First Look At The 2009 Mercedes G-Class
Forget the naysayers and the cynics - you have to love the classic appeal of the G-Class.  Even if you don't, you still have to respect any model that's able to hold a prominent place in the Mercedes lineup for nearly 30 years.  Personally, Mercedes can keep the G-Class in the model lineup for the next 100 years and I'll be more than happy to publish each and every update they make to the industrious SUV.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.  For now I have to stick to the changes Mercedes is making to the G for the 2009 model year, and as you can see above, the design changes - while subtle - once again aim to bring the SUV's styling more in line with its younger siblings.  Most notably, a new grille featuring three louvres has been added, replacing the former model's seven or so louvres.

Once you get over it's unique look, it's actually a very nice vehicle. I saw a G55 AMG the other day. I like them.

I don't understand the purpose of an AMG G-Class. It's a hardcore offroad vehicle so it's built to be a tough go anywhere vehicle, yet, you want it to be a sports car that can go 0-60 in under 5 seconds? Why not get 2 cars: a standard G class and a BMW 335Ci.

The G55 AMG is for the people who won't take it offroad and need something to "represent (yo)".

This is the bad boy of all offroaders, looks the part as well, a classic. Too bad it has the fuel economy of a Hummer.

I like the G-Class. I just don't like how it (along with the Range Rover) has become an "it" car. Anyone who sees you driving one automatically thinks your a wannabe Hollywood star since they all have one.

The G-Class is just about as popular as somebody wanting to get malaria.

Why can't they just stop the model nobody cares about: the G-Class. It's the forgotten Mercedes. If you took the Merc badge off someone could swear that it is a Land Rover Defender thats been modified.

Whenever I think of all the cars in the Mercedes-Benz lineup I always forget the G-Class. Not because it is ugly, not because I just don't remember it, but because it is a car nobody really cares about.

It may be a good car, in fact a very good car, but no matter how good it is do people really care about it? If there was some Mercedes showroom and it was burning down and they had to take all the cars out but leave one in, I bet it would be either the G or the GLK.

I read somebodys comment on how it is the only true Mercedes SUV.

Mercedes, BMW, Porsche etc. SUV's aren't made for offroading or SUVing. In fact, I think a studded football boot has more off-road capabilities than those type of SUV's.

Luxury SUVs aren't really about SUV at all. Of course you can probably find some lower range non-European SUV that has the word 'Luxury' in its design line, and it is a luxury car that can go offroading. But for a luxury European SUV to go offroading, there is only one answer. Thats why the Range Rover was created.

You know, the ML and GL are very capable offroad SUVs in their own right (much better than the BMW X5 and the X6 and even the Audi Q7). Mercedes' has a history of building capable offroad and AWD SUVs even before the G-Class came along in 1979. Prior to World War I and during the early and mid 1930s Mercedes released a few AWD SUVs that were considered extremely offroad capable in their time.

G is very popular here in Middle East. Especially the G55 AMG. But still nowhere near as allround, luxury, comfortable and capable offroad as Range Rover, Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, Pajero.

I kept one 2006 G55 for like 2 months. The only thing i remember and liked about was it's awesome Captain view. Even better than the Range Rover. but rest there was serious lack of luxury, comfort and so many compromises. It also felt slow even though it had 470BHP. I thought maybe becasue it will be great offroader, well it was in all areas except in heavy dunes as it weights a lot and other stuff.

all in all very few people will buy such an expensive SUV just for offroading. Defender, FJ Cruiser, Nissan Petrol, Pajero, H3...etc are much better alternatives.

Only the people who wants something unique, like it's looks, retroishh/old school shape, MB badge and that captain view wil consider it.

The only thing I never liked on the G is the spare tire cover. It looks like something you'd see on a conversion van from the 80's.

They don't sell the G class in Britain - the only ones I see are about 20 years old.
