Ford Fusion built better than the Camry/Accord...
Ford Fusion was ranked number one in the JD Power APEAL study for 2006.

In November of 2006, Consumer Reports ranked the Fusion ahead of its rivals, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in overall quality rating (as reported from surveys filled out by Consumer Reports' suscribers).

Recently there have been some Toyota recalls as well. But saying that there are too many Ford products that are not built as well as Toyota products.Especially when it comes to trucks. Also there have and continue to be reports of engine fires in some of the Ford trucks. I'm glad that the Fusion has gotten a good write up. Ford needs some positive strokes right now.

Thats exaclty the problem American manufacturers are facing. Even if they build high quality class leading products they still won't be able to take market share back from the Japanese.

Its all about the perception of the consmuer. Its going to take years of heavy PR and advertising to win back the customers.

A solid effort from Ford with the Fusion. But alas, they are about 6 years too late. Plus when placed next to the Camry, Altima and Sonata, it looks ghastly.

I'm glad Ford and their Fusion have supporters. They need them...

...but don't confuse the appeal study with build quality. It's an emotional appeal study. It's good that Ford won in their category, but this study tends to be a report on the newest cars. This is the most flawed study in the JD Power line-up, IMO.

In JD Power Initial Quality Study, the Fusion didn't show up on the top 3, this was dominated by the usual suspects.

The Fusion failed crash tests miserably, which to me is an element of build quality.

CR rated the Accord Hybrid, Prius and the Accord 4 cylinder as more reliable than the Fusion. Still, they did beat out the Camry and Accord 6 cylinder (albeit only slightly), so kudos to them... but the headline and commentary are a little misguided and misleading.

Ignoring the mediocre products that the Big 3 are currently producing only adds fuel to the fire.

because there weren't any other competeting manufacturers...???
then people invented emissions regs and fuel economy, and BANG went caddy, lincoln and V8s, then german cars became amazing, the japanese cars became reliable and well engineered - BANG chevvy, dodge and ford, and it's been downhill ever since.
oh and of course the ford pinto went bang by itself.

for 30 years american cars have been getting worse, while everyone else's got better, I think it's time american stuff improved.

I too am glad that Ford has got a winner with the Fusion, but this utterly BS from a Ford flaming boy, “lightningSVT”. The facts will always be facts and the truth will set you free. The Fusion is a nice alternative but it’s bland next to the competitors. Don’t get started about where Ford got the styling cues for the Fusion. If you don’t know then you’re blind like most extreme fan by brand. What Ford and GM got going for them is that they are American company and patriotism, if you want to call it that. I too want the domestics to do well because it’s good for the economy, but competition bring the best out of any product. If not for the Japanese, we would probably still driving cars and trucks that are badly engineered.

Is that the reason why Ford should be complacent? This shouldn’t be a question but a fact…it’s no wonder why there are so much turmoil at Ford. I hope you’re not the new thinker at Ford.

The other person you should also mention is E. Deming, a great American. Without him Japan will not be known for their reputable quality, but isn’t it ironic when you talk about quality Toyota and Honda come to mind.

Its' not surprising that the Fusion won this award. But, Consumer Reports' subscribers is a very limited population of people to extrapolate truly reliable results, don't you think?
And the demographic profile of someone who would subscribe to CR makes me skeptical as well.
The only person I ever knew who subscribed to Consumer REports is someone who once called the sixth generation Buick Skylark an "awesome, nice car".

No, the engines are both Mazda and Ford. Here is the thing, the 4 cylinder is a Mazda designed engine even though it says that it is a Zetec engine it isn't. It is actually the Mazda Z engine. The V6 is the Ford engine, the Duratec of course. On both cars the engines are the same (except the 2.3l DSI turbo)

We all know that the Japanese was able to take advantage of the domestics while they were asleep at the wheel. But FACT stands, the domestics can and has proven they can build a very competitive product, but it will take a number of years before they are in a postion to win back the hearts of the average American. America's want not only a winning car company to boost about, but the product to prove so. I'm very glad Ford has made the Fusion and if they are smart, they will continue with the advancement of product and go beyond what others can do. But competitive never stands still.

Good going Ford.

You can be both. I woud whole-heartedly say I am also a VW fan, though not nearly to the extent that I am an Audi fan. VW has made some very stupid mistakes, and Audi's products are clearly better cars, but the basic ones (Jetta/Rabbit, Passat, GTI/GLI, Touareg) are all very good.

