Forbes writer says Audi S8 is better looking than the new S550-Are they smoking crack?
Every once in a while I read an article written by some second rate freelance writer for a major publication and it really makes my blood boil.

Case in point, Forbes writer Michael Frank.

Check out this statement from his review of the new Mercedes-Benz S550:

"The new S isn’t the top looker--that award goes to the Audi S8. But this isn’t an unhandsome car, and besides the rather wide rear wheel arches, the S550 is stately and attractive. Give this to Mercedes: They know their franchise, and they don’t screw it up."

The Audi S8 better looking than the new S550?

Dude, are you on crack or are they just not paying you enough to have any taste?

That's like saying the previous generation Passat is better looking than the CLS550!

Don't get us wrong, we're not saying the Audi is an UGLY car.

But at best it is a glorified Phaeton.

Conservative, old fashioned, plain, boring are words that come to mind when we think of the S8.

It already looks dated and old against the 750 and new LS.

And next to the new S550 it looks twenty years old and extremely tired.

The S550 is fresh, aggressive, modern, strong, timeless, artistic, futuristic and clean.

It's a car you just can't help but notice when it drives by.

The S8 is rather forgettable in our opinion.

Granted, the new A8 is right around the corner and our Spies tell us the conservative moniker won't be an adjective to describe the next one.

So we'll give them the benefit of the doubt because we like Audi's product line.

But give the S its due..it's the most beautiful luxury sedan in the world.

And even better looking than its Maybach cousin.

No to the crack, I saw a new Audi S8 parked at an apartment complex in Newport Coast in OC today and it's a stunning lookin' car to say the least and I was at an Italian deli today when I saw a brand new silver Mercedes S550 with the AMG bumper, but this car had different fenders with foot long vertical vents at a slight forewrd angle and vents for the exhaust similar to the LS 460.

Anyone know if this S-Class was an AMG?

Yes, it is nice looking.

But not compared to the S.

And ESPECIALLY, when the AMG kit is on it.

p.s. Don't talk about Italian Deli's at 10:30PM PT! Makes me hungry! ;)

far from an audi fan but the s8 is nice looking the s550 is to "some models" but some models especially the non sport models just look overstyled, kinda like an old s class meets an rx8

-1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Well this is a rather stupid article.
Because i for one do think the S8 is prettier then the new S-Class.

Just because the A/S8 is an old model doesn't mean it can't be pretty.

And secondly, the A8 hasn't got anything to do with the Phaeton, they are two completely different cars.

And comparing a Passat to a CLS is also idiotic and totally unrelated.

It's like the same as saying the Ferrari F430 is prettier then the F355 just because it's 10 years younger.

I agree the Audi is by far the better looking. The Mercedes has those nasty Mitsubishi-Montero-esque wheel surrounds and big panel gaps especially around the trunk. The Audi just looks classic with a powerful stance.

Smoking crack? So whats wrong with me then? I think both the S8 & 760il are better looking than the S-Class!

The S-Class looks really good in darker colours but the moment you step into the grey & white shades, the car looses it's presence & beauty. The S-Class's bangle butt looks worse than the current 7's and almost as bad as the 745's rear end.

Crack is not the drug he is smoking, it is something else, only found in the depth of Afghanistan's mountain, what ever it is, it must be good..Because the S class DEMOLISHES the S8, on looks alone, I would be the S500, looks alone, meaning, there is only a gear, steering and a 5 seats, made of wood..Now if we include image (Audi has no image), the superior interior, excellent performance, and high tech gadgets..No comparision..

The Audi is clean, modern and futuristic at the same time.

The S-Class and S8 are both beautiful cars. I'd take either.

But because they are very similarly priced, for the money, I'd definitely take the more powerful, sexier, über-cool S8.

And 001, the A8's simple style is still very modern. The design never gets old. I was driving along the boulevard and there was an A8L idling in front of some mansion, and I just stared. Beautiful car.

Mercedes S-Class
-> taking cues from Nissan Altima
-> will look really old, really fast
-> well-heeled buyers will choose this car unfortunately due to brand
-> $10k-$20k more than the A8

Audi A8
-> single-frame grille is cool
-> appeal of all-wheel-drive
-> interior is fantastic

I'd still take a 7 series over these. The Phaeton is a great car too but I'd never shell out A8-type money for a Volkswagen.

