Ford Transit Connect Family One Concept revealed ahead of New York Auto Show

One week prior to its unveiling at the New York Auto Show, Ford is taking the wraps off around its Transit Connect Family One.

The vehicle, which is smaller than a classic minivan and therefore less expensive and more efficient, brings with it more space than standard hatch or wagon.

The pricing for the vehicle, which begins at $21,475, is targeted at commercial applications and will hit US markets early in 2010. This will make the up-featured Family One still priced way below $30,000. The Family One, which is a five-seater and equipped with 135 cu-ft of cargo space, comes with a fuel consumption rating of 22mpg city and 25mpg highway driving. The design of the vehicle is focused on both kids and parents and will be both engaging and entertaining no matter whether it is parked or mobile.

If Ford is going to sell the Transit as a family van then they need to restyle the grille to make it not look like it's a flower delivery truck.

This is not Europe's minivan. In fact, some around here would do well to see exactly what minivan offerings there are from Ford as well as other manufacturers marketing vans in Europe. While many families do buy these types in Europe (along with similar vehicles from FIAT, Peugeot, Citroen, Renault etc) it wouldn't necessarily appeal to American buyers in that role. This vehicle is being aimed at a more utilitarian market in the US. Somewhat of a pickup with a full roof. Small businesses that have deliveries to make, and perhaps you may even see them being clad with taxi cab liveries for urban transport duties. There is a market for businesses that want a smaller utility vehicle than is currently being offered. The type of business that bought cargo versions of the Sienna and the Astro.
