Ford Delays Bidding Deadline for Jaguar and Land Rover, Yet Again.
Ford is keen to offload Jaguar and Land Rover from its Premier Auto Group but finding a buyer for the British carmakers is proving to be a difficult task. Officials originally set September 30 as the final date for all potential bids to come in but this was quickly extended by two weeks after it was revealed there was a downturn in the credit market. Now the deadline has slipped again, with the new date set for early next month.

Of concern to bidders, who are spending millions of dollars researching the financials of Jaguar and Land Rover, is the possibility that Ford may not even sell the labels, according to the Financial Times.

"Jaguar lost more than $700 last financial year"

I must admit that I am slightly suspicious of the effectiveness of the quality control measures undertaken for this article.

Jaguar cut its losses in half last year CD. those are old numbers. Also per unity profit is way up.

Jagexpert,

I wasn't talking about numbers, they are missing a word in there.

It is true that Jaguar lost more than $700, but that is not exactly an accurate depiction.

. . . . and the bids will get lower and lower and lower as the clock ticks.

Jagexpert2, clever accountants can shift profits or losses from one period to another. Half the losses are still losses and Ford cannot afford any more financial hemorrhaging. If there is no light at the end of the tunnel, it may be cheaper to just fold Jaguar and sell what's left of its assets. I hope that Jaguar's debt is segregated in a way that does not encumber the entire Ford enterprise.

Land Rover is doing pretty good they are not in a big decline as Jag. What Ford needs to do is build newer engines for the 2 brands. The LR3 need a redesign and so does the Range Rover who needs significant changes. Otherwise people wont see the need to go buy the newer version. All the newer engines have to be fuel efficient in every way! Have that device where it cuts off have of the cylinders to save fuel. Jag needs totally new engines for XK XF and XJ. The XJ needs a total overhaul that actually is a good competitor to the S-class, A8,7,and LS. Jaguar needs to get more models but not any crappy ones like the X. After they have done all of that they just need to advertise a lot to get the word out because when people think Luxury Car they mostly Think Mercedes BMW Audi Lexus. Of course we dont kno if Ford can afford to do all of this. They need to start getting more out of their huge R&D budget.

LR3 needs a redesign???
It came out like 2 years ago!!! It's perfectly competitive...
Engines need redesigns? Why? The current V8s are fine...and the LR2 has a Volvo 3.2 I6...

The XJ is actually a good car, just stuck in an old style body...and as for fuel efficiency, we get a 3.6 twin turbo V8 diesel in the RR and RRS in Europe, and that gets about 22 US combined...about 26 on the highway. Not great, but not terrible.

"The LR3 need a redesign and so does the Range Rover who needs significant changes."

The LR3 certainly does not need a redesign- but perhaps a refresh. They could take away some of the black plastic and give it a better grille, like the Range Rover.

As for the Range Rover... it's still so beautiful. The only changes I think it needs are the availability of diesels in the US and a quality control fix. I've heard too many horror stories about these cars breaking down (REAL reviews, not just AutoSpies people saying their friend's uncle traded it in for an LX470). It has kept me from ever considering a Range Rover HSE for my wife.

BTW, the next-gen Land Rovers will be all-aluminum, or at least the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. This will dramatically decrease weight (which is necessary) and increase fuel economy.

The XJ IS a great competitor to the S/A8/LS/7. I'd actually rather have an XJR than a 750i. It drives very well and looks amazing.

They are advertising a TON already. Didn't you notice all of the XK/XKR ads when it came out? And now I'm seeing refreshed XJ ads in every magazine.

I think that Ford is more marketing the brand to build interest in the brands and keep them on peoples minds as they start to roll out new cars. Ford has invested and lost too much money to sell them as the tides are turning. Why sell when you have a home run with the new XF coming in the next year.
I do think that they need new engines though. They need a modern V8 with a supercharger on the R Models, basically a dispalcement and horsepower bump. They could use the same engines in both brands. They should also consolidate the dealerships. In CHicago there is one dealer that has Jaguar, Range Rover and Volvo. Its a good mix of Fords luxury brands. I think it would be a good idea nationwide.

I am not entirely sure what the matter is with Ford, but I think that there are things going on within Jaguar that are not being fully disclosed.

I have heard a little rumor that there are emplyees at Jaguar who are working on a project that is not of their current line up and is to come as a complete surprise.

I have my suspisions but shall wait a bit before expressing them.

Well Just so you all know I saw the XF in the flesh tonight. It has so many cool elements that you can't see in the photos. There is a carved out portion of the rear tailights sort of a ridge that follows the line that runs into the line of the rear bumber interface with the car. Its really cool. The headlamps that look flat and lifeless in the photos actually has a curved lens that feeds into the curve on the hood that arches over the lens. Really cool. The grille is much more complex in 3D. It is much more dramatic, and has greater depth than in the pics. Simply put its a wow. There were 400 people there and universal praise. And believe me I asked everyone. Maybe it was my insecurity from all of the naysayers bugt I am so proud of this car and gotta say, holy crap! What a delightful car.

Ford should hold on to these assets. Now these brands are finally starting to look good.
