Ford planning 340-hp Fusion GT to take on Audi S4
According to MotorTrend, Ford’s SVT division is planning a Ford Fusion GT for late 2009 targeting the car as an affordable Audi S4. Following the Lincoln MKS, MKR and Ford Flex, the Ford Fusion GT will be the fourth model to get an EcoBoost direct-injection turbo engine.
Power will come from a 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 that produces 340-hp. The Fusion GT will come with a Hadlex all-wheel-drive architecture to handle the high torque. The current 160-hp entry level engine is expected to be replaced by Ford’s new 2.5L 4-cylinder unit that produces 170-hp.
The 2009 Lincoln MKS will get the turbo engine next year which will be mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Other models to get EcoBoost will be a 4-cylinder Fusion in 2010, a limited-production...

This should be an interesting offshoot, which will hopefully for Ford bring in a few other sales to the Fusion name.

Hey! Where were you hiding and crying when the "BMW sales down 17%" article came out, you pitifully ignorant cherry-picking tool?
FWD sucks! FWD sucks! Tell us then, what other safety-enhancing automotive breakthroughs, that have been adopted by the vast majority of auto makers and best serve the needs of most drivers, also suck? Airbags? Anti-lock brakes? Those suck too? I tell ya, they can sure come in handy when an out-of-control 3 series comes sailing at your "FWD POS" in a light snow storm.
Are you so thick that you don't understand that MOST (meaning "the overwhelming majority of") people don't have the same things in common as you when it comes to buying a car? For example:
1) they aren't douchbags
2) the trivial increase in handling prowess is not worth the negatives associated with RWD, especially where bad weather driving is a concern. Skid pad performance isn't important when trying not to go hurtling into oncoming traffic or climb a 3% grade in the snow.
I wonder if it's possible to be so stupid it results in a permanent, completely addictive, drug-like high. I can't think of another explanation for the worthless word-puke you regurgitate all over this site. My dog used to do that when he got overstimulated; barf a little. And most people would still rather still see his half-digested kibble than your undigestable comments. Plus he used to eat the neighbors' cat's crap. Coincidence...?

Not trying to stir the pot here, but my BMW 323i with traction control was actually better in snow and ice than my Ford Contour SE which was front wheel drive. They both wore summer tires, however the Contour was HORRIBLE in snow whereas the BMW wasn't bad at all. The Audi A4 Quattro I had at the time was the best, but since my wife drove that I was always in the BMW.
I assure you, the traction control systems in BMW's and MB's have done wonders in handling winter conditions.

No worries. I've driven BMWs in bad weather on numerous occasions, and they aren't that bad with proper tires and, maybe most importantly, a competent driver behind the wheel. I agree that there are FWD cars that are outperformed by RWD cars in the snow. However, that's definitely the exception rather than the rule.
I love BMW. The cars are great and I'm not bashing at all. I'd be happy to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both drive configurations. But that's not necessarily the point I'm trying to make. The only point I'm trying to make here is that amazinbimmer is a total toolbox.

How exactly do you guys come up with these titles?! You just reach into the goody bag and yank out a random car to put in the header with the actual news?! Since when have the Ford Fusion and the Audi A4/S4 been competitors?! That is like saying that the Mercedes is going up against LAmborghini with the MB S65AMG because they have similar power numbers!

Try writing full sentences!!! You seem smarter if you do!
anyway, the article says LOWCOST ALTERNATIVE, not a competitor. Big difference. this headline, however, makes it seem that they are in fact targeting the S4... which is in no way true!!!

Thats cool. Finally a good idea. And Sailor, the Fusion will never be a full on competitor, but a lower priced alternative like American Cars have always been (Corvette/Porsche 911, CTS-V/M5 etc)

Well... It is still a stupid headline... They should have mentioned a competitor, not a random similarly sized car!

I almost threw up reading the title..no matter what ford does, its will still be ugly (where is the european Mondeo?!, why not bring to states?) I hope atleast they were considering 4-wheel drive, fwd will be a joke. All the best ford!!

Since you didn't read the article a Haldex AWD system (VW R system, SAAB XWD) is planning on being used. Also the next Fusion (not the upcoming refresh) will be a rebadged Mondeo but assembled in the US.

This would probably be the most exciting Ford sedan to date then. With the Fusion's contemporary look and some extra umph under the hood it should be a car aimed at the younger buyers. Hell my 19 year old brother's leasing a 4-banger and it does awesome in fuel consumption, perfect for him since he's communiting to school & work. But this new Fusion GT isn't targeted for school boys. It's for those loyal Ford buyers who want some power to punch around.

Ford will not last long enough to make a true competitor to Suzuki, much less the S4. Bankrupcy will take care of it.
