Fifth Gear - 2007 Audi TT Coupe Manual Vs DSG
Vicki Butler-Henderson takes two, virtually identical, Audi TTs to the track for a shoot-out. The only difference between them is that one has a manual gearbox, the other a semi-automatic.

Traditionally, auto gearboxes are slow and ponderous, blunting outright performance, but Audi would have us believe that their double-clutch S-Tronic system is much slicker. We find out once and for all which is fastest.

DSG is the best auto/manual trans in the world right now. I am just pissed I can not get it in the S4 YET.

You are right about Audi's DSG (or Stronic, as they call it) - it's terrific. Unfortunately, Audi and Volkswage) currently only offer it on vehicles with transversely-mounted engines, in Audi's case the TT and A3 models. Apparently installing DSG on a car with a longitudinally-mounted engine is a bit tricky, and VW/Audi won't offer this gearbox on its longitudinally-mounted-engine vehicles for another year or so. I plan to buy either an A5/S5 or the new A4 late in 2008, and I'm in the same boat as you - I wish I could get the DSG gearbox too!

I love the DSG in my A3- amazing. It would probably be a full second slower from 0-60 if it had a conventional automatic.

I can't wait for it to be engineered to fit into the entire lineup!

In a TT don't want any flappy-paddle nonsense. Give me a proper manual.