The new S has presense but looks akward at times. The five spoke wheels on the S class are extremely lame. The S8 has presense and looks beautifully. It is also a seconds quicker than the S550 to 60, handles 20 sportier. One is a luxury cruiser and the other a very large sports car. I would take the S8 in performance and looks. The S65 exhaust pipes look like ones on a cheap compact; the way they just sorta hang out. And for the price of the S65 I would go with the Bentley Continental Fying Spur. So the S8 is over the S550 and the Bentley over the S65.

Hey Chewy, you can't compare specs between an S550 and an S8, you'd have to compare it with the A8. The S550 would blow away the A8. Second, your comparison with the Flying Spur is also not quite on par. The S65 would also blow it completely away, but you should probably compare it more to a Maybach (57S or 62S). To me that would be a more acurate comparison. My vote to Mercedes.

No, you don't know the facts, actually.

Audis that are based on VW platforms:

A3 (GTI / R32)

Q7 (Touareg- but stretched six inches)

TT (but it's 70% aluminum, which makes it very different from the GTI)

A4, A6, and A8, their core models, are on their own platforms. Jetta, Passat, Phaeton, Beetle and EOS are not related.

I don't agree about the refresh part (I think it looks nicer than the pre-refresh), but I completely agree about the new S-Class. It looks stunning now, but it'll look overdone and dated in eight years.

The A8/S8, however, will look good for quite some time. It's like a fine wine, in fact, and 001 can't appreciate true beauty. He's taking the fad (S-Class) and declaring it the best, simply because it's a fad.

First the Jetta is just a VW Golf with a boot.
Secondly the A4 has a Longitudally mounted engine, the Jetta and Passat do not.
Thirdly the B7 A4 was out in 2002, the current Golf/Jetta came out in 2003.

Face it, the Mercedes design team has lost their way, the S550 has styling cues from the Maybach (which looks terrible and sells even worse), the Nissan Altima (wheel arches / headlights) and the Bangled trunk of the 7-series (the worst part of a 7-series). The car looks decent if you get the sport package but without it, it's terrible looking.

The S8 I believe DOES look better than an S550. It has a more blocky stance a la 300C but it is very elegant. The S550 is well-designed as well, and it does turn heads, but really only the AMG models do justice to the car's shape.
The S8 grille is very nice, and the interior is better as well. In addition, you can hardly compare the two, the S8's shape has been around for almost three years.

Being an A8 owner, I feel compelled to put in my two cents.

The Audi A8 has a unique design oriented for a different consumer group than the Mercedes S550. Next time you see an S-class rolling down the street just remember that Benz has a reputation for being the cars of choice for Tasteless Millionaires or Overnight Millionaires.

Note: I am not saying the Mercedes S550 is a bad car. NOT AT ALL. I love this vehicle and I love driving my dad's 55 AMG. But I just personally prefer the Audi A8.

The optional Bang & Olefson sound system and its luxurious styling make the A8 a car that requires Taste and Elegance for someone to truly appreciate and love.

001: Please don't use low-class and degrading language to describe the A8. I understand and appreciate your point of view BUT:
Your words are hurtful to elegant Audi owners and your LACK OF INSIGHT on describing the equally gorgeous S550 just make you another uncultured fool. This article has disgraced BOTH VEHICLES>>> You simply have no authority or credibility to be talking about either.

I'd have to agree with this assessment. Mercedes are for people who are not true "money", they often are not as sophisticated, or educated as Audi owners, and have a need to desperately show their wealth.

Audi owners, being some of the wealthiest and most educated Americans (look at the buyer demographics) do not need this--they want a fine car that delivers, and the A8 is game.

For once I agree with Audiman4. I think the A8 is definitely a superior car to the S class. I live in California and almost all of the S classes I see would fit in nicely rolling down the street in Compton, and often do! If you are a top drug-dealing type, the Benz is just for you! If you like a vehicle with more class and timeless design, spring for the Audi.

I would take the Audi S8 over the Mercedes-Benz S550 in a second.

Not only does the S8 out-accelerate the Benz, but it out-handles it too.

The S8 rims look unbelievable and the car has a modern, clean-cut, tight body, something that can't be said for the Benz.

Even though the S8 costs as much as an S550 with sports package, it is the S8 that will catch the eye of people in part due to the fact that you don't see it every 5 feet like the Benz.

The S8 is far beyond the S550 in performance.

I'm an Audi driver but I admit the S550 looks better and is the only Mercedes with better front seats. However, the A8 has a rust-free aluminum body and includes a better AWD system with a Torsen center differential.
