First photos of the Apple iphone working in a BMW
Well my iPhone is as about as old as everyone else's. Only waited 2.5 hours at #30 in line at my local AT&T store for one. Let me just say before the BMW Part... I'm one HAPPY customer.

If you don't think this phone lives up to its hype (well other then no 3G), then you're just fooling yourself. This phone at daybreak is everything and more then one could hope for in a portable device... and I haven't even played with it as an iPod yet!

So what you lovely folks want to hear, its compatibility with our e9x's. Let me give you my specs first:

1 week old 2007 328xi e90 with iDrive & Premium Package. That's about all you need to know.

1 hour old iPhone 8GB

Fully loaded contact list, calendar, bookmarks, mail, and a few videos.

Our initial reports have listed our iPhone as "fully compatible" with the bluetooth. I fully agree and endorse that statement so far.

No more:

Incorrect incoming calls

Abbreviated Phone Book List

One name and number per user

This thing is FULLY FUNCTIONAL with iDrive and the integrated bluetooth.

There is NO GPS, and its running on EDGE networks which is pretty slow, I guess. Overall, I love Apple product and as the owner of the ipod video 80g, I'm satisifed with it..except for the cheap headphone it came with. So where does GPS screen fit in? If it works on a single LCD screen..does this mean you have to switch from GPS mode to ipod video mode? How does this integrate with I-Drive? Could this mean..you could also surf the web while inside of a car?...that sounds very dangerous to me. Are all these features really worth paying $5-600 for a cell phone that comes w/$60-$140 plus monthly service fee?

Apparently the 30,000+ customers going through Apple stores PER HOUR yesterday sure think the phone is worth it. If you're asking whether or not its worth it to buy one STRICTLY for it's BMW integration.. If you're a tech savvy customer then I would think it is. If you're one of the customer who just can't stand how darn complicated I-Drive is then you might want to stay away and go find a lawyer to write your will, because your probably over 50.

Ha! If you are a tech guy then you have a better phone then the Iphone for a long time already. I mean, what is new with the phone, other then the cool way to touch the screen? The Iphone is just a nice interface, nothing else for me. My phone does excelent 5MP photos, DVD like videos, GPS (integrated, doesn't need any monthly fee to use it), WiFi, 4GB microSD memory (hot swappable - you can have as many x 4GB you want), plays any videos you want (mp4, avi, mpg, wma, etc) and so on. So the whole iphone ideea is just for people leaving in the past.. there are plenty of phones just like iphone minus the interesting touchscreen, since 2-3 years ago. They are called Pocket PC Phones. Rings any bells?

I mean, common, Cingular/AT&T has a wide 3G coverage (I tested it , works as fast as a DSL, with speeds up to 2Mbps) and Apple is smart enough to fool people saying that EDGE is the best way to stay online with the iphone, because EDGE is everywhere. My phone has EDGE plus 3G. Maybe the smart guys at Apple didn't know you can have more than one technology at once in the same device. Smart, eh?

Do you have a Nokia N95?

Yes, you guessed right. The only thing where I loose is the screen. The N95 screen isn't as big as the Iphone's, but only to keep it close to a phone, not to a Palm size. There are advantages and disadvantages, of course, but it's big enough to watch any movie or browse the net. Full web support is also available standard.

There also is a Sony coming out just now, with a 5Mpx camera AND 3G (US and EU bands), and other stuff of course. So the iphone will only live between it's fans. Since lately so many other phones are better, but I guess fans will stick to their "craziness", the same way they did with ipods, when pretty much every single phone out there will play mp3. Why carry an ipod and a phone (for the last 3-4 years) when you can only use the phone for playing music & making calls? Apple woke up, kinda late, but hey, they have the iphone now :)

Too bad for those who own Lexus!

I'm sure there will be some people trying to swap their Lexus to BMW just for the iPhone. Indeed, I would laugh at loud.

More good news from a German automaker.

The iPhone is most likely the best phone out there right now, but there are a couple reasons why I wouldn't get one. I am techy and I usually buy the tech stuff when it comes out, but I don't know about the iPhone.

The main reason I wouldn't get one right now is because I still have 1 year left on my Sprint contract with my Treo 700p. The phone is good as is the call quality, network availability, and EV-DO speeds. I had T-mobile before and I switched because their coverage was patchy (wouldn't work in big buildings), even though their call quality was excellent. GSM just doesn't work as well in my area and I am guessing in North America generally. I have used phones from the Cingular network and have been on the receiving end of calls from it and the call quality is terrible, too much static (I don't know whether anyone of you have experienced this or not). I am not going to buy a phone from that network and I was upset that the iPhone would only be available on AT&T. Now, if by next year the iPhone was available on Sprint or Verizon, preferably Sprint, then I would be game.

Integration with BMW, I guess BMW is going to be the first to "fully" integrate since they were also the first ones to integrate the iPod. Apple products are very well designed and it is good that BMW is looking to support products from them.

Treo is the benchmark of the smartphones.
iPhone is type of web-browser with a phone capability and a damn good entertainment mini tablet at that, no doubt. I been a fan of Palm OS for over a decade now and, I love the simplicity of this OS.
Kart1, Verizon is now AT&T btw! :) It was bought-out a few months ago, I do believe. And, Sprint Sucks.

I believe it was BellSouth that was bought by At&t. Sprint is very good in my area as is Verizon, but Cingular completely sucks no questions about it.

Verizon does have one thing that I would like to have on Sprint: Comedy Central Channel.

What I am trying to say is that I really want the iPhone, but I really don't want At&t.

Kart1, I need to make a correction. Cingular was boughtout by AT&T. BellSouth is now AT&T..I think they first merged but later bought out by AT&T.
I think T-Mobile and Verizon was the top picks for awhile..not sure about now.

I connected my iPhone to the IPOD interface on my Mercedes and it works just fine. Evertyhing intergrates into the central display as it would with my regular iPod. I would Imagine the BMW has a ton of features since it is iPhone specific. Im sure other automakers will follow BMW on this one, especially Mercedes since they both have full ipod integration (not to be confused with an auxilary dock)
