Fifth Gear - Jason Plato Test Drive Caparo T1
The Caparo T1 is a £210,000 street legal racer offering Formula One levels of performance. Extremely light and powerful it will accelerate to 100 mph in under 5 seconds and corner at speeds unheard of in previous road going cars. Jason Plato takes it to the track to give his view on a vehicle that redefines the word 'extreme'.

This test drive was done a week and a half ago, which too bad the T1 flipping caught on fire and injured Plato enough to check out the hospital. Burns across his hands, arms, and neck I believe. This past weekend was the BTCC final race at Thruxton. He was leading by eight points over Giovanardi but after the two races Plato lost out on the championship by three points over his rival.

For my the T1 doesn't have the allure it had a year or so ago. Until CAR, evo, and several other British publications all mentioned the 'magazine press test' event was filled with glitches and this debacle, the T1 is a lost hope so far.

This proves that even the best engineering can be botched by poor manufacturing. The T1 is indeed a phenomenal vehicle, but there are problems that need to be fixed. No doubt they will be before any customers get their hands on their new 4-wheeled rockets.

Other manufacturers should see the lessons to learn from this. First: building a vastly lighter, better performing vehicle is possible. Second, it needs to be done with strict attention to manufacturing detail and robust quality control.

The new Ariel Atom would be my choice.