I am also a BMW fan, a Mercedes fan, a Porsche fan, a Jaguar (XJ/XK/XF) fan, a Lexus (IS/LX/RX/LS) fan, an Infiniti (M/FX/G coupe) fan...

Good for Ford. The problem is that Ford, like GM, needs to do this consistantly, with no problems and no recalls for say the next decade. This requires a long term committment and of course downsizing of a huge dinosaur. The other problem that Ford has is standing behind its product. I am not feeling very good about a company that has the attitude that if something goes wrong with my purchase, that I am on my own. I know this from 2 new car purchases from Ford in the last 7 years. I will not buy another vehicle from them again. I might a decade from now if they can change their attitude and make a consistantly high quality product. Good luck Ford!

The difference between Ford and Toyota are: Toyota always voluntarily recalls their vehicles. Ford, who has more recalls than any other automaker, has to be forced to recall theirs. Don't believe me..check out the government site...ODI (office of Defects Investigations)...see who has more complaints...and again all of Toyotas recalls were voluntary..thats the key....On the ODI site, that's where consumers complain and then it's investigated and they try to get the automaker to do recalls for serious problems. Trust me I am not biased at all. I don't own a toyota...don't really care for their products...I do like Lexus and I like Ford F-150s...I think the Ford products besides the f 150's are all UGLY.

This is to me is active recall and automotive companies that practice it should be commend for it. Yeah it might look bad initially for them but it’s good for the consumers.

I owned an F-150 and then I noticed the transmission was slipping, brought it to the dealer and they told me that’s how it shifts. I sold it and got a Tundra and so far no issue. I have driven cars from different makes because life is too short to be faithful to one…beside my wife. Of all the cars that I have owned, based on my experience, Toyota/Lexus has been the most reliable.

Lexuskindaguy12, are you light-headed?

Lexus IS Toyota. They have the same reliability ratings, the same satisfaction ratings, the same owners, what are quite obviously the same designers...

Toyota has always been pretty good, and so has Lexus, in terms of reliability. I feel that Honda/Acura are even more reliable, though.

I would say with confidence that the re-badged Opel/Saturn Aura is a better car than the Fusion. I'm sorry for your mistaken thought that you got a great deal.

Surprisingly, I agree about the Range Rover. It's beautiful. Not my ultimate dream car, but if my wife had to have one SUV that I could drive to work some days, it would be the Range Rover. We aren't getting it, not because it's too expensive (it isn't), but because it's so unreliable and so thirsty. She wants a good reliability experience and also wants to be lighter on gas.

The Fusion/Milan/MKZ is a good product for Ford and appears to be doing well. Fords problem right now is there are not enough well styled good looking vehicles in their inventory. The Ford 500 AKA Taurus resurected is a very dull looking car.In addition there is still too much reliance on the truck division. Also reliability is not consistent enough throughout Fords product line. Their truck products have had issues with engine fires. Ford is still too reactive rather then proactive in design.Just look at the restyled old Escort. What a joke! I hope that Mullaly can force Ford to react more quickly to changing market conditions in terms of product. That's the only way they will dig themselves out of this mess.

Having spent some time in a Fusion recently, I personally know I would choose it over a Camry any day. The Fusion was a beautifully assembled, tight, responsive, attractive vehicle. Another big advantage is that is doesn't have that horrid stench of Japanese plastics and adhesives out-gassing throughout the life of the car. (Maybe it's just me, but I can sit blindfolded in a new car and tell you if it is Japanese or not, simply by the unpleasant chemical smell that is unique to them - even the ones built in the US.)

But back to the Fusion. I find it vastly nicer looking that the Camry - cleaner, tighter, edgier in appearance. The interior beats the Camry, too. Although I've not driven a Camry, they are routinely rated as being quick but flabby performers. The Fusion was practically a sports sedan with fast reflexes and ample power.

Ford has a winner here.

I actually had a Fusion for a rental car. I don't care what people say about how it's a better build but the one i was given was horrible:

1)The window sill rubber pieces was not even lined up with the rear door one.
2)The road noise was loud that I had to raise my voice to speak to the passenger.

I mean the exterior doesn't look that bad for a Ford make but the road noise and the small parts and finishings that should be required in order to sell a car was not inspected during production. Mind you the rental was brand new and probably driven a couple times at couple hundred kilometers. The rental company even notified me about the flaws of the car. On a positive note it wasn't that bad in power distribution. It had a little kick to it. Not like it matters after the negatives have made the decision for you about this car.
