, then again, a Porsche is a Porsche is a Porsche.
I like both, and both are basically fast engines that happen to have seats bolted onto them. Also, the EVO has AWD so why wouldn't it be able to keep up on the track?
A better comparo would be to go up against a BMW. One car has all performance, the other all badge (price and comfort are about the same).
The Porsche just happens to have both prestige and performance, but of course you'll have to pay for it which is fair.

If I had a GT3 sitting in the garage, I'd get enjoyment out of just looking at it. If I had the EVO sitting in the garage, the enjoyment would come from humiliating ALL other cars on the road. The Porsche has absolutely nothing to prove.

This article was pretty awful. Did I miss something or were there extra pages? I don't think these cars are worth comparing. If what I've seen is true, the person who is in the market for a Porsche wont be in the market for an EVO. Never mind which one is actually faster, "fun" was never described quantitatively in the article. My definition of fun is a lot of things but not one of them is burning rubber at every stop light to beat the person who pulls up next to me so we can compare "funness."

ronsscooby, how did you come up with that?
He sounds pretty intelligent on the subject of cars.
He is right, too. If you think being a car enthusiast means you have to love EVO's and STi's, then you are wrong.
Anyway, a REAL car enthusiast doesn't need 4wd, Active Yaw Control and all those other electronic gizmos which basically drive the car for you, brake if you are going to fast, and correct slip angles when you are pushing on a bit.
A real car enthusiast wants a challenge, which the 911 GT3 provides.
Oh, and ronsscooby, shock me by saying something intelligent.

Let's nip this right in the bud! When you buy German or Italian...you are paying for the privilege of owning a machine that can reach and attain speeds approaching 200 MPH. Very few Japanese cars can claim that...especially the EVO (top speed 150). There are cars from BMW and Mercedes that are limited to 155 because of a "Gentlemens" agreement between BMW and Mercedes. Porsche has no such agreement and neither does any vehicle manufacturer from Japan. German cars historically have always been engineered for extremely high top speeds and that's why they are so expensive. 0 to 60 is not expensive...it's very cheap actually! For about 3 or 4 grand I can tune a 1995 Civic to hand an EVO its ass in the quarter mile. BMW or Mercedes cars do not limit their cars top speed becuase of engineering reasons like for example the EVO. So you might be able to brag that your EVO can hit 0-60 in the same time it takes Porsche but you'll never be able to claim top speed without spending some serious cash! So it basically boils down what you can afford to accomplish. Any car these days can be modified to run a good 0 to 60. But only cars like the Z06, 911, and all Ferraris and Lamborghinis are designed for high speed straight from the factory.

Dispute one thing that I’ve said with your own facts rather than criticize it for being a “stupid article”. Need4Speed,
The main drawback of 4bangers is that they have lower top speeds. Having a higher top-out speed because youre engine is twice the size isn't something to brag about, having a gas sipper outgun a racing V8 is.
Everyone but the Germans are sensible. Who needs to go that fast off of a racetrack? I doubt any of the ppl who own these cars have ever seen the limits of what their cars can do. Truly wealthy ppl aren't dumb enough to risk losing everything on some stupid rush.

Your "gas sipper" only works when the boost is running high (usually anything over 11 psi I consider high)...affecting your "gas sipping" miles per gallon. As a matter of fact, according to www.fueleconomy.gov the combined gas mileage for a 2006 Mitsubishi EVO is 20 MPG. That's the same combined gas mileage for a 2007 911 Turbo 4...so your gas mileage argument is null and void. Don't take my word for it..do the research yourself. As far as "Who needs to go that fast off of a racetrack?"...fair enough...who needs to get to the next stop light in 4 seconds flat. It's not about need...it's about want. Top speed and 0-60 times makes as much sense as blowing up tires drifting around a racetrack! I've seen a 500hp Integra walk away from a stock Z06. Made sense?..hell no! fun?...hell yeah! One thing I know for sure is that the Z06 engine is gonna last alot longer than a stressed 4 cylinder putting out 500bhp. 4,6, & 8 cylinder all have their different characteristics. You can use whatever exotic materials you want in either engine...but one physical fact remains is that the smaller enginge will always operate at higher a stress than it's larger counterpart to match its performance. Every part no matter how expensive has a lifespan under which normal wear and tear will reduce its integrity. The more stress on that part the faster its integrity will degrade. Those are physical facts...i'm not making anything up. The only thing I will ever ask of anyone on this board is to be an informed poster...don't shoot off at the mouth..as I have done in my last post. It was not necessary for me to mention my Engineering background but I got upset...for that I would apologize to S4~. When your informed it makes things more enjoyable because we can discuss things in a rational manner. Just look at some of the posts on this board. Some people are so brand conscious that they can't be reasoned with...even if the evidence is staring them right in the face. I can go on but I would like to leave you and others on this board with this little tiddbit. I retrieved it from
"http://seriouswheels.com/cars/top-2005-Chevy-Cobalt-SS-Coupe-Time-Attack-SEMA.htm" ...let's see how many heart attacks this causes...have a good day!
The Time Attack Cobalt SS Supercharged coupe runs in NASA’s Unlimited class, which includes FWD, RWD and AWD vehicles. Following SEMA, it will race on Nov. 8 at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in central California – the same track where it beat the best times of an 801-horsepower AWD, twin-turbo Nissan Skyline and a nitrous-charged Volkswagen Jetta."

ronsscooby,
People buys cars like that because they have no balls, hence the need to compensate.
Jay Leno own a McLaren F1, how many times do you think he's taken in over 160mph on the streets?
Get a life, and try driving some of these cars before you "pretend" to know what you're talking about.
Need4speed,
The Evo is a gas sipper, as it doesn't burn gas when it doesn't have to. All these V8s needlessly burn gas ALL of the time.
This site has way too many children. They should start charging a fee just to keep them off, unless highschool kids have credit cards now.
