Regenerative braking is an integral part of every hybrid electric vehicle.

Here, deceleration and braking energy is converted to electrical energy to keep batteries charged. Hydraulic hybrid trucks and buses recoup energy by pressurizing a hydraulic fluid that's stored in an accumulator, and then use this energy when extra power is needed. There is third type of regenerative braking where recouped energy is stored in a flywheel revved up at high rpms

Yeah, allowing the teams to develop new energy recovery technologies that will trickle into street cars to make them faster, more efficient, and cleaner is just dumb. Who wants to move ahead?

I do not like the direction F1 is going with the new aerodynamics and attempts to go green. Bring back the V10's, traction control, launch control, and let the teams run wild.

I totally agree.

These teams house some of the most brilliant and capable engineering minds on the planet. To stifle and confide them is criminal.

In my opinion, the only restrictions placed on F1 should be wheel horsepower and safety requirements. Outside of that, technologies developed for racing could directly trickle down:

1. Traction control: algorithms developed for racing could carry over to high end sports cars

2. Aerodynamics: research could carry over to all vehicles, especially if laminar flow control is studied.

3. Brake regeneration: research into battery and capacitor systems could directly carry over. I could envision a car running a superconductor electric motor (higher power and torque density than even an F1 engine) and a very advanced battery pack (nano-scale engineered, aluminum-air, single use battery) could make an EV very competitive in F1.

The mind abounds...

Just imagine is the F1 steering wheel made its way into consumer vehicles. All of the cars mechanics/electronics (climate, audio, etc.) controlled by little buttons/knobs on the front of the steering wheel. That would be amazing. At least we could ditch the center console to make room for a beer fridge.

if the thbought here is that F1 should be a hotbed of development that consequently filters into mainstream production cars, why not make the only rule a ban on the internal combustion engine (or at least the reliance on oil based fuels) - thereby forcing these world class engineers with generous R&D budgets (and without the real world restrictions of a support infrastructure) to come up with genuinely capable and robust alternative fuel and powertrain options.

Major developments like this need something critical to force an action. Short of wars or government legislatio0n, maybe sport and a positive customer reaction is another approach.
