Finally the Truth? JD Power Tells Us Why You Avoid Certain Marquees
We all know what makes us choose a particular marquee. Maybe reliability, performance, even gas mileage. But the Detroit News in conjunction with JD Power has taken it one step further by quantifying why we avoid certain marquees.

Poor perceived reliability tops the list for vehicular avoidance, as does poor quality. But other factors such as maintenance and depreciation and simply being boring also factor in as well.

Surprisingly enough the survey reveals that while European automakers experience more unexpected repairs annually (imagine that), the combined annual unexpected repair costs and routine maintenance combined show them slightly less overall to own than the their Asian counterparts. European also faired best in overall economy scores as a group as well.

While 48% of us will consider an American make in our initial choices, a full 23% of us avoid them due to the financial instability of these marquees.

The Top 5 Areas the Needed Improvement by Nationality are as follows:

American:

Reliability/Duarbility 77%
Quality of Workmanship 69%
Resale Value 65%
Fuel Economy 49%
Technology of Vehicle 43%

Asian:

Percent of vehicles built in U.S.A. 43%
Maintenance costs 35%
Pricing 33%
Availability of parts 29%
Cargo capacity 23%

European:

Pricing 77%
Maintenance costs 60%
Availability of parts 42%
Percent of vehicles built in U.S.A. 24%
Fuel economy 17%

Wow, what I want to know is, who are the 35% of the people who thought resale value is OK on american cars!?!?!

From which site did the internet survey originate from? If it was from the Detroit News web site then the results are skewed for obvious reasons.

Nice that American cars are built better than European ones. Just goes to show marketing does work, it can sell any sort of crappy product.

Love the "unexpected" repairs cost.

It's too bad more N.Americans didn't realize that most Japanese cars are built over here now.

I'd like huu76 to define 'crappy product' in relation to European cars.

I'd also like him to butt out of automotive-related threads (which is every thread) because he doesn't really understand what makes a good car.

He drives a Jeep. Enough said.

While I prefer European cars in general [BMWs & Audis], I think the part about the European "routine" maintenance costs are skewed because BMW still offers free maintenance for the first few years... so if you factor that in, Europeans are probably higher to maintain than the Asians on an annual basis.

Don't you think they'll pull the plug on it eventually?

I mean think about it... Mercedes and Audi both get rid of their free maintenance within a year of each other.

Can you say peer pressure?

Matt,
Crappy = overpriced, underengineered w/ quality < U.S. cars.

Fantastic,
Lower IQ would mean you use diesel because you think it lowers your dependency on oil when it actually increases dependency by 25%. Hey, sort of like Europeans. btw, my Jeep has nearly the same mileage as a 2007 GL320CDI. Pretty lame considering my Jeep has bigger displacement, its gasoline (and it's a 20yo engine).

and is about 2 feet shorter and one heck of a lot lighter? 2 fewer seats, way less safety equipment?
and please show us somewhere that shows us how much oil it takes to make diesel...you go on and on about it...

and i don't know where you got that because my data says the GL320cdi gets 28 UK mpg, while both the 4.0 and the 4.7 grand cherokee get 17 UK mpg...that's a big difference....especially considering the gl is only 0.5 seconds slower to 62 mph....
god you do spout rubbish.

Because I respect you, here you go.
http://www.ucsusa.org/clean_vehicles/fuel_economy/the-diesel-dilemma.html
3rd paragraph from the bottom, heading starts with "Make fuel economy standards truly 'fuel neutral'."

There is no real savings if you need 25% more oil to travel 30% further. Hybrids travel 30% further on less oil.

Is your data our equivalent of EPA, or is it an actual real world test?

My sources were real tests. Like everyone points out, the Prius EPA of 60mpg drops to 45mpg real world.

Even with your smartass comment, here's straight from www.mbusa.com, official EPA of 20/25mpg estimate. btw, your 28 is Imperial Gallons which is 4.2L, US gallon sis 3.8L.
http://www.mbusa.com/models/features/specs/performance.do?modelCode=GL320CDI&class=07

Anyway, take away the usual real world loss and 16mpg sounds about right.

Do you still think it's rubbish?

I will give you the point that the GL does outweigh the Jeep by about 1000lbs, but isn't double the amount of torque more than enough to cancel that out?

Everyone always likes to comment that the torque will help performance.
